  1. What is the Nadir of the Simpsons?

If I remember correctly he didn't even actually die. I think he reappeared later, having been out of the country the entire time. Bleeding Gums dying bummed me out though.
  2. Spelunky!

Oh. Oops. Well what I said is still true.
  3. Spelunky!

I use OBS too. I can make the recording with no trouble. The only editing I was considering was to cut out everything but the deaths (or beating the game, something I haven't had too much luck with lately).
  4. Spelunky!

If I had any video editing abilities (or software) I'd consider recording for a week then putting together a supercut of the last few seconds of each run.
  5. Spelunky!

It is possible, though extremely rare, for a block to be there and the shop to be completely inaccessible. I've had it happen to me a couple times. Getting in without triggering the shopkeeper is tricky. On an unrelated note, I've been considering recording my daily runs again. Don't know if there's still any interest in that kind of thing though.
  6. Our favourite moments of play

Freespace 2 is full of stuff like that for me, which is probably why I love it so much even though I don't care for flight sim games. On missions that require you to patrol, I'd actually patrol despite knowing where and when the enemies were going to come from. I'd equip my wingmen with what I considered to be tactically appropriate weapons even though I knew it wouldn't matter. It also contains one of my favorite gaming memories. At the beginning of a particular mission, the moment you come out of the subspace jump you see a HUGE capital ship coming straight at you. The wing leader yells out "DIVE DIVE DIVE HIT YOUR BURNERS PILOT" as you see your squad frantically try to avoid becoming bugs on a windshield. Nearly fell out of my chair the first time I played it and in fact got turned into space roadkill because I didn't react in time. It was such an unexpectedly amazing moment that still stands out to me after all these years.
  7. Other podcasts

Man that sounds pretty awesome. I suppose I was technically in my high school's gifted class. For us it just meant talking a lot of AP courses. I actually wish we had something more like what you describe because my classes were all about preparing us to take the AP exam at the end of the year, which is probably the worst way to actually teach anything. Not that I didn't learn anything but I felt pretty unprepared when I entered college. The way I described it was in high school I was a big fish in a little pond. In college I was still a big fish, but in an ocean of sharks.
  8. Steam Curation!

I never used Steam as a method of discovering new games. To me that seemed like walking into a Gamestop with no intention of buying anything and just looking around to see what's on the shelves in the hopes that something will strike your fancy. At best, the Steam store page just served as a reminder to me that the game I was considering getting is out now. If I'm going to the Steam store, I'm going there with a specific intention and not random browsing. I don't know if curated lists will change any of that but I have a feeling they won't. I'd still rather hear about things from the podcast or the forums than see an item pop up on a list. That's just me though. Also the way the front page looks now it feels like a cheap website where the content is entirely ads. Which I guess it is now that I think about it.
  9. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

The impression I've gotten from opinions (not my own, I haven't played it) on Hyrule Warriors is that if you can handle Dynasty Warriors gameplay and like Zelda lore/characters/settings then Hyrule Warriors is the game for you. Which I guess is exactly what they were going for.
  10. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

I personally prefer mouse+keyboard but I learned long ago this is not a universal thing. For some people, using the mouse and keyboard is less intuitive because you're doing separate things with your hands. I've talked with friends who think the keyboard is too busy and complicated. They preferred a controller because they feel that everything is in one place and its easier to mentally map the controls to the buttons. It was easier to understand controlling movement (an inherently analog action) with an analog stick than with WASD. It also depends a lot on the game. Some games are clearly made with a controller in mind (Halo for instance plays much better with a controller than a keyboard). All my evidence is anecdotal but the general idea seemed to be that movement and general actions were easier with a controller while looking and precise actions were easier with a mouse. I always think of it as a crouch-jump.
  11. Idle Thumbs 177: The Good Ones

I'm with Jake. The end of 2 is one of my favorite scenes ever. Its an obvious setup for the third movie but that scene where Marty says "There's only one man who can help me" then instant cut to Doc at the courthouse. It destroys me every time.
  12. Feminism

Oh yeah, that's what I like about the design. It totally fits into her character and story in a much more organic way than a skintight, formfitting spandex outfit. Its just that the engineer in me can't help but analyze things in this manner. I still think capes are silly.
  13. Feminism

I think capes are entirely pointless, especially if its going to come off so easily. The zippers can get caught on stuff and possibly make noise, the belt being lopsided could maybe be a problem but probably not a big one if she's used to it. The problem I have with the boots is that the Bat family are supposed to be stealthy which big combat boots don't strike me as. Its fine for soldiers in a desert or whatever but for sneaking up on dudes it seems like there could be better choices. But again those are dumb complaints that mean nothing in the world of comics and even with those in mind I still like it.
  14. Feminism

I have nitpicky concerns with some of the "practicality" of the new design (such as a cape that snaps off, hanging zippers, a belt that's not centered, and laced boots) but those complaints would be true of basically any superhero costume. But I totally agree that its a much better design overall and certainly way more practical than the old one.

You can send just the code. That's what I've been doing. All they have to do is enter it at ello.co/join
  16. Idle Thumbs 177: The Good Ones

We sort of got the self lacing shoes from the movie. ... except for the self lacing part. As cool as a hoverboard would be, I'd actually like that self adjusting, auto drying jacket.
  17. Ello.co

Frankly I have no idea what I'm doing with it. I'm still trying to figure out the UI.
  18. Ello.co

The problem with Twitter is the reporting system is terrible and they hardly ever do anything useful to help or protect people who are actually threatened. One could argue that its restrictive of free speech and in a way you'd be right. But at the same time not doing anything to prevent people from making rape threats or exposing private information isn't helpful to your user base either. Twitter and Ello are free to be as restrictive or non-restrictive as they want because in the end its their service in the same way that the Thumbs have the right to ban people on these forums who come here only to make harassing posts. I guess the hope is that Ello will have a better system for moderation than Twitter because Twitter basically doesn't have one. Whether that's better or not is up to you.
  19. Ello.co

Sent one to kickinthehead. Still got a ton of invites left.
  20. Idle Thumbs 177: The Good Ones

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong I LOVE the Back to the Future trilogy. I'm not bothered by the complications, its just something I can't help thinking about after seeing all the movies a thousand times.
  21. Idle Thumbs 177: The Good Ones

My favorite line about trying to explain time travel comes from the Gargoyles cartoon. In one episode, Goliath and Xanatos end up in the past and before they return to the present, Goliath tells Xanatos that he would leave him there if he didn't fear the damage Xanatos would do to the timestream. Xanatos' reply is "But you won't. Because you didn't. Time travel's funny that way."
  22. Idle Thumbs 177: The Good Ones

I forget if I read it somewhere or if it was in the commentary for the movie, but I recall that the opening scene of the movie where Marty plays his guitar using the giant amp was created to provide an explanation for why they're friends, the idea being that Marty wanted to hang out with Doc so he could use the giant amp but they ended up becoming BFFs.
  23. Twitter :)

For people with Android phones: what Twitter client do you use? I've been using Twicca since TweetDeck went away but lately Twicca hasn't been doing very well. I can't open gifs in the app and right now I'm having trouble even sending tweets. I'd rather not use the official Twitter app because I don't want to get all the extra tweets or recommends or whatever other stuff they're going to throw at me. Can anyone recommend a better one?
  24. Idle Thumbs 177: The Good Ones

Well since you asked (I'll spoiler it since Chris hasn't seen the movies)
  25. Idle Thumbs 177: The Good Ones

Its definitely not implied that Marty has a claim to writing the song, but the idea behind saying that he "invented" rock and roll is that he inspired the creation of the song and subsequent genre. Then again he was inspired by Chuck Berry, who was inspired by Marty, who was inspired by Chuck Berry, who was inspired by Marty... Of course it all breaks down when you think about it too much. There's a different time travel issue I have a bigger problem with but I won't go into it. Also for no reason I can sort of legitimately use this
