It's probably time to talk about game genres again.
SecretAsianMan replied to Tanukitsune's topic in Video Gaming
My problem with genre definitions is that you have to add so many caveats in order to accurately describe a game, it makes the whole idea of using a genre to define a game pointless. Already many descriptions have started resorting to "X meets Y meets Z" to describe a game, which is also a shitty solution. -
I bet you guys are excited about Massive Chalice then.

That occured at least 10+ years ago.

I'm ok with the traits being random and not genetic because I fear it would lead to some weird eugenics thing where offspring with perceived deficiencies are discarded in favor of their stronger bretheren.

The first time I ever felt old was when my younger cousin asked me why his computer had an A: and C: drive but no B: drive and I knew the answer. And that back when 3.5 inch floppies still existed.

I don't think that all the people who are complaining about her being hired to due nepotism or not being a lifelong fan were doing so because she's also a woman. I think people still would have complained about it, but I agree it wouldn't have become as big a deal if it were a man.

Man, that is really disappointing. I did a little research on it myself and it seems like some people are upset because she supposedly got the job because her boyfriend works at Comcept and she was never a big MegaMan fan herself. Those arguements I can understand. But then there are some who seem to be upset because of (and I'm quoting a backer here) "her incredibly biased views towards social justice in favor of women and transgendered LGBT community members, often times criticizing anything that does not fit in to this category. I want her fired." They seem worried she's going to push her own agenda onto the game's development. All this seems incredibly stupid. Words fail me.

Did people go nuts over that? I haven't really been paying attention to Mighty No. 9 since the kickstarter ended but that seems like a ridiculous thing to flip out about.

Sounds interesting. I may start playing again to prepare.

This game got a rather large update recently. They've removed the need for keys almost entirely (now there are only 'World' keys) and the need to grind for everything. The stars are gone and progression is similar to the first PvZ game with the stages in a linear order (although there's still a map so you can revisit any of them you want). You unlock plants and upgrades as you progress, although certain plants and upgrades are still locked behind paywalls. The challenges have become requirements to pass certain levels and there's no longer multiple challenges per level. They also added the giant gargantuar zombies from the previous game. Any progress made before the update is carried over into the new system. And they've finally added a much needed fast forward button. The result of all this is a weird situation where I don't want to play the game anymore because I've beat it now and there's no motivation to replay the levels because the grinding is gone.

I probably shouldn't have read that while eating lunch because I think I'm going to be sick now.

I meant a Humble Bundle with The Room Two. I got the first one from the bundle you're talking about. I assume it's eventually going to be on Android since they put the first one on there.

I think The Room (the first one) is free for a while to celebrate the release of the second. I don't have an iDevice so I'm waiting for it to come out on Android (or a Humble Bundle).

Idle Thumbs 136: No Man's Guy
SecretAsianMan replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I listened to the first 30 minutes or so on the way into work this morning and I had a stupid grin on my face the entire time. Link to the Past is my favorite Zelda game so I'm pretty familiar with it. The overworld of Link Between Worlds is almost identical but there are some differences, such as the location of Turtle Rock (although it's considerably more turtlely now) and the depth of Zora's Domain. Of course none of that actually matters for the game. I'm also not really a fan of the art style. -
The discussion about whether they believe in God which then turned into telling jokes was great. Also this Computers are wacky.

Just saw this, reminded me of your comment.

I used to buy "gaming" keyboards but I found them to be largely unnecessary because of the types of games I play. Instead, I've been using gaming keypads, which I find suit my tastes much more. I'm currently using the Razer Nostromo I got on sale, but I plan to upgrade to something better soon.

Broken Age - Double Fine Adventure!
SecretAsianMan replied to ThunderPeel2001's topic in Video Gaming
I second Machinarium. I also liked Primordia from Wadjet Eye Games. It's got lots of traditional adventure game stuff, but also lots of logic puzzles and a dark, gritty tone. Plus the main character is voiced by Logan Cunningham, the narrator from Bastion and Transistor. I haven't played any other Wadjet Eye stuff but I plan to get the Kosher Edition of The Shivah. -

That's definitely true, but it very clearly falls into the "goofy" category which I think jmb wanted to avoid. -
I've purposely immitated a recorded voice to avoid dealing with telemarketers before.

Today was our office Christmas lunch and someone's walking around the floor playing Christmas music on an accordian.

For the most part, I still enjoy games about the same amount as I ever have. But Idle Thumbs has changed the type of games and the way I perceive those games. I never used to enjoy roguelikes before, but now games like FTL, Rogue Legacy, and Spelunky are some of my favorites. I still primarily like playing FPS games, but now I also see how much dumb shit is in them. Were it not for Idle Thumbs, I'd probably be waist deep in (Call of) Doody.

Also forgot to mention that after this year the Fallout games won't be available on GOG because the rights are going elsewhere.

The inconvenience for me is how often I have to do it. I feel like I have to eat after I do anything and those 3 seconds of chomping food add up. I also don't find farming and animal husbandry interesting.
