Idle Thumbs 223: Troll Clone Today
SecretAsianMan replied to Chris's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Even though I've seen the video of the mall robot being harassed, the scenario concocted in the podcast makes me think of it as a progenitor to Five Night At Freddy's. A robot that goes around threatening and terrifying children while observed from security cameras. I wonder what it does at night... -

If anyone's still looking for a list of highlights, I have a going that I've been adding runs I think were good either because of the gameplay or the runner. Right now the list is Tetris: The Grand Master by TGM crew - Amazing tetris gameplay. My favorite moment was during Sakura mode when the runner messed up the sequence only to get back on route later because he knew the order so well. Hotline Miami 2 by Duke_bilgewater - I don't particularly like the Hotline Miami games but I had fun watching this run Half-Minute Hero by Essentia - Lots of explanation of the game because each segment is so short. Also one of the few female runners. Kirby: Tilt N Tumble by danray2352 - An amusing run because in order to stream the game, they had to use a Gamecube with a gameboy player, resulting in the runner playing the game by holding and tilting the entire Gamecube. They had a hand cam to show him playing it. Kirby Superstar by usedpizza - Another Kirby game with a hand cam. At times he has to enter so many inputs in such a short time that his hand becomes a blur. Bionic Commando: Rearmed 2 by PJ - An absolutely hilarious run by PJ in which he makes the main character in the game constantly scream like a maniac I Wanna be the Boshy by Witwix - While not as entertaining as his AGDQ run, still a pretty fun watch. It also featured Ray Narvaez Jr., formerly of Rooster Teeth/Achievement Hunter fame, sitting on the couch. Luigi's Mansion 3-way race by Boohead86, Firedragon764, and Veman300 - A good race with a hilarious ending Pokemon Puzzle League by CardsoftheHeart and FFRPro21 - Memorizing gameplay Super Mario 64 any% race by 360Chrism and GamerDomey - Short but super impressive Super Mario 64 100% 3-way race by cheese05, puncayshun, and Simply - Pretty good run with good commentary. One notable thing is this is the run where the $1 million mark was passed. Chrono Trigger by Puwexil and Essentia - The closing run of the marathon. Ridiculously long but a good watch if you can make it through.

Windows 10: "It wouldn't be right to call it Windows 9."
SecretAsianMan replied to Urthman's topic in Idle Banter
There is a setting in Windows 10 under Settings > Privacy > Speech, Inking, & Typing called "Getting to Know You" which does say it collects info including "speech and handwriting patterns, and typing history". I think this is the 'keylogger' most people were concerned about. Microsoft had this to say about it: Provided you believe them, it doesn't literally send Microsoft a complete transcript of all your keystrokes. Even still, I turned it off. -
I'd still rather have one of these

Windows 10: "It wouldn't be right to call it Windows 9."
SecretAsianMan replied to Urthman's topic in Idle Banter
The way I understand it, the Windows product key is tied to your motherboard. If you do a clean install of Windows 10 onto a system that the upgrade was applied to, it shouldn't ask you for a product key unless you swapped motherboards. In that sense the Windows 7 or 8 keys are good. However, what I don't think you can do is download the Windows 10 ISO and use a 7 or 8 key to activate it. I think you HAVE to apply the upgrade THEN do a clean install. Which is silly but I guess they just don't think it's going to be a common occurrence. -
Queequeg?

Are you having problems reinstalling Windows 7 then upgrading again or are you trying a clean Windows 10 install from the iso? -
Damn it, but computers have become really complicated
SecretAsianMan replied to Erkki's topic in Idle Banter
It depends on whether you have a retail copy of Windows or an OEM version. OEM Windows licenses are tied to the "device" which for all intents and purposes at Microsoft means the motherboard, so you won't be able to transfer your Windows 10 license there. If you have a retail copy, then you can transfer that between devices so a new motherboard should work. -
Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.
SecretAsianMan replied to Tanukitsune's topic in Video Gaming
Most of the time when I quit a game it's not because I actively stop playing it but I just never get back to it. Something will come up and I'll just forget about it until I realize I have no more interest in going back. The break usually makes me think of what I liked/disliked about the game and if I decide that I didn't enjoy it I won't return. While this thread has never caused me to change my mind about a game I quit, it has on occasion made me replay a game I did finish that someone else quit. -

The problem is that once something worked, I had little reason to stop using it. Every time I tried to experiment I'd usually end up with worse results so I felt discouraged to keep trying that. If I have to keep changing after every fight to make it work, it stops being fun for me. In Bastion, I'd keep a weapon combo going through the entire level so I'd get lots of use out if it before switching to something else. -

Skillful is probably a poor word choice on my part. What I meant by that was that in Transistor my ability to get through an encounter was really tied to what functions I had equipped (or more specifically what functions I didn't have), whereas in Bastion I never felt that limitation. While I certainly had weapon combinations I preferred, I never really had a problem getting through Bastion based solely on my weapon choice and I definitely had that problem at times in Transistor. -

SecretAsianMan replied to Tanukitsune's topic in Video Gaming
That's part of the reason I liked Bastion over Transistor. If your loadout wasn't suited well to the situation, you could still deal with it using skillful play. In Transistor, I felt like if I had a bad loadout in a given situation I was fairly screwed. That's part of what made me not want to try out other functions. -

I'll backup Tanukitsune. I never finished it either. I really like Supergiant (Bastion is one of my favorite games ever and probably my favorite soundtrack) and I love all the artistic elements of the game like the visuals, sound, and storytelling. I just... really hated playing it. Part of that is my own personal tastes because I don't enjoy turn based games very much but the hybrid of turn based and real time felt very frustrating to me. I felt like most of the time playing was running around aimlessly dodging while waiting for a cooldown timer. I didn't find a use for most of the functions I was getting because I never felt a need to try new combinations. I like the mechanic of positioning affecting combat (one of my favorite parts of Chrono Trigger's combat) but the movement never felt good to me and I feel like I had to fiddle with it too much in order to get the result I wanted. It's such a shame because I really, REALLY wanted to like Transistor. I don't think the game is bad, it just didn't click with me the way Bastion did. -
I don't think that naming Crono Iwata was done knowing the character would die. It didn't occur to me until the run was underway and I contributed toward that name. I don't really find it in bad taste unless people were contributing specifically BECAUSE he dies. I saw it as touching, the idea that people were literally raising money for charity in his name. Besides, I'll gladly take Iwata over something like Goku or Jesus (the former was the third place name and the latter strikes me as actually being in bad taste) both of which were possible names people submitted donations for.
-
I'd probably know most of the levels if I saw them, but as it stands I don't recognize a lot because I was never the kind of person who learned the names of maps/levels so the name alone means almost nothing to me.

There is definitely a degree of self-congratulation towards gaming in general going on, but I can't say that I blame anyone for wanting to take pride in something that is actually positive. Also a lot of that is aimed toward the runners and GDQ staff, most of whom are not getting compensated in any way and are mostly doing this out of the goodness of their own hearts. I imagine there are probably some donations with truly shitty comments that got filtered out by the staff, but I'd like to think they're few and far between.

Windows 10: "It wouldn't be right to call it Windows 9."

Just installed Windows 10. Seems fine so far. -
To drill down a little further on this, I'd argue that pretty much every aspect of a game is going to be temporary. A game that looked amazing a few years ago looks like crap compared to the latest offerings. Gameplay concepts get refined and evolve, even storytelling has grown. What this says to me is that price is simply another point on the score scale and that by trying to tie a "value" to a game via its price is simply another angle to look for that mythical "objective" score.

Can I completely derail this conversation with something else? I normally hate hashtag movements and the mostly stupid selfies that follow them, but I'm digging #ILookLikeAnEngineer because as a male engineer it's really nice to see more women appearing in this heavily male dominated field.

What's funny to me about comparing the price of games to movies is that people complain about the price of movies all the time. I hear people complain about the price, the fact that it's too crowded, and the fact that if you're in the theatre at the movie's start time you get 30 minutes of commercials before the movie starts. I'm of course talking about major studio releases and not smaller indie films.

I totally forgot they reviewed a chocolate bar. Has anyone actually tried it?
-
I need a suggestion for good chocolate. I don't like chocolate but I'm getting someone a gift and I'd rather not just get a Hershey bar or something.
