Damn it, but computers have become really complicated
SecretAsianMan replied to Erkki's topic in Idle Banter
I completely understand wanting to get the most bang for your buck. The last 3 or 4 desktop computers I've had I built. I just got tired of having to deal with researching parts, compatibility, and troubleshooting. Plus the amount of time those things cost. What I'm really sick of is the "PC master race" mentality where anyone who didn't build their own is looked down upon with scorn (I'm not accusing anyone here of doing that but I have sympathy for console gamers who think PC gamers are elitist snobs). -
But he's able to steal and operate a vehicle (that I'm going to assume isn't commonly operated in that time). Even a young kid today playing with a toy car knows that driving it over the edge of something is only going to result in falling off of said edge. If he didn't know how to stop that would be one thing but he purposefully ACCELERATES toward the edge. In all fairness, I do like the movie as a whole. I just think Kirk's introduction is incredibly dumb. Spock's was much better as it showed his internal Human/Vulcan conflict.

The use of Sabotage is probably the thing that bothers me the least about that scene. He opens the top while going at full speed, then seems surprised that it just flies off. He drives straight toward a cliff then bails at the last second and just barely manages to save himself. If the point of that scene was to demonstrate to me that Kirk is a complete moron*, congrats you've succeeded brilliantly. *Granted Kirk is an act first think later kind of guy but that doesn't mean he's an idiot. Or at least he shouldn't be. After all he was the one who pieced together that "lighting in space + Klingon distress signal = bad things" later in the movie.

A Dedicated Thread For Talking About Star Trek Episodes
SecretAsianMan replied to BigJKO's topic in Movies & Television
I don't really get people's reactions to the trailer. I think it looks like a dumb movie, but I'm confused by the "this isn't Star Trek" talk. Star Trek hasn't been classic Star Trek for the last two movies. Why was this one supposed to be any different? It's pretty much exactly what I was expecting to see. If people were thinking it was going to be like the Star Trek of yore and wax philosophic about the human condition, they clearly haven't been paying attention to the last few films, even before the reboot. -
I've seen those water jugs get delivered where I work but where they end up I have no idea because I've yet to see an actual water cooler around. All the water fountains here have filters attached to them which are changed fairly regularly and dispense nice, cold water.

When young Kirk steals the car and gets chased by the police. Also I vote we keep talk of Star Trek to the other thread

Damn it, but computers have become really complicated
SecretAsianMan replied to Erkki's topic in Idle Banter
I've run with gaming laptops in the past. I'm currently using a PC that I didn't build because I reached the point where I was tired of doing it myself. I plan to upgrade it as time goes on but for the initial build I wanted it taken care of for me. I really hate the notion that a gaming PC has to be DIY or you're not a "true" gamer. -

Cilantro is that for me. I don't know that it tastes like soap, all I know is I can't stand it.- 1367 replies

Idle Weekend December 11, 2015: TGIF, Finally
SecretAsianMan replied to Chris's topic in Idle Weekend Episodes
Yay Idle Weekend, great cast, etc. etc. Hearing Danielle talk about playing The Walking Dead when she was in a depressed mood was really interesting to me because when that game was out I was also going through a really rough time and feeling generally depressed about life. But unlike her I specifically avoided playing it because I was afraid of being bummed out even further. I instead went for the numbing effect and played games that didn't require any kind of real thought (mostly TF2). It was a coping mechanism of sorts and it worked for me at the time. I don't particularly enjoy bleak worlds and the thought of spending so much time in one, especially one so narratively driven, was something I just didn't have the energy or will for. What was especially upsetting is that deep down inside I did want to play it but the timing was just the worst. I still haven't played it but now I have no excuse other than I'm lazy and just haven't gotten around to it. -
I think that depends on how easy it will be to "solve" the game. Things can go from really well to really screwed in an instant. But if a setup is found that's going to work almost every time no matter what the objectives are then yeah the challenge will be gone. Right now I'm having fun playing on lower difficulty levels than I probably should be while testing out various strat configurations. I will eventually wade back into the higher difficulty levels once I figure out my own setup.

I'm on most nights around 6 or 7 EST.

I got myself the HAV. Only 2 more left to go for me.
-
Did you figure out why it didn't record your voice audio?
-
I would love to do a higher level mission with some people who aren't going to be complete* assholes. Right now I'm missing the HAV, the Tesla tower, and some offensive strat I can't remember. Getting those would be excellent. *notice how I used the qualifier "complete", some level of assholery is expected

Besides what SBM said about the lack of consideration, I'm mostly bothered because the times I notice it most are when I look at the microwave for the current time but instead I see "00:17". Also a lot of microwaves will incessantly beep at you telling you that the cycle paused. The person who just walked away won't hear it but that doesn't mean I can't!

It reminds me of when we robbed banks in Payday. If you stealth it properly, then you're just sitting around waiting for a drill to finish with nothing to do. If you screw it up, you're probably not finishing the mission. They're each satisfying in their own way but one definitely gives a bigger rush than the other.

To address Bjorn's point, they do have a different feel than a normal taco. It's like breaking a normal hard shell in half. It's not entirely the same but it's a decent compromise between function and taste. There are also soft tortilla boats that serve a similar purpose, but they're basically just pita pockets.- 1367 replies

Those dogs are hard to deal with solo. While I think it's too underpowered to be useful on a regular basis, the assault drone helps a bit when playing alone because you at least have something to sort of watch your back. I did a couple sample runs myself and the motorcycle is less useful than I was hoping for just getting around quickly. That thing is basically worthless beyond comedic value.

Last week U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced that women will now be allowed to serve in all combat positions. Previously a number of positions were unavailable to women but now they can They will be subject to the same rigors and standards as men in those positions. One thing that hasn't been decided yet is should the draft be reactivated, would women also be required to register (the current answer is no).

One of the DLC items sort of alleviates this. It's a UAV that expands the radar (which seems useless to me since you have to stop to look at the map). If you upgrade it enough it also shows the locations of samples. My understanding is that once you have most of the equipment unlocked, the game becomes about sample runs to grind for research points. I think some players will even fail missions on purpose to end the level faster (ie they'll kill all the survivors themselves or purposefully destroy the thing they're supposed to protect).

Idle Thumbs 239: Trash Can Sally
SecretAsianMan replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I just remembered that after the Brute Squad fell apart a second group formed from the remnants and we called ourselves the Super Ultra Buddy Squad (SUBS). -
I don't know that I'd call it regular. I never have more than one cup a day (unless I'm working a particularly long day) and I dislike coffee enough that I'd never drink it beyond needing caffeine. I don't drink it every day, just the mornings that I feel particularly tired. Those mornings are becoming more and more frequent though. I do at least rinse out with water. What bothers me about the microwave thing is that it's completely inconsiderate of the person after you. It's especially bad if there's people standing around waiting and you just take your food and walk away. Why don't you just spit in my face while you're at it! Putting things on the chair doesn't bother me though. It's standard practice around here. Makes sure they see it.

I too am a lady. In hindsight, paying for individual packs is probably wiser since a lot of them I'm finding to not be very useful. That said though, I'm more than happy with what I paid for.

That I'll agree to.
