Shh! That's a secret.
-
I loved Bastion. I still listen to the soundtrack from time to time. Really excited for Transistor. They're supposed to be showing some stuff off at PAX East later this week. I'm definitely going to check it out. And the Supergiant booth is right next to the Double Fine booth.
-
Argo and I seemed to be thinking around 6, so I'm going to say that unless someone has an objection. I'll probably be around the DF booth before then though.
-
Good point. According to the PAX site, the expo hall closes at 6. So I guess the main entrance is a better meeting place. We should still kidnap Chris though.
-
"Enforcers" are what they call the army of volunteers that makes PAX (and many other PA related things) possible. Although I think they get minimum wage now. I'm also fine with meeting at the DF booth. Maybe we can kidnap Chris while we're there.
-
I'd be up for that. I've never actually been to the board games part of PAX before. Almost all of the people I know at PAX are enforcers, so they never have time to do anything.

Idle Thumbs 98: Happy Dishonored Return of Nick Breckon
SecretAsianMan replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Hmm, I'm going to have to watch the Saturday morning streams again. Maybe I can spot the puppeteer strings. -
I'll be wearing Idle Thumbs stuff too. Most of the panels I'm interested in are on Saturday or Sunday, so Friday is pretty open for me. 6 sounds good to me, but I'm willing to push that back as well.
-
PAX is only a few days away. Anyone want to attempt to plan a meetup? I was thinking we could try meeting somewhere on Friday night and then wander aimlessly until we find a place willing to put up with us.
-
I am in the exact same boat. There are stupid things I want to try, but I'm not sure I want spend $60 on something I suspect I won't play past the initial messing around. Convince me Thumbs!

I would think in the case of vertical SHMUPs it's more just a matter of what feels right. Since a ton of SHMUPs tend to involve flying in some way, going up just seems "correct", even if it doesn't actually relate to altitude at all. Going down seems like it conveys a sense of falling rather than flying.

Last ones, I swear: "World's Worst Drivers", "Homeless Dad"/"Junk" (they both go to the same episode), "Scandalmakers".
-
Found some more: "Boyfights", "Wrench", "Caged Wisdom", "Les Cousins Dangereux", and "El Amor Prohibido". I never realized how many fake shows there were on Arrested Development.
-
There was a comment in the Metal Gear Rising: Revengence thread about how you can scan people's hands for chips then cut them off and I wanted to post a clip from Demolition Man but I couldn't find an appropriate one.
-
Apparently there are more. Try searching for "Blue" and then click on the blue paint/handprint. Also, try watching "Girls with Low Self Esteem", "Families with Low Self Esteem", "Franklin Comes Alive", and "Mock Trial with J. Reinhold". There are probably more but those are the ones I've found so far.

I don't know if this is a known thing and I've just been missing it for a while, but I was watching some Arrested Development and I noticed that instead of the usual star ratings, they were bananas. If you click on them, it takes you to a episode from the show and jumps to a part about the banana stand. Is this some subtle promo for the new episodes?

Idle Thumbs 97: The Dash Rendar Synergy
SecretAsianMan replied to Chris's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
My random thoughts that have no merit or bearing on anything. Shadows of the Empire was the first and only Star Wars book I've ever read. It almost got me to start reading other ones, but I never got around to it. I had one of those giant clear plastic turbo controllers for the N64 when I was a kid and Shadows was the only game I ever used it on. Because the blaster didn't have an ammo count and instead just did a percent of damage based on the last time you fired it, I basically had a constant stream of lasers coming out of my gun. They were really weak, but it shot so many so fast that I ended up destroying everything in seconds. Also I had no idea there was an ending in which Dash survives. That bums me out. The video game term that always sticks out in my mind as weird is "spawn". In most games, spawn usually means a character just pops out of thin air or refers to the place that happens. When I think of it in the biological sense, I usually envision gross slimy messes. So I sympathize with Sean that game words are disgusting. There was something else but I'm sick and too tired to try and remember it. -
I think I saw a glimpse of it in the preview for the second episode, but Super Princess Peach for the DS actually has Peach as the protagonist who must rescue Toad, Luigi, and Mario from Bowser.

Which Video Game Boss would make the best Actual Boss?
SecretAsianMan replied to Berzee's topic in Video Gaming
Dr. Wily from Megaman because then I'D BE A ROBOT (MASTER)! -
I just want say that I'm glad we're discussing this on International Women's Day (thanks Google homepage)

I didn't fund the Kickstarter so I am rather ignorant of the details. How many videos was it supposed to fund? I would imagine that if her original goal was to only do a few and she got 25x her asking amount, then she would spend the surplus on making more rather than making the few just look better.

If I remember correctly, she said Zelda becomes the Damsel in Distress when she transforms into her stereotypical female form (from Shiek/Tetra to the Princess) and is captured. Up until that point, she isn't the Damsel in Distress. Not all women are damsels, but (by defintion) all damsels are women.
-
I would love to have a meetup, even if it's only among readers and none of the Thumbs can make it. I've never been to PAX East before and I don't know the area, does anyone know a good spot to hang out?
-
Don't forget that for a large portion of the Super Mario RPG Peach is still a damsel in distress who requires Mario to rescue her before she becomes playable. And I think she didn't include the RPG because it isn't part of the "core" Mario games (ie the platforming ones). Although now that I think about it, she did mention the sports spinoffs so I guess I don't know what the hell I'm saying. Maybe it'll show up in the counter examples. I'll also agree that a lot of the information isn't new or revolutionary, but I don't think that makes it meaningless. Sometimes repitition is the only way to get a point across. The more voices there are talking about a topic, the more discussion there will be on it. As for the presentation, I'd concede that it's not super interesting but I actually kind of like that. Too many videos try to present their information with flashy graphics or loud music or some other bs thing and I end up not getting the point or having to watch it again because of all the stuff between me and the message. I appreciate videos that are both amusing and informative, but sometimes I like it when things are straighforward. Also those are some big dangly hoop earings. And damsel ball still cracks me up.
