I bought my first DS during college. It was at a Black Friday sale. I went to Best Buy at 4 AM and stood outside in the cold for 2 hours, but I got my hands on one of these I also will also guiltily admit that I picked up an R4 while in China and may have played some things I wasn't supposed to.

It's not entirely your fault. Advertising and the Internet at large have done a great job of obfuscating what the difference between them is.

Counting that high in Chinese is actually kind of tricky. Instead of a new word every power of 1000, it's powers of 10,000. What I mean by that is there's a word that means "ten-thousand". So 100,000 is "ten ten-thousand"; 1,000,000 is "one hundred ten-thousand"; 10,000,000 is "one thousand ten-thousand"; 100,000,000 is a new word; etc. It takes me a second to figure out how to say large numbers in Chinese because I have to do some math in addition to the translating.

In an almost unprecedented scenario where I work, I have the option to work this weekend and actually get paid overtime. Which is good because I could REALLY use the money.

I hate measuring things in inches. 12 in. = 1 ft. What a fucking dumb system.

"Feminist hacker Barbie doesn't need your goddamned help, Steven and Brian" may be my favorite article headline in a long while.

They call it Cyber Monday but really the online deals will be running the whole weekend. Some have already started.

Monument Valley. Short but sweet. I wish it went further though. I don't necessarily mean that its too short (although it kind of is), I mean I wish the ideas were explored more. Sounds like the DLC does that. I'm interested to try it at some point.

Idle Thumbs 185: Beppo's Hole

I just finished Monument Valley (not the DLC) and I completely agree with the Thumbs assessment. You can see the beginnings of some really interesting stuff at the end but they don't quite take it far enough. I'll have to try out the DLC at some point because it sounds like what I want. Also I'm glad totem guy returns. -
I hit 100 for the 4th time last night. Probably going to start progressing toward the fifth tonight, but I also maxed all the perk decks and am probably going to mess around with those a bit first. I did a quick respect toward a dodge heavy loadout with akimbo pistols which is proving surprisingly fun and effective.

The Amazon app store has a free app a day promotional tool. The program is opt-in, so developers have to choose to do it rather than being forced to make their app free. The main benefit is getting a spot on the front page and a bump in sales numbers, even though its available for free. I'm not sure what determines when (or even if) an app will be chosen for the program though. Even if Monument Valley was submitted because of criticism over the price of the expansion I doubt Amazon would push it up to the front of the queue because of it. I have a habit of checking the app store each morning to see what the new app is which is why I noticed Monument Valley in the first place. A lot of the time the free app is garbage but occasionally you'll get something good.
-
It looks like being a free app of the day is an opt-in thing, so if an app shows up there it's because the dev purposely choose to make it eligible for the program. That makes me feel better about using it since it seems to be a choice left to the developers and not forced upon them by Amazon.

Idle Thumbs 185: Beppo's Hole
SecretAsianMan replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Oh, and speaking of the price of Monument Valley, the base game is free today on Amazon (for Android). -
Yeah I wonder about things like that too. I had the same thoughts when I subscribed to Gamefly. I have to imagine that since it's through Amazon and not some illegal thing that there's some kind of compensation.

I've asked her that exact question before several times. And I somehow still don't know that answer. -

Alternatively you can be like me and ask Teg a thousand dumb questions on Steam even though I don't play Pokémon. I find almost everything about Pokémon interesting except the part where I play it. -
Yeah viruses and stuff are the modern versions. I suppose cremation would be a defense against the Romero type zombies who rise from the grave. The modern fast zombie would also likely be able to defeat the treadmill defense.
-
Repeating from the deals thread: Monument Valley is free today from Amazon if anyone is interested.
-
I think a good argument for cremation is the prevention of zombies.

I keep forgetting it exists. Then I get an email about some new feature or a t-shirt or something, remember it exists for about 2 seconds, then promptly forget again.

Tea eggs are normally made by hard boiling the egg, then cracking the shell and boiling them again in a seasoned sauce. For the red cooked pork you can do the same thing. Really you want to cook the eggs at the same time you add the other ingredients to the meat. They should turn a brown color when finished. I usually do it without the shell on though.
-
I do a similar thing, except I use pork shoulder and boil it directly in the soy sauce first, then add everything else after. I also put in garlic, some ginger, green onions, a little cooking wine (preferably Chinese cooking wine but sherry works in a pinch), and the star anise. The anise and ginger I put in a spice bag so I don't accidentally bite into them later. Another thing that's good to put in are some peeled hard boiled eggs. They come out similar to tea eggs and are delicious.

Glad I could help! I complain a lot about "American Chinese" food but it's mostly in jest. While not "authentic", it's still good and I occasionally make homemade versions of it (like this one for sesame chicken). Katsudon is great although I haven't tried making it myself. I probably should one of these days, I already have the dashi.

I pretty much only know how to cook meats, mostly pork. A lot of what I make is stuff my mom made for me growing up. Probably my favorite thing to do is called Red Cooked Pork (an almost literal translation of the Chinese name). You can find several recipes if you search for that. Despite being an engineer by trade, when it comes to cooking I don't usually do precise measurements and go by feel so I can't provide a reliable recipe myself. I can tell you what ingredients I use and the steps to cook it but the proportions are largely subjective. If you're not averse to deep frying, I also like to make Tonkatsu (which is a Japanese dish of deep fried pork cutlets). There are other things I can think of but they're not quick/simple and often require harder to get ingredients.
