  1. I Had A Random Thought...

I just learned there used to be a landfill in New York called Fresh Kills Landfill. It's in the process of being turned into a park to be named Freshkills Park. I do not want to visit this park. (And yes, I'm aware that the word Kill in this case derives from old Dutch meaning stream, brook, or channel but still)
  2. It's Halloween!

    baBoo!! Happy Halloween
  3. I Had A Random Thought...

I actually read a lot of Great Illustrated Classics. My favorite was The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo.
  4. Life

I'm glad Sewaddle arrived safely Teg.
  5. I Had A Random Thought...

Oh man Hatchet. That brings me back. I actually read The River first because someone gave me that as a gift. I later read Hatchet. No worries, I knew you were kidding. My comment was meant to be a joke but became a serious thing.
  6. Spelunky!

Said everyone who has ever played Spelunky. You're probably still better than me (I'm so bad at the original that Nick's early runs look good compared to mine).
  7. Pokémon X and Y

As someone who had never played a Pokemon game before X/Y, this is what all that is like to me
  8. I Had A Random Thought...

I read a bunch of Animorphs as well, but I never finished the series. I remember reading several of the Goosebumps books and far too many choose-your-own-adventure books. I read a Super Mario based one of those a bunch of times.
  9. I Had A Random Thought...

I was an Encyclopedia Brown fan. I also read a lot of the Boxcar Childen books even though I didn't like them. I think I did it so that I could get a free pizza from Pizza Hut. Edit: Huh, I guess the Book It program still exists.
  10. I Had A Random Thought...

My bad. I may have accidentally started all this with my dumb half a joke comment. This discusson has helped me discover my secret forum power: the ability to turn a thread into an arguement with what I think is an innocuous post. This is like my third one. I've gotta stop this.
  11. I Had A Random Thought...

I really hope you're kidding here. If you're not PLEASE don't do it on my account. If you want to call me SAM because it's easier (which many people do) that's fine, but don't do it because you're afraid of upsetting me or someone else (unless they actually are upset by the name SecretAsianMan in which case it's my problem and not yours). Like I said before, it takes a lot to offend me and nothing that's been said so far I have found offensive. I'll say one more thing and then leave you alone. I agree with you that intent is important. And I totally believe you have no malicious intent. But intent and outcome don't always match. The intent of the song "Yankee Doodle" was to insult the American colonials, but now it's considered a patriotic song. I believe your intent was not to make a statement that could upset someone, but that doesn't mean it couldn't. I think you realize this though so I'm not going to keep repeating this arguement.
  12. I Had A Random Thought...

I think there has to be more to it than that though. Without the proper understanding, you're bound to repeat the same mistake. Maybe you won't say the exact same words but something with the same meaning or possibly even worse. If it were as simple as just saying it was offensive, then no one could say anything ever.
  13. Life

I handed in the keys to my apartment today. I am officially out of there and totally moved into my house now.
  14. I Had A Random Thought...

Boy this got really complicated. Lets see if I can do this without a million quote blocks. As far as what's appropriate and what's not, I don't think there's ever going to be a clear, universal answer to that (at least until humanity becomes a hive mind and we all share the same thought). Appropriateness is determined by an individual (or group of usually like minded individuals), which is further determined by background, mindset, beliefs, etc. There are times I wonder if my handle is inappropriate, despite the fact that I am Asian and I came up with the name myself. Who am I to say what is and isn't offensive to someone? Personally, it takes a lot to offend me but that's just me. To the point about physical attraction versus emotions, I agree that they are separate, or rather that they should be. But human beings aren't purely rational creatures so they're going to get mixed up. Maybe not hate in everyone's case, but there are certainly people who aren't going to be able to separate physical and emotional attraction. In the thought department, I tend to draw the line at action. I've met plenty of people in my life I didn't like (not because of race or anything, they were just asshats). I've thought about punching them. A lot. I've never punched a person in my life, at least not in a violent manner. I've had other thoughts that I'm certain some people wouldn't like. And I know those thoughts for what they are. But I've never acted on them because I recognize what the consequences of those actions would be. Are they immoral thoughts? Maybe, it depends on your morals. Do I think they're immoral? Perhaps a few, but that's why I don't act on them. I don't being a good person means you can never think bad things. Just don't do them.
  15. Movie/TV recommendations

I felt pretty much the same way, they're not great but not terrible either. As a sort of tangent to Stargate, if you liked David Hewlett (McKay), then you might want to see A Dog's Breakfast. It's a movie he made himself with the help of some Stargate people. It has his sister Kate Hewlett (Jeannie), Paul McGillion (Beckett), Chris Judge (Teal'c), and Rachel Luttrell (Teyla). It's a dark, goofy comedy that's kind of fun and has some Stargate easter eggs in it (besides the cast). And as an extra fun fact about that movie, he used it to pitch an idea for a show called StarCrossed. It was a sitcom about the actors on a sci-fi TV show. Syfy (or Sci-Fi as it was called at the time) considered it but never picked it up as a series.
  16. Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies

I like his new look too, but I'll be extremely dissapointed if I don't get a good reason for that jacket's existance later in the game.
  17. Plants vs Zombies 2: It's About Time

So PvZ2 came to Android a few days ago. I'm not very far into it but I have to say I'm not really bothered by it as much as I thought I would be. While most of the F2P complaints people have are true, I'm not actually annoyed by them so far. Yes, there are plants locked behind a pay wall, but playing without them has actually added variety to my strategy since I'm forced to compensate for their loss. And none of them seem to be the vital ones so I'm not really at a huge disadvantage. The grinding is also there to a degree but really it's just stuff I probably would have done anyway. After I completed the main game in PvZ, I went through it a few more times with some self imposed challenges just to make it more interesting. The only difference between then and now is that it's actually part of the game. So far I don't think it's a quite as bad as most people made it out to be. I also very much dislike the F2P plague that's spreading across gaming, but I feel like in PvZ2 they didn't purposely cripple gameplay to make you have to pay to progress. Maybe it will turn into that later once I hit some bullshit part, but for now I'm ok with how it is.
  18. Movie/TV recommendations

Have you watched the SG1 movies yet? I'm curious to know what you think of those.
  19. Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies

I liked Apollo Justice. I thought the perceive system was pretty good compared to the other ways of getting information out of people. It also has some of my favorite characters in the series. I like Trucy the most out of all the assistants (although I haven't interacted with Athena very much yet). The animation where she bounces on her feet is adorable, as well as the young Trucy deploying Mr. Hat. She's in DD as well but I don't know how large of a role she plays.
  20. I Had A Random Thought...

That's a good way of putting it. I don't think there's anything wrong with being attracted to a certain type or physical trait (I have a thing for redheads red hair myself so I know what you mean Twig). But it is hard to make it non-reductive. Automatically finding someone attractive because they're Asian doesn't seem too far from thinking they're automatically good at math or automatically are a bad driver or automatically know martial arts or a million other sterotypes that may or may not be bullshit. It seems like a slippery slope to me. The really weird part is I've seen WAY worse in China. My cousin's wife is White and when they went to China for the first time, my parents took them around. Everywhere they went, people wanted to take their picture with her simply because she was White. Many even asked if she was famous and they called my cousin lucky because he married someone White. That was super awkward.
  21. Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies

There are also random animated cutscenes. So far each case has started with one, but there are additional scenes that have nothing to do with the case and are mostly incidental. Also, it's weird hearing them speak. I didn't play the demo for AA:DD or Professor Layton vs Pheonix Wright so it's still weird to me to hear things other than "Objection!" or "Take that!". Playing another Ace Attorney game makes me want my Steel Samurai ringtone back.
  22. I Had A Random Thought...

First let me make it clear I'm not actually offended in any way. I was sort of half joking in what I said, but Zeus kind of hit on one thing. Saying "their women" makes it seem less like people and more like things. Again, I'm not upset, just food for thought.
  23. I Had A Random Thought...

Hmm... (I know you don't ACTUALLY mean anything by it but still awkward)
  24. Cartoons!

Man I forgot about that. This means that Ned has effectively lost 2 wives. Poor stupid Flanders.
