Idle Thumbs 189: Serious Ma'am
SecretAsianMan replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Chris made a comment about playing Talos with Sarah which Jake followed up on by saying that playing adventure games with another person was a great experience. I've actually been doing this for the last couple of days, with a game that Jake worked on no less. I've been playing the Strong Bad games with Tegan via Steam's new streaming feature. While it's not optimal (the lag has occasionally led to her suggesting something after I've done it), it's about as close to the couch experience as I've come thanks to the almost zero amount of effort it takes. Using something like Twitch to play a game with a specific person feels very cumbersome but with Steam's service it feels totally right. -
I'm going to prove Jake right and be one of those dorks right now: the burly brawl is actually from the second Matrix movie. The big fight scene in the third movie is Neo vs Smith in the rain (which was basically a DBZ style fight).

I had the same thought, although I was thinking of Brandon Laatsch's (formerly the non-Asian half of the former FreddieW channel and close collaborator with Corridor Digital) defunct movie

The way I wanted to do it was to make a big database of games, have new users pick at least a few to start with, then recommend reviewers rather than actual games. Reviews wouldn't be scored, rather they would be a simple "yes I recommend this game" or "no I don't recommend it". You could include a full review and talk about it in more depth if you so choose but I don't want things like "70% of users recommend this game". Metrics like that aren't useful to me and already exist all over the place. Basically I want subjective reviews.
-
Along similar lines, I've always wanted to create a user driven game review website where reviewers also make a list of games they liked/didn't like and people can find other reviewers with similar or different taste to get recommendations from. I think a general recommendation isn't useful if you don't know what kinds of things that reviewer likes.

The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring (HD) is currently available for free on the Google Play store right now.

Pixel Dungeon is my favorite Android game. It's my go to game when I'm not in the mood for something else. Here are some tips for beating it:

I don't know if this really counts as another podcast, but Idle Thumbs was asked What's the Best Video Game of All Time Edit: Discuss said podcast here

Let's give it a shot if we're all on tonight.

Some new DLC was released yesterday. It's a new heist and a new character. The heist involves stealing a diamond and the character is an Irish female named Clover. She comes with a new mask, weapon, and perk deck. There was also an update to the game that adds the ability to create and save skill/perk builds. HoxHud had a similar option built in but it cost money each time you switched because the mod would refund and repurchase the skill points every time you switched. The new native version doesn't cost money to switch. Once you make the initial investment you can switch between profiles without penalty. You get 2 slots for free, the third and fourth cost offshore money, and the fifth is tied to an achievement. The achievement for the fifth slot, Tabula Rosa, requires your entire team to do the Hoxton Breakout job on at least Overkill (three skull) difficulty with no skills, in suits, and using the Golden AK and Chicago Typewriter. I haven't tried any of the DLC (and probably won't buy it unless it goes massively on sale during the Steam winter sale). I'd like to try for the Tabula Rosa achievement but I'd much rather do it with a group I know than with randoms. Based on the requirements of the achievement, the best way seems to be everyone using the Rogue perk deck and a healthy dose of luck. If anyone would like to try any of this stuff, I'm game.

Hearthstone: Because what Magic really needed was F2P mechanics
SecretAsianMan replied to Problem Machine's topic in Video Gaming
Hearthstone recently came out for Android and I downloaded it last night. Because I'm entirely too lazy to read through this thread or do a search and I haven't yet created a Blizzard account, I'm going to ask dumb questions. Is this a strictly PvP game? Is there any kind of single player? -
Jason Momoa played a character on Stargate Atlantis named Ronan Dex who was basically that show's Conan (he even had a sword). I cannot help but think of the new Conan film as Ronan (the Barbarian).

Yeah, it became installable now. I was looking at the Play store online and I was told that it was incompatible with all my Google devices. I guess it just hadn't been "officially" released yet.

Congrats to the future Lord and Lady Remo (or maybe Lord and Lady Argodale. Or Lord Remo and Lady Argodale. Or Lord Argodale and Lady Remo. Some combination of those words).
-
I was actually thinking about trying out Hearthstone because I've been in a CCG mood lately, except it won't work on my Nexus 7 because it's a wifi-only model and apparently you have to have one with a carrier plan. So that's dumb.

I'm 99% sure I know who you're talking about but I'm not going to say who just yet. Not my place to announce something like this.

I said something similar when I first beat hell, yet here I am several months later and I'm still doing the daily challenge everyday.

Idle Thumbs 188: A Refined Baby
SecretAsianMan replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Maybe Mario rescues Peach like normal, but it's actually Warupeach in disguise and acts as a spy for Bowser. Or maybe she just fucks up Mario's shit. -
I might be up for that. I played Starbound for about 10 minutes then stopped because no one else I knew was playing it, even the original group of people I got the game from.

I actually did mess around with Terraria super briefly a couple weeks ago. Automatically running up a one block high tile wasn't present in the original release. They added a ton of stuff in like biomes, bosses, enemies, weapons, gear, NPCs, etc. Seeing it after such a long break, it feels like a completely different game.

I know exactly what you mean. I think Minecraft is cool and I marvel at the things people like to make/do in it, but I'm never compelled to do any of it myself. Having a big open sandbox is neat to me in theory, but in reality I like structure and defined goals. I played a lot of Terraria when it first came out (even ran a server for another forum) but I haven't gone back to it in a long time. I like that Terraria had a clearer sense of progression but the combat felt clunky to me, especially the platforming.

They should come with figures of scarred, grotesque men that she can chase around a lake and murder one by one.

DC's March 2015 variant covers are paying tribute to the last 100 years of film. They're all pretty great but I think Bill and Ted is my favorite

The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS

I would totally watch an animated Genndy Tartakovsky Mario movie.
