  1. Favorite Game Of All Time

Because I'm too lazy to edit my other post. Also, I wanted to say F-GOAT. F-GOAT TF2 (see earlier post for explaination) Honorable Mentions Freespace 2 - It's like watching a space opera, only you're playing it. Terranigma (SNES) - It's unique and interesting. Also awesome music. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - My personal favorite Zelda game. Half-life 2 - Aside from the messiah complex, it's awesome. Ok, I picked 4 honorable mentions. Sue me.
  2. Favorite Game Of All Time

But we already have a great example to follow: The Idle Thumbs GOTYs. Except this thread is about the game of your lifetime instead of just one year. Maybe for the sake of brevity only write a lengthy post about the top game and just list a few honorable mentions/runners up.
  3. No Ambitions, any advice?

I understand how you feel. I started college wanting to make games too, but I ended up somewhere else. Due to other factors in my life, I'm sort of stuck where I am but I still have a desire to make games. I have several notebooks filled with ideas. My advice would also probably be school if you can afford it, and keep yourself open to anything. You may find something you really enjoy and want to do that you may not have found otherwise. Just because you start going to school and studying one thing doesn't meant that you have to keep doing it.
  4. I Had A Random Thought...

There's a certain word in Chinese that sounds like a certain word that starts with "N" which I won't say here but is prolific among annoying 13 year olds on teh internets. The Chinese word literally means "that" as in "Look at that thing over there". Whenever I say it out loud I'm always afraid someone will overhear and misinterpret what I'm saying. It hasn't happened yet as far as I know, but I'm convinced it will someday.
  5. Idle Thumbs 108: A Premium Price

Agreed. Maybe I could have downloaded it and listened to it at work if it had come out earlier. Now I have to wait til tomorrow. How else am I supposed to pass the time? By doing my job?
  6. Life

My work schedule for the next week or so has changed. I'm basically the only one here for my shift. I have a very strong urge to rearrange all the cubicle walls to form a giant maze.
  7. Favorite Game Of All Time

I want to be able to say some obscure indie game no one has played or some old school game everyone has forgotten about, but in the end I have to be the guy who says Team Fortress 2. I don't care about hats in the least. I don't pay any attention to the competitive side. I haven't tried a very many mods or custom maps. I just really enjoy playing the game. The first online multiplayer game I ever got into was Team Fortress Classic. I had so much fun playing after school. It was the game I would run out of the bus and into my house to play. At one point, I even joined a "clan" but we never amounted to anything and quickly broke up. I waited so long for TF2 and when it finally came, I was beyond excited. I didn't have a gaming PC at the time, so I played it on the 360 (via the Orange Box, which is probably one of the best gaming packages ever). I met a lot of people playing everyday and we formed another "clan". That scene died out when it became apparent that the Xbox version would never receive the updates the PC version had, but I'm still friends with several of those people today. I've even met some of them in real life. One of them lives in Seattle and during a PAX took me to visit Valve. But that's a story for another day. I love that it's a team game and not just about killing each other (although there are modes for that). I love that each class plays completely different from the others. I love that it's not serious and is completely silly. I love that it's just as fun to play strategically as it is to goof around. I love that the different weapons are not just reskins or simply better versions but have interesting benefits/penalties. I love the strictly co-op MvM mode. I love pushing the cart. I love capturing points. I love that final push in the last few seconds that means the difference between victory or defeat. It's not a perfect game by any means and there are plenty of things that annoy me. But it's the one I always come back to on a regular basis because it's just FUN.
  8. I Had A Random Thought...

I have a very poor sense of the passage of time. I'm constantly looking at my watch, clocks, my phone, my computer, etc. If you ask me to tell you when an hour has passed and I don't have some sort of device to keep time, you'll get anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours before I tell you. That said, my unconscious self is really good at it. Everyday, without fail, I wake up 2-5 minutes before my alarm goes off. It drives me nuts because it's not enough time to go back to sleep, but it's also enough that I don't want to get up yet. I've even tried setting an alarm and not looking at a clock for a couple hours (or what I assume is a couple hours) before going to sleep and I still wake up.
  9. General Video Game Deals Thread

Taken out of context, this makes for a weird review.
  10. Video Games With Dynamic Music

Er, door hinge? I love that song. I remember the first time I played Curse, I recognized the phrase that would end the song but I purposely picked it last to hear the rest of the lyrics. Then I loaded my last save and listened to it again.
  11. Steam Trading Card

Ok, I took 30 seconds and now I have cards. Yay or whatever. I will say I am amused by looking at the graphs for the average price of various cards. Economics in action.
  12. Movie/TV recommendations

That review does a pretty good job of summing up how I feel about it. I'm glad they didn't cop out and fill it with call backs (although the fanboy in me is a little disappointed there weren't more). And as disparaging as I am about how it turned out, I am glad they tried something new. Also I can't get that stupid "Getaway" song out of my head. It's driving me crazy.
  13. Movie/TV recommendations

I completely agree about everything being meaner. I never really used to hate any of the characters because the perspective would switch often enough that I didn't have time to become annoyed by any of them. But having an entire episode focus on one person makes me not like them by the end. I also had a really hard time figuring out what was going on. I'm used to the way the show constantly jumped around, but even then everything would be moving forward and each individual episode's main plot is mostly wrapped up at the end with some progress made towards the overall plot. Now it keeps going back in time when it switches characters and I have no sense of the timeline. For me, it wasn't so much that it got better around episode 5, but more that I got used to it and thought "well, I guess this is just how it is". Taken on their own, they're not bad, but when you compare them to the original run, they don't really hold up. I can't say I'm surprised but still somewhat disappointed.

  15. I Had A Random Thought...

The fact that they keep making these movies makes me think this already happened.
  16. Life

I have nothing against people who like to smoke pretty much anything, but I have no desire of my own to do it. I've been offered it several times, but I just politely decline and that's the end of it. I'm also not a big drinker. I don't think any of it is bad, evil, or morally wrong, I just don't like it. I am in favor of the legalization though. Legalize it and tax the shit out of it, just like they do for the other stuff.
  17. Nextbox 1080: The Reckoning

So Polygon is reporting the XBone won't require a fee for used games and that regular games will require periodic authentication checks. The game discs will contain some encryption code that will authorize the machine it's installed on to play it. If you give a buddy your disc, then when he installs it on his system your system will be deauthenticated and he'll now own it. There also won't be a fee for activating used games. Here's Larry Hyrb's official statement:
  18. Nextbox 1080: The Reckoning

There is something to be said for having a setup like Zeus instead of a screenshot of your Steam list or whatever.
  19. Nextbox 1080: The Reckoning

I'm constantly torn between my sympathy for developers and my sympathy for consumers. When I was in college, I couldn't afford to buy a new game all the time so I had a Gamefly membership. It let me play a ton of games while costing significantly less than the total cost of all those games. I got rid of it when I started working and could afford to buy things myself. But even when I used Gamefly, I wondered if I was hurting developers since they essentially only sold a few copies of the game and yet many times that number were playing it. So even when I had Gamefly I would still buy the games I really felt were worth the money. I want developers to get the money they deserve, but I also want people to be able to play games and I know not everyone can afford to buy new games all the time. I've seen speculation that restricting the used game market could lead to lower prices for new games because it would mean more copies are sold without fear of losing money to resales.
  20. Life

I don't wanna grow up. I'm a Toys 'R Us kid. Except Toys 'R Us sucks now, or I assume it does, haven't set foot in one in at least a decade.
  21. Life

I still don't have an answer to the question "What do you want to be when you grow up".
  22. Steam Trading Card

Maybe it could have cards that drop just by playing. And then you could trade them with other people. And some of them would be super rare and you could only get a full set by trading or buying them.
  23. Steam Trading Card

I don't like McDonald's advertising and I don't think anyone should like their food. So there. But actually, I agree with Zeus. People can like it or hate it all they want. Either way, it doesn't make me any less concerned that it could turn into a horrible thing (to me).
  24. Idle Thumbs 107: GIANTBOMB.COM

I like both Idle Thumbs and Giantbomb, but I prefer them as separate entities. The occasional guest spot is ok with me though. Also, I thought this warranted reposting here from the Nextbox 1080 thread. Insert Jake explosion sound effects.
  25. Cartoons!

The second season of YJ does get pretty heavy with the drama. I feel like the series had potential, but it'll never be realized because they had to make room for yet another Batman cartoon. I like Batman too but enough already. Rewatched a few episodes of Gargoyles last night. Man that show was good.
