  1. Life

If you wanna learn about Star Trek, have I got the thread for you. Also congrats!
  2. Super Metroid Appreciation Station

The SA-X is important to the game's story and shows up in the scenes a lot, but as far as your actual interaction with it, yeah it's really disappointing. I remember on several playthroughs playing cat and mouse with it, seeing how long I could keep dodging and avoiding it. Not that I'd want a whole game made out of it or anything, but I think it'd be amazing if the SA-X had an actual AI and would wander the game, leading to sudden and unexpected encounters instead of scripted sequences with obvious ways of escaping it.
  3. Broken Age - Double Fine Adventure!

Yeah, today is the early backer release. The general public release is supposed to be tomorrow so it'll be out there.
  4. Broken Age - Double Fine Adventure!

You could try updating your Kickstarter backer info. Can you still access your old email? Maybe its in there.
  5. Unnecessary Comical Picture Thread

I'd consider myself mature, but I don't know that I qualify as super mature. Looks like it's not for me.
  6. Unnecessary Comical Picture Thread

I'm strangely curious about that Clippy erotic fiction. How does that even work?
  7. Damn it, but computers have become really complicated

I used to use Microsoft's as well, but a couple years ago they started bombing at protection tests so I run it in conjunction with another AV. Right now I'm still with Avast but after reading what I posted above I might take my own advice and switch to Bitdefender.
  8. Gabe Newell had a reddit AMA about the mod situation. Some interesting bits: The cut that modders get is set by the game's developers. So in the case of Skyrim, the 25% wasn't Valve's call, it was Bethesda's There will be a "pay what you want" option. The mod creator can set whatever starting amount they wish, including $0 If this doesn't help make modding better for authors and gamers, then it will get dumped. Paid mods are an extension of content contributors being paid by the community
  9. Damn it, but computers have become really complicated

I use Avast as well and haven't really noticed the problems you're having, but if you're serious about looking for an alternative, AV-Comparatives does a summary report each year. They do independent testing of anti-virus software. Their report is rather comprehensive, even going into detail about the usability of each one. I'd give it a look. Their 2014 product of the year pick, above both Avast and AVG, was Bitdefender, which has a free version.
  10. I had imagined it being phrased like Lionel Hutz's ad from the Simpsons
  11. Broken Age - Double Fine Adventure!

I got an email from both Humble and Kickstarter telling me it was released. The instructions on the Humble page for unlocking it in Steam are: Install Broken Age Right click and select "Properties" Click on the "Betas" tab Enter your code and select "Check Code" (there was a code in my email from the Humble store, I assume it's that) Select the branch "Beta - Beta Branch" Wait for the game to download Play the game! I'm still at work right now so I haven't tried any of this.
  12. I understand your point as well. I'll totally acknowledge that it is interesting to take a perfect notion and put it to the test. When push comes to shove, will we hold our ideals? Or do we do whatever it takes no matter the cost? I also realize that none of those questions have any weight without the setup put in place by TNG of what the Federation is like. It gives meaning to the war and the actions of those in it. And admittedly this is the kind of thing that sci-fi in general really excels at when done correctly. I just felt like it wasn't really Star Trek apart from having Klingons and Cardassians and Ferengi and a bunch of other things that were previously seen in other Star Treks. I feel like if I replaced all the Star Trek specific races and visuals while changing nothing else, I'd have mostly the same show. That's of course an entirely personal opinion and I'd never begrudge anyone enjoying Star Trek in whatever way they want. And as an aside to your comment about BSG, that's one of the reasons I couldn't get into that show. I could never identify with any of the characters and felt like none of them were redeemable. That and I fucking HATE shaky cam. One thing I really like about Star Trek's visual effects is that they're slow and deliberate so that you always know exactly what's going on. I could never follow any space battle in BSG because that camera was moving around so much I had no idea what was happening.
  13. Broken Age - Double Fine Adventure!

It's out now for backers! Go play it!
  14. This is my problem with the show. I think it's good, I just don't think it's good Star Trek. What I mean by that is I would have liked it more if the show wasn't set in the Star Trek universe. Keep the characters and plots (mostly) the same, just don't make them have anything at all to do with Star Trek and I think the show would have been much better. Maybe it gains something by having a continuity to expand from with characters and races that are somewhat familiar, but it really just does it own thing with those anyway. There were several times that I had to remind myself that it was a Star Trek show and not another franchise altogether. And to be clear, I'm not opposed to the idea of a show going in different directions and trying new things. But I feel that DS9 went so far beyond the borders of what I'd expect from Star Trek that it was mostly unrecognizable as such. Whether that's good or bad is a matter of opinion.
  15. Life

My Nexus 4 finally died today. I won't turn on at all. It's been acting up a lot for the past few months and I planned to get a new one soon anyway so it's not all bad. Went out today and got a Galaxy S6. Now to spend the next few hours setting it up and downloading all my apps again.
  16. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

That topic is being discussed over in the Business Side of Games thread.
  17. Life

On the way to my first night shift of this outage, I got a call while I was still in the car that there was a problem. I was about 10 minutes away from the plant. Luckily, it turned out to not be a big deal but still, not a good start.
  18. I think Dooku's sith name, Darth Tyranus, is also dumb.
  19. Damn it, but computers have become really complicated

After looking at the specs for the upcoming Arkham Knight, I think I'm going to have to upgrade soon as well.
  20. Broken Age - Double Fine Adventure!

Part 2 is coming on Monday for backers! Wooooo! And it sounds like the public release is coming the next day.
  21. Life

That's pretty much exactly what it is. Except for that second part.
  22. And it should come with an accordion peripheral.
  23. Life

This weekend is the start of our Spring outage, which for me means lots of overtime and working the night shift. This one's relatively short compared to most, but there's a lot of stuff happening that could be problematic if it doesn't go well. Hopefully it will.
  24. Maximum Axiom Verge Urge

The PC release date is May 14. It'll be $20 on either Steam or the Humble Store. The Steam version comes with cloud saves and trading cards. The Vita date still hasn't been announced yet, but it is cross-buy with the PS4. I can't wait to satisfy my Verge Urge.
  25. Star Wars VII - Open spoilers

I want the arm to be grafted onto someone and have it slowly take them over, like in Metal Gear Solid 2. Or even better: his arm gains sentience and becomes the Star Wars version of Thing from the Addams Family.
