My almost my entire friends list is playing Fallout 4 right now.

A villain who wants to take over the world is far too cartoonish to be taken seriously. However everyone can get behind the idea of wanting revenge against someone who was once an asshole to you. Saving the world is just a bonus.

I tried using that mode in Arkham Knight. It's (mostly) fine for looking around but for navigating menus its terrible, especially radial ones.
-
I remember playing Fallout 3 with a controller and trying to pick up a tiny microfusion cell in a pile of garbage was one of the most frustrating things I've ever experienced. If you can use both mouse and controller it sounds like the Steam controller would be well suited for this game.

In theory Betamax was a superior format because it had higher quality but it was a commercial failure because it cost much more than VHS given the differences. For most people VHS quality was good enough that it wasn't worth the extra expense to get Beta. Plus VHS could record for more than an hour.

If anyone here remembers Betamax (I'm just old enough to have seen one on a store shelf), Sony is going to FINALLY stop selling tapes next March. Time to stock up!

A Dedicated Thread For Talking About Star Trek Episodes
SecretAsianMan replied to BigJKO's topic in Movies & Television
I'm pretty sure it will be this regardless of what characters you use or don't use. Also the fact that it's a CBS only thing means I'm probably never going to watch it. -
I've only played Uncharted 2 but I didn't find it to be especially noteworthy in the way that everyone was talking about. Honestly it felt like the definition of middle ground, not doing anything wrong but nothing that blew me away either.

I remember really liking certain parts of Lost Planet 2. I specifically remember one mission where you use a railgun mounted on a train to kill a giant akrid. It required a lot of coordination because the gun had to be aimed, fired, and reloaded at separate stations. I somehow managed to achieve this with a group of random people and it was amazing.

Have you had one of them say "Its a trap!" yet?

I finally got around to installing this and giving it a try. I pre-ordered the game from GMG but waited on the install after all the stories about the game running like garbage. There are still a significant number of people who are having problems running the game even after the second release that supposedly fixes things. Personally, the game has been running fine for me, although I should mention that I have a GTX980. The worst performance I've seen thus far is when I'm perched on top of a really tall building looking across the city in the rain while the wind blows my cape around. The frame rate drops a noticeable amount but it picks back up once I start moving away. As for the game itself, I'm only a few hours in but so far its fun. The story feels kind of all over the place, but that's a common open world game issue when you try to do side quests concurrently with the main story. The Riddler in particular is really getting annoying. I actually liked getting the Riddler trophies and solving the puzzles in the other games, but I think that gimmick has worn out its welcome and now he's just irritating. Especially his villain gloating. All the villains have pretty standard comic book banter in this game but his makes me want to skip his side quests just so I don't have to listen to him. I'm not super into the Batmobile either. I keep wanting to use the left trigger to brake and instead enter tank mode (which I guess does stop the car but not the way I intended). Also I'm used to using the left bumper for detective mode and keep accidentally summoning my armored chariot instead. For the first few hours, I tried using the Steam controller for the game but I just couldn't do it. The stick and buttons work fine, but the pad makes a terrible substitute stick. I've tried several different configurations but none of them work very well. If the game supported using both the mouse and controller at the same time then I could have the pad emulate a mouse and it would probably work the way I want. The closest is a setting that tries to emulate a mouse while sending the game control stick input but it makes things very fiddly, especially when trying to use a radial menu. I've gone back to the Xbox controller and my gameplay has improved considerably.

What makes a cappella weird? Sometimes it's fun to just sing something without music or needing any instruments. If you can find a group of people to do it with, even better!
-
I think the closest I've ever been to actually seeing a singing telegram is that one scene in the Clue movie where a woman knocks on the front door of the mansion and delivers a singing telegram (and is promptly shot).

Apparently singing telegrams are still a thing because I saw a sign on the road advertising such a service.

Idle Thumbs 235: Plaited Haircut of the Whale
SecretAsianMan replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
For this week's pedantic post: Dwellers in Fallout Shelter take half as long to return to the shelter as they've been exploring. So sending one out for an hour means it will take 30 minutes to get back. Also it's loosely related to Fallout 4 in that some of the legendary characters and weapons you can get from lunchboxes are from Fallout 4. -
Downwell! Gun Boots! Treasure Collecting! Falling!
SecretAsianMan replied to RubixsQube's topic in Video Gaming
I'll get the membership card if I see it early because it can pay off in the long run but not at the expense of more immediately useful upgrades. Youth I'll also grab early if I can. I never pass up the blast module. The rest are fairly circumstantial. The one upgrade I've never used is the one that extends gem high time. -
The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS

In what may be the unholiest of unions, Activision Blizzard is acquiring King Digital Entertainment for $5.9 Billion. Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, and Candy Crush Saga will all soon be made by the same company. -
Downwell! Gun Boots! Treasure Collecting! Falling!
SecretAsianMan replied to RubixsQube's topic in Video Gaming
I agree it's super fun, all I'm saying is that it's not literally necessary to beat the game so I'm ok with it not being explicitly spelled out. I tend to favor powerful weapons that have fewer shots (like the shotgun or laser) so charges are a priority for me. But I usually just buy whatever is available for me regardless of what it is. -
I agree that it's a shitty thing and I hate wasting time as much as the next person, but blocking them entirely is taking away even that piddling amount. It's like my stance on tips. I've mentioned before how much I hate the concept of tipping and I think it's a terrible model that needs to be done away with, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to tip my server. It's not their fault for being trapped in a crappy practice like that. I'm not going to hurt them further for something beyond their control, especially if it's within my capability to help.

Damn it, but computers have become really complicated
SecretAsianMan replied to Erkki's topic in Idle Banter
I considered one of those too. I ended up going with that Cyberpower one. Haven't needed to use it yet but so far it seems pretty good. -
All the techs and workers here are either union or contractors. At one point I was told the engineers considered unionizing but those plans fell through for some reason. In other work related news, I got a page on Sunday (yes, I have to carry a pager in this day and age) that said the night shift was over and I could return to working days. We usually get a few days off in order to make the transition and I was all set to stay awake all day today so that I could sleep tonight. Then I got another page saying that there was a problem and I was needed back on night shift for another day or two. So my already messed up sleep schedule got even more messed up. Now I'm in the office, completely alone, and there's literally nothing going on that requires my assistance.

I'm nearing the end of what is hopefully going to be my last night shift for a year. It's about time too, some of the guys are here are starting to get a little stir crazy. I'm about ready to join them.

Downwell! Gun Boots! Treasure Collecting! Falling!
SecretAsianMan replied to RubixsQube's topic in Video Gaming
I think one could argue that maintaining gem-highs could also be called a meta game even though it has an actual effect, as could the combo system (above 25 anyway). I'd compare wall jumping to something more like whipping arrows or landing safely on spikes with a cape, mechanics that are in the game and can contribute to higher level play but aren't explained at all nor necessary for basic play. -

SecretAsianMan replied to RubixsQube's topic in Video Gaming
But as you said, those are the basics. There's a lot of other more advanced stuff that's not really explained at all in the game, such as the conditions necessary to reach Hell, the "true" end of the game. You can still "beat" the game without them but a lot of stuff is left unsaid. Those are the things I'm comparing to Downwell's wall jump and gem-high. Also I don't think the tutorial was optional, unless you only did the daily challenge and never the main game. The cave to enter normal adventure mode isn't open until you complete the tutorial. After that then it becomes a separate door that you can enter at will. -
Idle Thumbs 234: Mister Neighbor
SecretAsianMan replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I actually used to live in the real Mr. Roger's Neighborhood. It's near where I went to college. I'm currently working the night shift and my place of work is kind of out away from everything. I take a road through some woods to get here. Right in the middle of the talk about Resident Evil and other such games an animal of some kind ran out in front of my car and SCARED THE SHIT OUT OF ME. I had to swerve a bit to avoid it. Felt like more than coincidence.
