  1. Dreams!

I dreamt last night that I went to Valve's HQ and pitched a story idea for Half-Life 3. They really liked it and were talking about hiring me. Then in the parking lot afterwards I met Kari, Tory, and Grant from Mythbusters who were parked next to me. We started talking about doing a video game related episode of Mythbusters when my alarm clock went off and I woke up. I don't remember what the story idea for HL3 was (I think at some point the Master Chief from Halo showed up) but I do remember that the office in my dream didn't actually look like the Valve offices. It didn't concern me in the dream but in retrospect, I think may have been scammed.

The three characters are from Spelunky, Steamworld Dig, and Cave Story.
  3. Guacamelee

I agree that the game has some really weird difficulty ramps. At times it's too easy and then suddenly it's super hard. I can deal with a game being hard, but it seems out of place here. I beat the boss, but I don't feel like trying to get all the mask pieces in order to get the true ending because I can tell it's just going to frustrate me.

I actually kinda like the dimension shifting platforming puzzles. The one that's driving me nuts is the Megaman like one with the disappearing platforms.

My review of the site from the IGN.com thread.

I feel like Smith is the kind of person who would probably agree with the assessment of being "pussywhipped". But he's also pretty open and honest to his fans so hopefully at least some of them will take the message to heart.
  8. The 'Does this thread exist?' thread

It would be easier if tags were actually utilized, but at this point they mostly serve the same function as twitter hashtags and only comment on the thread itself instead of actually being a useful search tool. I'm somewhat guilty of doing it too though.
  9. Movie/TV recommendations

No I didn't! Did they start airing the third season? I gotta go watch that!
  10. Well, it's not really a secret cause I never denied it. And to be fair, some of the information I've been giving is from my memory but a lot of it is also from Memory-Alpha, the Star Trek wiki, which I think is one of the better wikis out there. Also I can really only speak about TNG and Voyager as I've seen those the most. I need to finish DS9 one of these days. As for Tin Man, he does not return in the series.
  11. It's one of the episodes in my list before so if you've been watching at least those you'll see it.
  12. Life

It's been snowing here and the roads are pretty bad right now. I did some sliding around yesterday and today and almost didn't make it up the driveway last night. It's made me really appreciate having a garage now.
  13. Movie/TV recommendations

If we're talking about the BBC Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch, it is amazing and I love the shit out of it.

  16. The "what the crap was that game called again?" thread

    On-topic with this off-topic thought: I agree
  17. Feminism

I hate that my only contributions to this thread are PA related, but Mike has put up post about his past behavior and a New Year's resolution. He basically says that he's realized he's a bully, explains why he thinks he's become that way, and that's he's going to try and be better from now on. There's also a bit about how PA is trying to separate itself from Child's Play and PAX because they realized that the PA brand is hurting more than helping. Whether or not he actually does change remains to be seen, but I still think the fact that he acknowledges hurtful things have been said and done is some progress. It certainly doesn't absolve him of guilt, but it's a better step than purposefully remaining ignorant.
  18. Idle Thumbs 139: Happy News Year

One thing I keep hearing about item renting in Zelda is that it finally provides a reason for needing money. After a while you are given the option to permanently buy them which means they won't ever be removed from your inventory and also allows you to upgrade the items via a side quest. Renting is cheap but purchasing is 800 (or 1200 for the fire/ice rods). The first item can be purchased for half price. Assuming one of the rods is purchased first, it means the total required for purchasing all the items is 7400 rupees. There's also a fairy in the game who will give you an item after you throw 3000 rupees into her fountain.

  22. You Have One of Three Wishes

Exactly. You would still suffer from physical and mental fatigue, you just wouldn't need sleep to fix it. Not eating means you won't feel hunger or weak from lack of food, but it doesn't mean those organs will always be in perfect health. I don't consider that a hidden drawback because it's always a possibility that isn't necessarily related to eating. Not needing sleep seems cleaner to me, if that makes any sense.
  23. The Big LucasArts Playthrough

Good thinking taking a screenshot of the bones. That puzzle drove me nuts as a kid because every time I would swear I had gotten the bones placed correctly and I could resurrect my turtle friend, only to find that I was wrong and had to go back to the fossil. Being able to take a screenshot easily would have probably saved me a lot of time and frustration.
  24. You Have One of Three Wishes

So this poll was prompted by a random conversation Tegan and I were having last night. I said that if I had a genie who would grant me 3 wishes without any downsides, one of them would be to never need sleep. I mentioned that a coworker of mine said he'd rather not eat. Teg proposed not needing to breathe. After some discussion this poll was created. I have since given the topic further thought and here are my I'm-thinking-about-this-way-too-much conclusions. Biologically speaking, not breathing or eating poses problems to me. You would presumably still have a respiratory/digestive system even though you wouldn't require them. You'd have what are essentially extra organs that could become infected, diseased, cancerous, damaged, septic, etc. I don't consider those "hidden drawbacks" but rather potential liabilities. Not sleeping on the other hand doesn't seem to suffer from this flaw as far as I can tell. From a physics point of view, not eating is interesting, but it raises the question where does your body get the energy it needs? Am I like Superman and absorb solar radiation? Or am I somehow generating free energy? If that's the case, I keep picturing a Matrix scenario where a body that can generate energy without needing food really is a great battery. Even ignoring those concerns, I'd still pick sleeping. I enjoy eating food so I'd still do that even if I didn't require it. Not needing to breathe would be interesting but I don't see enough advantage to pick it over sleeping. I would rather have the lost time. There are only a few instances in which I would actively choose to sleep, such as being on a long flight or drive.
