  1. Life

Geez. Was there any reason for the assault or was it simply a random crime? Either way, I wish you the best.
  2. Getting a phone

I have a Nexus 4 and I love it. It's sleek, fast, and the price can't be beat. The biggest drawbacks are battery life, non-removable battery, no LTE support, and no SD card slot. Battery life tends to be a problem across the board for Android phones. You'll maybe get a day's use out of it with moderate usage. The lack of SD card slot is a problem for some, but I have the 32GB model and I've never found storage to be an issue, although I don't keep any music on there and instead use cloud services. Perhaps the best part about the Nexus 4 is it runs stock Android, which means less bloat compared to third party UIs. The Galaxy 4 is also probably a good choice. I had a Galaxy S2 before I got a Nexus and that was a great phone. I'd also consider the HTC One (not to be confused with the Xbox One). Personally, if I had to choose between the Galaxy and the HTC One, I'd pick the HTC One. Both of those will come with their manufacturer's UI on it (Samsung/HTC), but if you can wait for a bit, both will be available on June 26th from the Google Play store with stock Android like the Nexus 4. Of course, they won't be as cheap as the Nexus, around $600. As for games, there are a lot of fun things, but nothing that would replace a 3DS. The real benefit is obviously when you don't have anything else with you and you want something to play. Chris has mentioned Drop7 a couple times on the cast and that's a fun one. There's stuff like Plants vs Zombies, more tower defense games than you can count, ripoffs from Gameloft, Angry Birds, and more. One thing to consider is the Humble Bundles. There have been several Android bundles and there's a nice app that you can use download all the games you've purchased from any bundle. I'm sure there will be more Android bundles in the future.
  3. Software

Yeah, that thread sort of got away from software, which is what I wanted to focus on.
  4. Software

So I'll get things started with 2. First is one I've been using for a while. Ninite Windows/Linux Free I love Ninite. It's an installer/updater. You can pick from a pretty big list of free useful software and download an installer. The installer will automatically install all the software you chose without presenting you with any dialog boxes. It automatically declines things like search bars or other ad stuff. And if you run the same installer again, it will update any software that you already have installed to the current version, even if you didn't use Ninite to install it in the first place. I usually run it once a week. As much as I love it, there are a few things I don't recommend updating with Ninte. Steam does a good job of updating itself, as do most of the things in the Security category. There is a pro version that runs on a subscription model and has more features, but they're not really necessary. This one I've just started using but I really like it. Overwolf Windows (Mac version in the works) Free Overwolf is kind of like the Steam overlay, only better. It has an IM widget that works with Skype, Steam, Teamspeak, Facebook, etc. There's a built in video recorder and screen capture. It also has links to things like gmail and youtube, although they basically just open in a browser window. There's also an appstore with free apps like a Dota and LoL timer, WoW talent calculator, a TF2 crafting advisor, etc. There aren't a ton of apps at the moment, but hopefully more will be added.

It's all women coming out of the shower with towels, but then they drop the towel and the camera stays on the women. None of that sweet towel on towel action. Note: No actual search for towel porn was performed. Now excuse me while I clear my browser history.
  6. I Had A Random Thought...

Doing things like putting a towel over the monitor would probably tempt me even more because it would be a constant reminder of the forbidden pleasure that hides beneath. It's like the old "don't think about elephants" thing. Maybe it would even get me into towel porn. That exists right?
  7. Double Fine - Kickstarter - MASSIVE CHALICE

Say Chris, are you at all involved with this? Not that it will influence my decision to back it...
  8. Weird Medical Shit

I once again dropped a cup in my kitchen. Thankfully, it was plastic this time and didn't shatter into shrapnel when it hit the ground. It just landed on my foot and hurt like hell.
  9. Idle Thumbs 108: A Premium Price

I will totally admit to not being a big Sean fan when he first came on the podcast. Mostly because he was the new guy and sort of had the bad timing of coming in when the podcast was winding down before the KS. Then I met him in person and it turned out he was an AWESOME DUDE. It made me give the post-KS casts another listen, this time with a more open mind. Now I feel like an ass for ever doubting him. He has lifted my spirits on more than one occasion. So ignore the haters Sean, and keep being a cool guy. Oh, and Chris, Jake, Steve, and Nick are cool guys too.

I just realized I pronounce the word "perfect" in different ways, depending on how I use it. If something "is perfect", I say it one way. If it's "to perfect", I say it another way. I also do the same with "envelope", as in "an envelope" and "to envelope". English is a weird language.
  12. Unity

I've attended several PAX panels that were geared toward making games and both Unity and Game Maker are consistently recommended starting places. I've had both on my computer for a long time and have yet to do anything with either one, so I sadly have no first hand advice.
  13. I think part of it is also the nature of the console versus the PC. When I turn on my Xbox or PS3 or Wii or whatever, I usually do it with the intention of playing a specific game (or maybe Netflix). And that's all I'm doing with it. Even in the case of downloadable games, I still usually know what I want to play before I turn it on. That may change with the PS4 and Xbone. In the case of a computer, I end up doing a lot of other things either before or after playing, like checking my email, browsing the web, messing up Wikipedia, posting on forums, etc. Sometimes playing a game is almost incidental. I'm already at my computer, might as well play something.
  14. Weird Medical Shit

Heh, actually that thought occurred to me as I was posting. "Oh man I just cut myself up bad! I have to go post this on the Idle Forums quick!"
  15. Weird Medical Shit

I just dropped a glass in my kitchen and now my hand and foot are a bloody mess. And that's not a euphemism.
  16. I probably have a similar ratio of games owned to games actually played as most, but that's only on Steam. I've played every console game I own to completion, with a few exceptions and those I stopped pretty close to the end. I think it's because in the case of a console game, I felt I owed it to myself to play it to the end because it took some amount of effort to get, either ordering it through Amazon, buying it in a store, or even going through Microsoft's annoying money->points system. In the case of Steam, I see it, I buy it, and I suddenly have it. It's absurdly easy and extremely dangerous.

I'm fairly proud of the way I make steak. I think I can make a few pretty tasty dishes, but steak is the one I think I do best. And I do occasionally make a sauce for it and am not offended if someone asks for it. Ok, maybe a little.
  18. Movie/TV recommendations

Alien was the source of a truly terrifying series of nightmares when I was a child. Watching it while home alone with all the lights off was probably not the best idea, and it has resulted in me not being a fan of the series, though I can appreciate what others see in it.
  19. Double Fine - Kickstarter - MASSIVE CHALICE

At this point in time, I agree with you. Broken Age isn't out yet and I totally understand them wanting to have something else in the works. Hopefully Broken Age and maybe even Massive Chalice will do well enough to allow them to move forward on other things without resorting to KS, but DF has to be careful. Broken Age was basically sold on faith in Tim and DF, but they can't depend on that working in the future if the game turns out poorly. As for Massive Chalice itself, I wasn't completely sold on the idea, but the pitch itself has swayed me somewhat. I'll probably end up backing, but at a lower level than I did with Broken Age.
  20. Idle Thumbs 108: A Premium Price

After reading this, my mind created a scenario where Chris and Jake created a new potato themed podcast called "Potato Today", complete with a spuds@idlethumbs.net email.
  21. I Had A Random Thought...

If the customer wants sauce to make the steak taste better, then our hopefully hypothetical arrogant chef would probably say they lack the refined taste needed to appreciate the steak correctly. If the customer wants it because they think the steak was cooked poorly, the chef would probably argue that it was in fact cooked correctly and the customer is again an unrefined heathen. In either case, the chef is insulted, throws down his hat, stomps on it, kicks the customer out, then goes out and gets a TV show.
  22. Favorite Game Of All Time

I'm not familiar with Diaspora. To be fair, Freespace and Tie Fighter are my only ventures into that genre, but Freespace impressed me enough that I rank it as one of my favorite games despite not really liking the genre. It's also the only game on my list that I still have a physical copy of.
  23. I Had A Random Thought...

In the case of the sauce, some chefs see it as an insult. It's like you're saying "You cooked the steak poorly so I want some sauce to cover up the bad flavor". That's probably not what most people mean, but to the chef it shouldn't need a sauce if it was done "right".
  24. I Had A Random Thought...

The worst part is that I tend to repeat it a lot when I can't think of what I'm trying to say. It's the equivalent of saying "um" a lot in English, except in my case I'm afraid it will lead to getting my ass beat.
  25. Idle Thumbs 108: A Premium Price

I do this all the time as well. The worst is when the realization comes in the middle of a discussion about a game and the name of the game is mentioned once and never again. I then rewind to find out what game they're talking about, only to forget again 10 minutes later.
