A Dedicated Thread For Talking About Star Trek Episodes
SecretAsianMan replied to BigJKO's topic in Movies & Television
Yeah, there's certainly a lot of dumb stuff in TNG, but when it's good, it's really good. I'll probably watch most of DS9, skipping the ones that are generally disliked. It depends on how into it I get. -

Additional episodes I liked for one reason or another. I'll give a one line description and you can decide if you want to watch it. The Enemy - 3x07 (Romulans) Sins of the Father - 3x17 (Worf defends his family name) Reunion - 4x07 (More Klingons, introduces Worf's son Alexander and Gowron who is also important in DS9) Data's Day - 4x11 (A day in the life of, well, Data. Also includes a tap dancing Dr. Crusher) Devil's Due - 4x13 (Picard the space lawyer) Clues - 4x14 (Mystery on the Enterprise) The Nth Degree - 4x19 (Barclay the super genius) Half a Life - 4x22 (An episode about assisted suicide in a way, also has Troi's mom but in a less irritating capacity than normal) The Mind's Eye - 4x24 (The Manchurian Candidate in space) In Theory - 4x25 (Data gets a girlfriend) Disaster - 5x05 (The Enterprise gets crippled in space and the bridge crew gets stuck in different parts of the ship) Conundrum - 5x14 (Retrograde amnesia in space) The Outcast - 5x17 (Episode about gender identity, seems quite relevant now) I Borg - 5x23 (The crew adopts a Borg drone) Realm of Fear - 6x02 (More Barclay) Rascals - 6x07 (Kid versions of some of the crew have to take the ship back from some Ferengi) Starship Mine - 6x18 (Die Hard in space, sort of, with Picard as Bruce Willis) Frame of Mind - 6x21 (Riker loses his grip on reality) Second Chances - 6x24 (Riker meets a duplicate of himself) Timescape - 6x25 (Time manipulation) Inheritance - 7x10 (Data meets his mother) Parallels - 7x11 (Worf travels through alternate realities, includes this: Genesis - 7x19 (The crew de-evolves, also more Barclay) First Contact - Second TNG Movie (The only one of the TNG movies I'd really recommend as any good) -

I had the exact same thought. -

I'm not sure what that means so... thanks? I actually thought Dr. Crusher was rather lovely too, but this fact is mostly hidden in the series (except for one episode where she's romanced by a ghost. Yes, that is real). I can provide additional episodes I think are worth watching if BigJKO and Ben X aren't getting too burned out. I stuck to Ben's request of 20 as a limit for the first list but that meant skipping other ones I thought were good. If you guys move on to DS9, I might join you in watching. I never got into it like I did TNG and Voyager when it first came out because it deals with more political/real world issues than the other two, but I'll give it a shot now. It might be better if I have other people I can discuss it with as I watch. -
If you have a save, you should do it again except this time don't revive Maggie. You get a slightly different ending. While I really love the setting and atmosphere of The Dig, I completely agree that the puzzle design is pretty weak. It's a good example for me of a game that I think of as a "favorite" but not necessarily "best".

I think the scores should try to be assigned so that the average of the scores on the site is as close to 7 as possible (without any 7s actually being given) thus maintaining the objective notion that 7 is average. -
How about a game where you can black out after too much of a substance, the game procedurally generates actions your character undertook while blacked out, then you wake up in the morning with no idea what you did and have to deal with the consequences?

I'd love to contribute, but I'm probably not qualified because a) I'm a terrible writer and 2) I don't have enough time to play games and write about them. -
I didn't see that tweet, but I still agree with some of the stuff he said. Maybe it is unreasonable to expect these Steam Machines to compete with a console, but if they're not meant to then I don't get the point either. I can get behind the Steam OS and the controller, but what the machines are supposed to be is just confusing to me.
-
I don't think the Kuchera's Polygon article is saying that Steam Machines are bad for gamers. More like they're not living up to what he (and to some extent myself) was hoping for. I think there may be a segment of the market that's looking for a way to play Steam on their TV without building a PC themselves. Not everyone's going to do all the research and some will possibly assume that something that says Steam on it and has the Steam logo will play anything on the Steam store.

I went back and gave that disappearing platforms one another shot. Got it on the first try. I still think it was annoying as fuck, but I guess it was one of those cases where you leave after being frustrated and come back to find it's way easier than you thought. After that, getting the rest of the items was easy. I haven't done the Infierno stuff yet, might try that next.

This is a pretty good summary of how I feel about it

I was about to post the exact same thing.

Valve showed off 13 Steam Machines at CES. The prices range from $500 to $6000 with a few TBD. While I still like the idea of a Steam Machine, I don't think paying more money than a next gen console for something that does less out of the box is going to convince people they're a good idea. Also they said nothing about the controller pricing or availability. http://www.engadget.com/2014/01/06/valve-steam-machines-specs/

Personally, I feel about sleeping the way you feel about eating. I enjoy eating so much I'd do it even if I didn't need to so it would be a wasted wish for me. And while I like having cool dreams and the feeling of going to sleep when I'm tired, I'd rather just not be tired in the first place, not to mention the ever looming threat of bad dreams and nightmares. Breathing is such a background thing that I'm not bothered by the need to do it and I don't think it's removal would really benefit me in a significant way. Eating and sleeping are more active, concious choices. I would imagine that eliminating one of them would have a larger impact on your life. I think the overall goal of the wish is to eliminate one thing you "need" so that you can focus more on things that you "want".
-
You can still choose to sleep Rodi. The way the wish is phrased in this case means that you don't need it, but you can still do it if you like. So if you like dreaming or some kind of separator between days, you can still have that.

I still think they're good, just the weakest of each group.

Man, I loved Moriarty. He's so much more interesting than the standard "evil professor" portrayal. Good to hear that the second episode is good. In each of the past 2 seasons, I thought the second episode was usually the weakest one.

Patrick Klepek did his first Spelunky stream today. He hasn't been playing very long and he's been avoiding learning about the game in advance so his reactions are interesting. At about the 29 minute mark he gets to the temple for the first time and has no idea what to expect so everything is new to him. Also headphone warning at about the 39 minute mark.

Incidentally, today is Sherlock Holmes' birthday.

I did manage to get all the combos in the chicken training house and I actually did like some of the platforming challenges but that disappearing platforms one is driving me crazy. I might try it a couple more times but I'm pretty sure my frustration will get the better of me and I'll just quit like a baby.
-
I see the Recently Completed thread as a way to capture short impressions of a game. Just a couple lines highlighting some of the good and bad points. Any kind of lengthy discussion should go in the game's own thread. Also as a record like Merus said.

Guacamelee: Fun Metroidvania game with a luchadore theme and style, but with some really unexpectedly difficult and frustrating platforming. The worst sections are optional but it's the only thing keeping me from getting 100%, which most likely means I never will. A bit short too but I'd still recommend it.
-
I can see how the "true" ending would be completely different, given the way the "normal" ending went. Zelda and Metroidvania games tend to be among the few I actively try to 100%, but in this case it's really frustrating in an unexpected and inconsistant way. I don't want to ruin the overall good impression I have of this game so I think I'm stopping here and I'll probably youtube the ending.
