  1. The end-of-the-generation retrospective megathread.

ODST is also my favorite Halo. Those sections as the Rookie are a really nice contrast to the rest of the series. I especially love the subtleties of how the city's AI helps you out. I also really like Firefly so the voice acting made me happy. Plus, smokey sax. Resistance 2 wasn't a very good game by itself, but I absolutely loved the 8 player co-op mode. It was easily the best part of the game and it drove me nuts that they didn't bring it back for the third game. It's a weird one off thing that I'm glad I got to enjoy while I could.

I was out looking for redstone and I managed to mine my way into a lava pool. I had found some diamond too.

    Did you beat it?

You know that thing in movies/tv shows where someone is threatening another person by pointing a gun at them, the person pointing the gun tells the other person to do something, that person hesitates, then the person with the gun emphasizes their threat by cocking the gun? When I was a kid, I always wondered why was the gun not cocked before? I know many guns use double action triggers (pulling the trigger also cocks the hammer) and that cocking the gun manually means the trigger is easier to pull, but this still bothers me and seems like a thing the average movie viewer isn't likely to know. Plus, in the case of single action triggers, it means you couldn't fire the gun at all before. In a way it's like threatening to run someone over, except you haven't started the car yet. On a similar note, indicating you are ready for action by pulling back the slide on a handgun or pumping a shotgun bothers me too. I want to see a round pop out because the gun was cycled.

I'm SecretAsianManz. Thanks for being a cool dude and doing all this.
  7. The end-of-the-generation retrospective megathread.

The last generation was marked by several things for me. The Open World I mean this in 2 ways. The first is open world games (or sandbox or free roaming or whatever you want to call it). I know that the idea has been around for a while, but I feel like it was much more significant in this last gen. At this point it's almost an expectation that you'll be able to go anywhere and everywhere. The other way I mean is the real world and the ways of interaction we now have. I remember when multiplayer gaming consisted of LANs or going to someone's house to play splitscreen on a console. Even though Xbox Live existed before the 360, it was much more limited than it is now. Throw in PSN and Steam and the world is connected like never before. And clearly this is moving forward with things like Twitch and Twitter integration. What's Old is New Remakes aren't new. They've been around for a long time and they're not going away, probably ever. But with the emergence of Kickstarter, old games are coming to a new generation that's never seen them before. It's still a little weird to me that I've played games older than the average age of an Xbox Live user. The increase in the indie scene has also brought back "retro" graphics. Once upon a time an NES-era game looked like shit, but now there are millions of people using blocky fists to punch blocky trees and craft blocky tools to slay blocky dragons. The Emperor's New Clothes Remember Oblivion's horse armor DLC? Remember how ridiculous it seemed at the time to pay $2 for fake clothing for your fake horse? If only we knew at the time how far it would go. I'll probably think of some more later but that's enough for now.

I don't much care for livestreams of things that are primarily one way communication, like concerts or presentations. Whether I'm watching them or not, the content will be the same so I'll do it when I have time. On the other hand, stuff like the Thumbs streams I prefer to witness live because in that case there is a chance that I can have some small amount of influence in the course of events via the chat. Those streams still are fun to watch later as well because the Thumbs generally do a good job of interacting with the camera and not just the people who are present in the chat, but this is not always the case. I do however share your attitude about putting up stuff myself. I'm not interesting enough that people will want to watch me do anything.
  9. Spelunky!

I seem to do better when I run around and leap without looking. At least until a disastrous chain of events unfolds. I've been getting the tunnels built as I encounter them so that I can learn the later environments better without having to go through the first few areas. Once I'm more comfortable with the enemies and hazards I'll do full runs from the start.

While I dislike infographics in general, here's one that includes how to parallel park. It was made in the UK so some reversal of direction may be necessary. Parking Guide Infographic
  12. Spelunky!

Thanks! Although I played the original for a while, I wasn't very good and never made it past the jungle. Glad to see those same skills (or lack thereof) transfer to the new version.
  13. Spelunky!

Thanks to a very generous person who will remain anonymous *cough*Teg*cough* I now own Spelunky. First thing I tried was the daily challenge, where upon I immediately ran into a spider and was killed by an arrow trap. Good start.

I know exactly what you mean. I was really into that community for a while. I even joined a 'clan'. That's such a weird idea to me now.

My narrative accent changes depending on my mood, what I'm playing, and how well I'm doing. I usually jump between British, Australian, bad Sean Connery impersonation, fake Russian, actual Chinese, and random gibberish.
  21. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

I think Rogue Legacy embraces death more than Spelunky does. When you die in Spelunky, you've gained nothing except perhaps some proficiency at the game and maybe some knowledge of the environment. When you die in Rogue Legacy, you gain those same things but also gold and equipment to improve your next run, none of which you can use until you die. Calling the menu a punishment seems a bit harsh because you're supposed to think about the choices you make before entering the castle again. Maybe you don't like it and that's fine, but comparing it to Spelunky's instant restart isn't a fair comparison because it was never meant to be that.
  22. Licenses That Demand A Game

For a brief second, I thought you were referring The Max from Saved By The Bell. I would make a joke about a Saved By The Bell game but I don't think I actually want that because it would end up being a dating sim or something.
  23. I Had A Random Thought...

Of all the cartoonish ways Mario can die, falling down an endless pit seems like the worst to me.
