  1. BATTLETOADS!

Battletoads is a staple at the Game Done Quick marathons so you can check those runs out to see it beaten fast (without warps too). For someone not super familiar with the game, it's difficulty is pretty high. But like most games of the era, a lot of it boils down to memorization. The Turbo Tunnels are probably the most infamous level of the game. There's a couple of levels that have a similar idea (like one where you ride a boogie board on a river or another where you ride a rocket). One thing I like about the game is the variety of level types. A lot of them are based on a common theme (a race of some type) but they still have a lot of variation even within that idea.
  2. The Great Debate: Legalization

Alcohol is a weird case with me. I have a fast metabolism but a low tolerance. The result of this combination is the range in which I actually enjoy myself is very small. I either don't have enough to do anything and I just process it all out, or I have way too much and get sick. Neither is particularly fun so I mostly just don't bother. I also don't like the way it tastes at all which is why I say I can merely tolerate it. I will say this though, it does make me better at some things. I tend to overthink things a lot and sometimes having a drink helps to quiet my thoughts enough that I get better at stuff (shooting pool for example). Well since you asked (sort of) one story I have is from Taiwan. My dad was there representing his company at a new factory opening. The night it opened, they had a party to celebrate. A bunch of tables were set up outside and each one had a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue (one of which I still have). My dad was basically the boss that night and we went around to various tables talking to several of the employees. At each table they would offer to toast with him. In Chinese culture it's considered rude to refuse such an offer (almost to the point of taboo) but my dad doesn't really drink at all. Instead, I took the drinks. I don't exactly remember that night very well but I had somewhere in the neighborhood of 12 shots in an hour. Needless to say I got very sick that night but it was still pretty fun.
  3. The Great Debate: Legalization

For me it's basically all those things. I was born in the early 80s so my childhood is a product of the late 80s/early 90s. As such I was subjected to things like D.A.R.E., after school specials, the War on Drugs, etc. I've grown beyond those things as I learned to think for myself but it's hard to shake them entirely. I dislike the feeling of losing control and therefore am inherently opposed to anything that contributes to this. And I really don't like the smell and taste. I just think its gross. The legality of it to me is an arbitrary thing so that doesn't really factor into me liking/disliking it beyond the concern that I could potentially get into legal trouble if I were somehow around it. None of those things means that I dislike anyone who choses to use it though, as long as they don't try to pressure me to do it as well. As for alcohol, I also dislike it but am able to tolerate it. The only time I really drink is in social situations and even then its a fairly rare occurrence, pretty much only when it would be rude to say no (I have a couple stories I could share about that but they're not related to this thread).
  4. Windows 10: "It wouldn't be right to call it Windows 9."

Microsoft is holding a Windows 10 event right now. I'm too busy at the moment to follow it very closely but one thing I did see was that users of Windows 7, 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1 can get a free upgrade to Windows 10 for the first year.
  5. Dreams!

I had an awesome dream last night. I dreamt that I Chris, Sean, and Jake lived in a house across the street from me. They had a giant bay window in their living room and I could see them doing stuff. Sean was asleep on the couch, Chris was in the corner with a guitar, and Jake was playing some kind of Kinect game which resulted in him jumping around like an idiot. One of them spotted me outside the window and we started talking. Then time suddenly skipped and we were at my house playing a Rock Band type game but it used the Kinect as well so we had a mix of fake instruments and air instruments. Also their girlfriends/spouses were there (except I only know what one of them looks like in real life so the others were amalgamations of celebrities). I think Danielle and her girlfriend were there at some point too. The whole thing turned into a big video game house party and it was probably the most fun I've ever had in a dream. And that includes a lucid dream I once had where I could fly.
  6. Life

I know what you mean. I'm using AT&T because I don't really have another choice. T-Mobile has terrible coverage at home and there's absolutely ZERO signal at work so it's simply not an option for me. I'm not a fan of Sprint either because I've used them before and got terrible customer service (although no technical issues to speak of).
  7. Life

I'm about ready for a new phone as well. My current phone (the Nexus 4) is starting to behave strangely, doing things like randomly turning itself off or the battery heating up more than usual. I love new tech but the practical part of me is strong enough to prevent me from getting a new one every year. That and the fact that I'm broke. Hopefully my phone will last until I can get another.
  8. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

I've passed a kidney stone before. I can confirm they are indeed the worst thing. Good luck with yours Zeus.
  9. Life

I recently got a pair of prescription safety glasses for work. One lens is slightly stronger than my normal glasses so whenever I put them on I have to take some time and adjust. It's mildly disorienting for a couple minutes but they are infinitely more comfortable than what I was previously doing, which was wearing a pair of non-prescription safety glasses over my normal ones.
  10. Cartoons!

Tegan slowly introduced me to Steven Universe over the weekend. We watched about half the current episodes thus far. Neat little show. Steven himself is kind of annoying and his shenanigans are starting to wear on me a bit (a problem I have with almost every character who's an idiot that manages to survive/save the day because of some goofy reason instead of actual competence). But the show's got a lot of nuances and quirks and hints at a lot of things which is the kind of stuff I love. So I'll probably keep watching it.
  11. Life

I used my health insurance for the first time today when I got my foot looked at. I feel like such a grown up!
  12. Awesome Games Done Quick 2015

A bit of clarification on this run. I didn't see the beginning of it and I assumed that playing one handed was an incentive, but it turns out that the runner (halfcoordinated) actually has a disability called hemiparesis which causes weakness in one side of his body so he plays one handed by necessity. The incentive that was met was him holding a soda in the other hand. Later the bromance incentive was met and he held another person's hand.
  13. Life

It's pretty minor as far as these things go. Don't need a cast or splint or anything. They just taped it to the next toe and told me to take it easy for a couple days. Got me out of work early though.
  14. Life

So I went to work this morning after kicking the wall because I didn't think it was that bad. After a couple hours, I took a look at it and my toe had started to turn purple. I figured I had better get it looked it. One doctor visit later, and I have indeed broken my toe. First time I've ever broken anything. Only took me 30 years.
  15. Idle Thumbs 193: General Interest

Random thoughts: I want to make an Idle Thumbs Venn Diagram generator based on Chris's overlap of QWOP, Kerbal, and Naut. The center of every one is Chris's face with Spelunky underneath. I'm amused that Spelunky is still constantly brought up as Chris's thing when I'm pretty sure that he hasn't played it in months and all the recent activity on his Steam account for the game has actually been Sarah. When I heard the terms of Disney's housing contract, I noted that one of the groups of people who couldn't be held responsible was shareholders. Does this mean I could buy some stock in Disney and get away with murder?
  16. Life

I banged my pinkie toe this morning as I was drowsily stumbling to the bathroom. It hurt a lot at the time but the pain has gone down since then. I hope I don't have a broken toe, I've never broken a bone in my life.
  17. The Great Debate: Legalization

I don't like weed. I don't like the way it looks, I don't like the way it smells, I don't like the way it tastes. I think its gross and want nothing to do with it (although I would use products made from hemp such as paper or clothing so long as they in no way reminded me what they were made from). All that said, I'm totally in favor of the legalization. And that's all I have to say on the subject.
  18. Idle Digging - Shovel Knight

As someone who is quite nostalgic and has played and enjoyed most, if not all, of the classic games that are often referenced as influences in Shovel Knight, I have to say I'm not into the game at all. I don't think it's bad, I don't think it's poorly made. Quite the opposite in fact. I recognize what people liked about it and agree that it was done well. But frankly nothing about it grabbed me the same way those original games did. I had to force myself to finish the game and once I did I promptly forgot all about it. The music is great, the aesthetic is pleasing, the gameplay is pretty solid, so really I should have loved it. I just don't at all and I can't entirely explain why. It's my most personally disappointing game from last year. I was really looking forward to playing it and really bummed out that I didn't care for it in the slightest.
  19. Idle Thumbs 193: General Interest

I was not familiar with the term vaping until this podcast. If you asked me what it was before, I probably would have given you a horrible gross definition.
  20. The terrible wallet scourge of the Amiibo.

Have these things been hacked yet? I can't imagine it would be that hard to back the data up to pretty much any NFC tag with enough capacity.
  21. They're taking my Freeze Peach!

I have nothing useful to add to this thread but I'll jump on the bandwagon and say the thread title is terrible and needs to change. In case you're not sure how to, edit your first post and use the full editor. This will let you edit the thread title as well.
  22. Nintendo 3DS

While dumb, I'm personally not inconvenienced by there only being an XL because it fits my big hands better. Not including an AC adaptor is insane though.
  23. Firewatch Writing Q&A with Famous
  24. The Xbox One won an Emmy Award for Television Enhancement Devices which is apparently a real category. Go figure.
