Actually, It's about Relocation in Games Journalism
SecretAsianMan replied to Architecture's topic in Video Gaming
Stuff like that is one of my main uses for Twitter. I follow Kotaku on there as well as some of the individual writers I care to read. I never actually just browse the site. Although I do agree with the other comments about the terrible layout. Granted, tweets are what clickbait headlines were made for so you have to watch out for those. I mostly do the same with other sites like Polygon because I just don't have the time or energy to simply keep checking the site for new content. -
This Battleblock Theatre run is fantastic. Once again, PJ does not disappoint.

I kind of felt the same way. I love the individual parts of it, the setting, the story, the characters. But taken as a whole they don't quite add up the way I'd like. I'd still suggest people play it though, if they're into those kinds of games. A personal side story about Primordia: I was at the Supergiant Booth during a PAX when they first showed off Transistor and while standing in line to play the demo I spoke to Logan Cunningham, who besides being the voice everyone recognizes from Bastion also voiced Horatio in Primordia. As I was talking to him, he didn't seem very interested in talking to me at first (I can't blame him, this was in the afternoon on the last day of the show) but when I mentioned how I enjoyed his work in Primordia as well he perked up a bit. He told me he hadn't gotten a chance to play it himself yet but said I was the first person outside of his friends/coworkers to recognize him in it and seemed to appreciate getting recognized for something other than Bastion.

Idle Thumbs 191: Not the Greatest, but the Best
SecretAsianMan replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I think that accurately describes me as well. My takeaways from the first time I saw Raiders were a guy getting skewered by a spike trap (a then unknown Alfred Molina), lots of snakes, and exploding/shriveling/melting heads. It wasn't until around the time that I saw Last Crusade that I was in a position to really understand what I was seeing. In retrospect, I now like Raiders and parts of Temple of Doom but Last Crusade will always be my favorite because its the first one I "got". -
I only died a handful of times while playing (I think like 3) and for that one I had to basically stand there and let him kill me in order to get it. It was kind of fun to be a sort of guardian angel from the shadows, helping this lowly grunt ascend the ranks to warchief. Then I shoved my knife into his neck.

Wrote my first date of the year and I didn't even mistakenly put 2014 as the year. I'm taking this as a good sign.

I THINK they're completely immune to the damage (because they usually deflect or block the arrow) including the fire but I'm not 100% sure.

When a chief is subjected to his weakness, he will instantly flee in terror (I believe this will trump any kind of rage/strength as well). His health bar should turn green and you'll get the little camera zoom animation showing him fleeing. At that point, no matter what his health is, he becomes grabable and brandable until he escapes. If you have the pin in place ability, you can shoot him in the leg to prevent him from running away (not sure if being immune to ranged attacks still applies while they're terrorized). The reason I didn't suggest fire arrows before was because of his immunity to ranged attacks. If he does die, then a new chief should be promoted in his place and you can go after that guy. If the guy who takes his place is already branded, then you're done! FYI, there's an achievement for getting killed by someone, then helping him become warchief before you get your revenge.

The most obvious suggestion I can think of would be to try and lure him near a fire or barrel and shoot that if at all possible. If that's not an option, you might try branding a small army of followers to take with you when you do fight him. No matter what their strengths are, very few chiefs can withstand being attacked by a mob. The tricky part with that will be branding him while he's weak before one of your minions straight up kills him, something that's happened to me many times.

Idle Thumbs 191: Not the Greatest, but the Best

I think I would have been fine with Crystal Skull if it had less Shia LaBeouf in it. He drives me nuts. The rest of the goofy, ridiculous shit I was fine with. -
I love the Games Done Quick marathons. I always end up spending a lot of time after the runs are over catching up on all the ones I missed. Hopefully I'll be able to catch some of it this year. I especially hope to catch at least one thing run by PJ. He's easily my favorite runner because his runs are always entertaining. His is probably my favorite speedrun ever.

That seems to be what Patrick has in mind. He's said that he still plans to continue Worth Reading and streaming horror games so at least two kinds of content that he made at GB will still be around in some form. I wouldn't be surprised if he had other stuff planned too. As for my personal opinion on Patrick being at Kotaku, I think it could be good because even though he was the "news guy" at GB, I never really thought of GB as a news site. At the very least it's not the first place I'd check for that kind of thing. Places like Polygon and Kotaku are my go-to's for checking on news stuff so it'll be nice to get more Klepek there. My main concern is his voice getting somewhat lost in the crowd because frankly a lot of the time at Kotaku I have no idea who's writing what. A lot of the time it doesn't matter to me. -
Idle Thumbs 191: Not the Greatest, but the Best

I actually like Ghostbusters II more than the first. I don't think it's a better movie, it just has the virtue of being the first one I saw. It set the expectation for me and in some ways I find the first movie to be more silly because a weird Sumerian deity who manifests a giant marshmallow monster on the roof of a building designed by a cultist architect made less sense to me than a long dead sorcerer coming back to life through a painting. -
The future is almost here! That magical year where the true potential of the PS3 will finally be unlocked! I can't wait until all those amazing PS3 games are revealed. Also hoverboards, flying cars, self-lacing shoes, self-adjusting and auto-drying jackets, double neckties, etc. The future is going to be amazing. But seriously, the new year is almost upon us. It might be a bit early but I'm making a resolution next year to finally get off my butt and make a game. Most likely a piece of shit game, but a game nonetheless. What about everyone else? Any thoughts on this coming year? Hopes? Fears?

2015: Year of the PS3... and Back to the Future II

Happy new year Thumbs My resolution this year is to make a game. A crappy dumb game that no one will play but a game nonetheless! -
My secret hope against hope is that Patrick is the new Idle Thumbs intern.

Idle Thumbs 190: A Very Spectrum HoloByte Christmas

I think Jake was (not so subtly) trying to tell me he's in need of more Nerds Ropes. Patience Jake. I also owe Danielle Jr. Mints. -
I also haven't played Super in a long time but I'm pretty sure that's the case. I don't remember saving ever being an issue in that game.

I started and finished playing all the episodes of Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People despite being neither cool nor attractive. Overall it was ok, full of the weird kind of humor you'd expect out of a game based on a flash cartoon. The puzzles were fairly simple most of the time, although a few were rather unintuitive. I'm sure I missed a lot of the humor since I'm not very familiar with Strong Bad. The main reason I played it was because I did it co-op with Tegan via Steam's streaming beta. The streaming delay would occasionally lead her to suggest an action to me that I had already started but otherwise it was a great way to play the game. It reminded me of playing the first Monkey Island game with a friend and is definitely a thing I will be doing again when I can.

One more thing related to Pixel Dungeon. There's a modded version of the game on the Play Store called Shattered Pixel Dungeon. It was posted with the permission of the original game's developer and does what you'd expect out of a mod. It rebalances some things and makes some changes such as adding in a new type of equipable item called artifacts. I quite like a lot of the changes and recommend it if you'd like to get some more variety in the game. Also added a few more tips to my previous post.

Despite my normal tendencies, I've actually started doing this. There are a bunch I don't plan on ever bothering to get but some of the interesting ones I'm going for. Just last night I managed to get Tabula Rasa with a random group. One thing that drove me nuts though was they kept saying it "ta-bool-a" instead of "tab-u-la". Even after I explained what the phrase means. *looks around to see if Gormongous is going to correct me*

Yeah, that's the most consistent method. It also works fairly well on the second boss if you have enough projectile weapons or potions of poison gas or fire. For the first boss, if you don't have a seed of earthroot, hit him until he starts shaking (the game will say he's pumping up) then move 2 spaces away from him. During that time he's charging a very powerful attack that hits in a 2 block radius. If you're out of range, he'll cancel the attack and come after you again. With a decent weapon and some luck, you can defeat him by getting him to chase you. Also I forgot to mention the various quests. Spoilered in case you want to discover this for yourself.

Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.
SecretAsianMan replied to Tanukitsune's topic in Video Gaming
I had the same thoughts about Mordor. I can see where the Nemesis system could make things interesting and I think there's potential in it, but when I was actually playing the game none of the strengths/weaknesses really had a significant impact on my encounters. Short of making them immune to everything or purposely limiting myself in some way, it was never hard for me and as a result the encounters never became memorable. -
Apparently if you sell more than 200 items and gross over $20,000 on the Steam market, they're required to report this to the IRS and you have to fill out a 1099 form. I was informed of this because I've apparently had 153 listings this year and when you get near 200 they ask if you'd like to give them your information in advance.
