  1. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

I have such mixed feelings about ME2. I enjoyed the gameplay in ME2 way more (although I was annoyed by the switch to an actual ammo system instead of the weapon overheating) but the story was ruined for me. It's not the narrative's fault, it's a technical issue. Sometime after ME1 but before ME2 my save got corrupted or lost and I really didn't have it in me to spend another 40 hours recreating it so I started ME2 from scratch. Every personal thing I previously did was lost and I was no longer invested in the story I was being told which resulted in the experience falling flat. The scenario I was given used almost the exact opposite of everything I had done. While I liked the loyalty missions (especially the ones that put two of your crew members at odds with each other) the main story felt lacking to me.
  2. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

I had a couple friends in college who would use the numpad for movement. Their reasoning was that it was like WASD with easy key accessibility but less likelihood of hitting the wrong thing since the numpad is usually grouped by itself. It seemed weird to me at the time but they were all pretty darn good at games like TF2 so I can't really argue with the results. These days I use a separate gamepad for games that require one hand on the keyboard. Currently I'm using this
  3. Happy Birthday!

Happy birthday Amy! Also RubixsQube I guess. Just kidding, happy birthday for reals.
  4. Feminism

I went to a school that had a greek system with frat houses on campus. Even though it's not a party school at all (in fact quite the opposite) the greek part of it was still pretty gross. As a naïve freshmen I considered trying to join one but it quickly became apparent they were disgusting so I joined an independent co-ed organization instead. I remember one house had a pair of white lion statues in front of it that they would paint in various colors from time to time and supposedly when the lions were painted red it meant that someone in the house had taken a girl's virginity (not necessarily unwillingly but a terrible tradition nonetheless). While I don't recall any rape cases, there were at least two frats during my time there that got themselves kicked off of campus for various infractions. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that rape was one of them considering the extremely sexist attitude of my freshman roommate who later joined one of the frats.
  5. Math Thread of Fancy Counting

This is only partially related to math but I can't not post this. So Terrence Howard seems to think that 1x1 does not equal 1 but in fact equals 2. He's apparently created an entire system he calls 'Terryology'. His reasoning is He also claims to have reasoned out why bubbles make spheres instead of triangles or squares and that his logic would blow the mind of Pythagoras or Einstein if they were present.
  6. Nintendo announced that Tatsumi Kimishima will succeed Iwata as the company's president. He was previously the president of Nintendo of America until Reggie Fils-Aime took over. He recently also served as the managing director of Nintendo, general manager of the General Affairs Division, and managing director of the human resources branch. It remains to be seen if he'll be as public a figure as Iwata was. The company is also undergoing some organizational restructuring, including naming Genyo Takeda as "technology fellow" and Shigeru Miyamoto as "creative fellow". Nintendo's description of 'fellow' basically sounds like another name for a department head.
  7. Idle Thumbs 227: Quiet The Clown

Danielle describing the MGS camera when Quiet is on screen almost sounded like she was personifying the camera, which then somehow led to me thinking of it as being manned like in Mario 64, which in turn led to me imagining Lakitu being the MGS cameraman. Now in my mind Lakitu is a perverted turtle thing that likes to fly around on his cloud and film women's cleavage.
  8. Idle Thumbs 227: Quiet The Clown

I was getting paranoid that the candy didn't arrive so I'm glad to hear it did. Also I had no idea there was a bonus prize inside the pacifiers but that turned out better than I could have hoped.
  9. Windows 10: "It wouldn't be right to call it Windows 9."

My clean install of 10 still hasn't activated yet, but as of today it's started telling me to connect to the internet to activate Windows. I'm obviously connected (I'm typing this post on that computer right now) but it can't seem to tell? I don't know if this is better or worse.
  10. Feminism

As someone who's played several God of War games but not many MGS games, here's my take on it: In GoW, the sex is very obvious. It's literally a mini-game (that you don't even see happening) which is completely optional and lasts for about 5 seconds. There are also other boobs and stuff but they're almost all presented as "here's a mythological creature that has her tits out hehehe". That's puerile sure, but it's at least straightforward. In MGS, there's such an obvious attempt to justify boobs that it puts me off. If you want to have scantily clad women because you like it, then fine. But don't try to spoon feed me some contrived reason for why that is or attempt to cover up the fact that you're trying to titillate your audience. In other words I agree with that Eurogamer article.
  11. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

I'm still playing Fallout Shelter. One thing that's really bugging me is my vault layout, which is largely unchangeable now because of a dumb game design. The game won't let you destroy any living spaces if doing so would drop you below the number of dwellers you have. You would think you could get around this by building new living quarters and destroying the old ones, but once you reach the population limit of 200 the game doesn't allow you to build any more living quarters. So now I'm stuck in this position of wanting to redo my layout but having several spaces occupied by living quarters I can't remove. I may have to take a page from the Chris Remo book and have a few... accidents with some dwellers.
  12. Feminism

We actually have a thread about that entire concept (by which I mean creating a convoluted backstory to justify sexiness)
  13. PAX 2015

I know exactly what you're talking about now. I've never really been into pastries so they're not really my thing. Even given that though, they are pretty good.
  14. PAX 2015

Can you describe it? Maybe I can tell you what it's called so you'll know next time.
  15. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

This conversation is reminding me that I really need to finish Act 2. Or at least, you know, start it.
  16. Recently completed video games

Finished Lara Croft GO. It's mostly the same as Hitman GO with Tomb Raider aesthetics, although there are some gameplay changes such as traps, wall climbling, and even a boss fight. It's pretty short, 41 levels across 5 chapters. There are some collectables along the way but they don't require any puzzle solving beyond simply spotting a jar in the background and tapping on it. It lacks the objectives that Hitman GO had such as clearing a level with a certain number of moves or not killing any enemies. The puzzles seemed easier as well. It's not bad overall but I'd say Hitman GO was better. Hopefully they'll add more levels to Lara Croft like they did with Hitman. I'd also like to see more games get a GO version.
  17. Android Games

Lara Croft GO came out a few days ago and I've been playing it. It doesn't have exactly the same look as Hitman GO (Lara and all the creatures have actual models with animation rather than sliding boardgame pieces) but it looks good. The basic gameplay in both games is identical. They're both puzzle games with turn based movement laid out on a grid. The differences between them are mostly aesthetic. There are creatures that have similar patterns to the enemies in Hitman such as facing one direction, moving along a set path, or chasing after you once spotted. There are some new things. There are traps such as saw blades and floor/wall tiles that will break if you use them a second time. There are levers and buttons that can change the configuration of the board and a few of the puzzles involve pushing columns around. Lara can also climb along certain walls. Certain levels have a spear that Lara can pick up and carry with her. It allows her to kill a single enemy from a distance. You can still kill them by coming at them from behind or the sides. That part is a little weird to me. She uses her twin pistols to kill when you move into their space but she can't shoot from a distance and instead has to use a spear. Gameplay wise I get it but it's still kinda goofy. One other difference is that LCGO lacks the puzzle objectives that Hitman has. The only goal in each board is to get to the exit. There are collectables hidden along the way, but they're all located inside jars placed in the background that you simply tap on to break. They unlock additional costumes for Lara. TL;DR if you liked Hitman GO, you'll probably like Lara Croft GO as well.
  18. The terrible wallet scourge of the Amiibo.

Reposting myself from the video game Business thread:
  19. A bit of clarification for the Shovel Knight amiibo: it's not being made by Nintendo, it's being made and distributed by Yacht Club Games themselves. They've basically licensed the right to make an amiibo from Nintendo. So while it seems unlikely this is a sign of indie characters in Smash or anything like that, it does open the door for third parties to make their own amiibos.
  20. Jeff Goldblum

That's it, we're done. Nothing can top this https://twitter.com/chrisremo/status/637483996524343297
  21. Idle Thumbs 225: Read Our Lips

Because it was mentioned, here's the Kaizo Mario run from AGDQ 2015 (it wasn't run at SGDQ this year)
  22. Movie/TV recommendations

I'm actually having that same debate with myself. Just wanted to point it out since we talked about it recently.
  23. The threat of Big Dog

Boeing has unveiled a prototype drone killing laser. It's specifically designed target and destroy drones by using a high precision laser to burn through the case and destroy whatever part of the drone you're targeting. I think my favorite part is that it can be controlled with an Xbox 360 controller. I wonder if this is the first step of a human-robot arms race.
  24. Movie/TV recommendations

Going briefly back to The Martian, the book is on sale for $2 on the Google Play store.
  25. Idle Sugar

I'm not a big fan of chocolate but I love peanut butter so I prefer Reese's Pieces.
