The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS
SecretAsianMan replied to Henroid's topic in Video Gaming
I admit my initial reaction was a bit of a knee-jerk defensive one along the lines of "Nintendo bad, boo". I still stand by my statement that LPs have done more to persuade me to buy a game than any advertisement has, but I completely agree that current copyright law is terrible and can understand Nintendo wanting to protect its property. I feel like there should be a better way to let people show how fun it is to play a game without either party saying "give me the monies" but I don't know what that way is. -
And at least one Asian (though I don't have a beard).

There were a lot of little things in Super Metroid that I love. Those creatures that show you how to wall jump and shinespark, the wrecked ship, moonwalking, the one miniboss who tries to attack you when he's nothing but bones, the weird plant miniboss, the mini-Kraid and the mysterious corpse outside Kraid's lair, the . I could go on for a while. Good times.

Though it was never released, maybe you could bring up Six Days in Fallujah as an example, perhaps of how not to tell a story.

Idle Thumbs 106: Imagine the Man
SecretAsianMan replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
It is on sale right now at Amazon -
I was watching Die Hard last night and I was reminded that McClane's cop pal Al is also Carl Winslow from Family Matters. I told myself they were in fact the same character and the events of Die Hard are the reason he moved to Chicago in Family Matters. I kept expecting Urkel to show up as a terrorist, or at least Zeusthecat.

That is true to an extent, but the real focus on most LPs isn't the game itself but rather the experience of playing the game and the commentary of the person/people playing the game. It's the same reason the Saturday Streams are great. Not because we can watch someone build a rocket to send Kerbals to the Mun, but because we can watch Nick realize he has no fuel while Chris serenades us with Space Asshole. -

I don't remember the McGriddle being marketed as "Bizarre. But Yummy." but that seems hilarious to me now. Also that homepage is gross. -
I recently got a new pair of shoes and I've decided to tie/untie them each time I put them on/take them off. I kept my last pair tied all the time and just shoved my feet into them, which wore them out. I'm glad I took the time to learn this knot

I just lost the game.

The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS

The problem in this case isn't so much that LPs violate copyright so much as Nintendo wants the money. Basically, what they're doing is taking all the revenue generated by ads during the videos, and saying "we want it because we made the game" instead of letting that money go to the people who made the video. Obviously, they're legally allowed to do so (since they are) but money generated by ads is nothing compared to the revenue generated by hardware/game sales. Really, a lot of LPs function as free advertisement since the people making the videos don't claim to have made or own the games and are usually just showing how much fun it is. I was convinced to buy Minecraft because of LPs. -

I really don't understand the point of this move, but Nintendo is claiming ownership of YouTube videos that contain gameplay of their games, specifically Let's Plays. It pretty much gains them nothing and takes away from the people who create such videos. I've watched a few LPs of some WiiU games, and those have made me want a WiiU more than any Nintendo ad I've ever seen. -
Using modern technology to help you with games.

My cousin once had a guide for Street Fighter II from Taiwan. It broke down every single character and had a screenshot of them doing EVERY move in the game, from special moves to standing still and punching. I remember it being really complicated and amazing to my 10-year-old self. -
I actually went through several versions of that post trying to figure out a way to not confuse which one I am. Apparently I failed. I'm the Asian dude sitting on Chris' left hand side. My thumbs are up (it was actually my idea).

Idle Thumbs 106: Imagine the Man

The question about Dark Souls and being able to beat the game almost whenever you want makes me think of Chrono Trigger. It's not quite the same because there is a mostly linear story but after a certain point you can fight the final boss whenever you want. Also, the Kotaku AO sexy women discussion brought this to mind. -

I second this, especially the part about the polos. Also, can I hire Jake to come perform at my birthday party as Big Bird? -
I'm not creeped out per say, I just genuinely have no idea how to respond. Ok, maybe I'm a little creeped out, but in a highly complemenatry way.

Um... thanks?

Man I used to love playing pool. The closest I've ever been to playing in a league was during college I played intramural pool. I had a friend who played APA pool. I kept meaning to see if there's an APA league around me but I always forgot. Thanks for the reminder Zeus!

One of my friends liked to play as Pikachu and would spam the move where you call down lightning from above. One on one it was no big deal to avoid, but in the midst of a battle with 3 others it was really annoying to be beating up someone else and then have a bolt of lightning shoved up your ass. I derived entirely too much pleasure from hearing that little electric rat squeal when I smashed him off the screen.

I have similar memories, except substitute Pokemon Stadium for Mario Party and Smash Bros.

I agree with the idea that people should be able to enjoy what they want, but I've also found that by being able to trade stuff, there will become a market for this kind of thing, which will then turn into random people bugging me for stuff or constantly trying to sell me things. This already happens to me with TF2. That's relatively easy to ignore because it only happens when I play TF2, but if this kind of trading grows in scale and is connected to Steam rather than a specific game, I can already imagine the spam.

I went to the Gearbox panel during PAX East and I have a free code for the new Borderlands 2 DLC character Krieg which comes out today. I THINK it works on any platform but I'll have to double check when I get home. PM if you want it. Edit: The code has been claimed.

I'm more interested to see what Molyneux's definition of life changing is given his previous history of claims. Also, Wikipedia has a list of all the cube layers and as of today we seem to be down to the final 20.
