  1. Idle Thumbs 178: CS Losers

I haven't played TF2 in a while, but during my last period of play I spent most of my time playing the co-op MvM mode. I'd occasionally join a payload or capture point server, but I've never played arena before. It seemed counter to what I like about TF2.
  2. Idle Thumbs 178: CS Losers

Just in case you're interested, I'm going to repeat myself again
  3. Idle Thumbs 178: CS Losers

Its not entirely true. The famous phrase "Elementary my dear Watson" is never said in the books. Although he has periodically said "elementary" and "my dear Watson" they never appear together. He was a known drug user but probably not an addict. This excerpt is from the opening chapter of The Sign of the Four Holmes was known to play the violin in the books, although it doesn't come up a whole lot. This excerpt is from A Study In Scarlet where Watson talks about Holmes' abilities and knowledge While Holmes was known to smoke, the calabash pipe often associated with him is not from the books. Neither is the deerstalker cap.

  6. Life

I doubt PAX would even let you in with any kind of spring loaded thing. I once had an idea for a Full Metal Alchemist cosplay that involved a fake arm with a spring loaded blade that I could unleash by clapping my hands together, but I realized I'd never make it into a convention.
  7. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

I quite liked the combat in Arkham. I'm a fan of simplified design over complicated. I like complex stuff too but I don't like it when that complexity is unnecessary. The combat in Arkham felt good to me because it mostly let me do what I wanted without needing to remember a complex sequence of inputs. Mordor seems like its that way too. Quick question for the people playing on PC. I assume it has full controller support? I can't really picture not using a controller to play it but all the video I've seen has been of the console releases.
  8. Spelunky!

That sounds pretty awesome, reminds me of the Souls games.
  9. Playing Through Mario 64 1st Time, Difficult or Just Me?

I definitely got every star. Multiple times. That was actually one of my favorite parts of the game, how each star was like a little puzzle and all you had was a vague hint on where it was and what to do. I'll admit that some of them were kind of tedious (such as the 100 coin stars) but it was a minor problem to me.
  10. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

I've heard some stories that make the system seem really interesting. Like how if one particular character keeps getting away, it can actually create a strong drive to find him. Or if another keeps killing you, it motivates you to seek vengeance. Not to mention the potential for power plays and espionage. I can easily see this becoming a popular feature in other games.
  11. Idle Thumbs 178: CS Losers

Danielle correctly called out the Star Trek episode Darmok and my email about Farscape got read. Nerd me is so happy right now. And I can't wait to hear what Danielle thinks about the Peacekeeper Wars.
  12. Idle Thumbs 178: CS Losers

Those are actually the reasons I haven't played it and don't think I'd be into it. I like the sort of organized chaos of games like TF2. I like being able to just respawn and jump right back into the middle of that mess. I think having only one life per round would make me extremely timid, even if those rounds are short and fast paced. I don't think that either way is better or worse, its just whatever you prefer.
  13. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

(I would have photoshopped some orcs in if I had any talent for that)
  14. Ello.co

Right now Ello doesn't represent the next big thing, nor does it represent "Twitter done right". What Ello is and will become is still very unclear, much like Twitter was in its early days. The current appeal of Ello is that they are trying something, anything. It might be good, it might be terrible. But the fact that so many people are seriously considering switching Twitter for something like Ello is fairly telling about how Twitter handles (or in this case doesn't handle) its user base. I personally don't see Ello being significantly better than Twitter in a meaningful way but its too early to say for sure.
  15. Playing Through Mario 64 1st Time, Difficult or Just Me?

Boy, you guys are seriously making me question my own memory. I really don't remember finding the game hard at all but maybe I've somehow repressed it. I'd love to be able to play it again to see if my memories hold true but I feel like I'd have to do it with an N64 controller to get an accurate test.
  16. Idle Thumbs 178: CS Losers

Yeah, Danielle streams with Patricia on her channel. If you follow them on Twitter they announce when and what they'll be doing. I haven't been able to watch any of them live because they usually start too late for me.
  17. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

This game has really surprised me. It was not at all a title I was looking forward to but now that I've seen some footage of it, I have to say I'm really intrigued. I can't really afford it right now, hopefully it'll pop up in the Steam holiday sale and I can get it then. The PS3 and 360 versions will have a reduced form of the Nemesis system, whatever that means. I've been using this site/utility to check for stuff like that. It won't tell you exactly what kind of performance you'll get but its a quick and easy way to see if you meet the min/recommended requirements.
  18. Idle Thumbs 178: CS Losers

I'm one of those people who's played a lot of shooters but never played a CS game. It just doesn't look like something I'd be into. I still like TF2 though. Jake, if you ever want to play TF2 and Sean isn't up for it, I'll totally play with you. I think a fight between Danielle and Uwe Boll would be an amazing sight.
  19. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

I've heard (and seen) that the framerate and resolution take a pretty big hit when you add a second player. Something to keep in mind if that matters to you.
  20. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Let me first preface this by saying I didn't read the article yet and know pretty much nothing about TB. My problem with this is that this is also the position of a lot of gaters. They don't want to have their games invaded by political statements or social issues, not realizing they already have been. They refuse to acknowledge that issues like sexism are pervasive and have been that way for decades. Ignoring a problem doesn't mean its not there nor does it make that problem disappear. If TB doesn't want to talk about it himself then fine he doesn't have to. But he should know that there are people out there who also share this view and which side they're on.
  21. Unnecessary Comical Picture Thread

I like that it was established 13 years before Christopher Walken was born.
  22. Playing Through Mario 64 1st Time, Difficult or Just Me?

I was always very proactive about controlling the camera so I hardly ever found it in a position I didn't put it in. That might be more effort than other people care to put in but I like having that control.
  23. Our favourite moments of play

Talking about Mario 64 in a different thread reminded me of another amusing Mario moment. In college one of my friends' parents sent her old SNES and copy of Super Mario World. She's not really a gamer but she said she spent a lot of time playing the game as a kid and proclaimed herself to be an expert in the game. I then spent the next few hours blowing her mind as I showed her things she never even knew existed, such as the star road, entirely from my own memory.
  24. Playing Through Mario 64 1st Time, Difficult or Just Me?

I thought the camera and controls were great. I had no problems quickly jumping around between camera angles to get a better view and land a jump exactly where I wanted. I got to the point where I'd try to finish as much of a world as I could with the camera locked at the start and then locked into a new position once I could no longer see myself. I actually have more trouble in the recent games for some reason. I keep doing dumb things over and over in 3D Land and 3D World, stuff I never would have done in Mario 64. Something about Mario 64 really clicked for me and hasn't quite been the same since. I don't know if that would still hold true if I went back and revisited the game today though.
  25. Nintendo 3DS

I like Smash in general. I like the way it has such a simple control scheme (button + direction = attack) that hides a complex series of strategies if you want to get into it but you can totally ignore it without losing much. Its fun chaos. However that 3DS demo felt terrible to me. The funnest part of Smash to me is the crazy battles but on the small 3DS screen its too hard to tell what's going on. I'm usually pretty good at being aware of many things on screen and not losing myself when there's a lot happening but it felt really uncomfortable on the 3DS. I also didn't care for the way it controlled. It felt like Smash but not at the same time. Its hard to describe. The whole thing felt like a weird clone to me where you knew it was the same but everything was just a little bit off.
