A Dedicated Thread For Talking About Star Trek Episodes
SecretAsianMan replied to BigJKO's topic in Movies & Television
I like a lot of those episodes too. My list was mostly made just glancing over the series titles so I've probably missed a few here and there that might be worth watching. Some of the episode names aren't very good descriptions of what happens so I probably just skipped over it if I didn't remember right away. -

I bolded some episodes, but I would also suggest watching the Demon episode even though I don't think it's very good. It sets up another episode later and that one won't make much sense if you didn't see Demon. It's also kind of a spoiler so I don't want to say which one specifically. Collective is also important to explain the presense of some new characters on the show. And obviously watch the first episode otherwise none of the show will make sense. -

Yeah, I'll go back and do that. I'm largely going to ignore the bigger plots when I do that though and just stick to episodes I thought were good. -

I haven't played Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, but from what I understand the way the game controls is a crucial part of the storytelling. -
The things about The Dig that I remember are pretty much everything except the puzzles. I really liked the story, landscapes, characters, theme, all of it. It's just a shame the puzzle design was kind of weak.

Curse is my favorite Monkey Island game. There are so many things I love about it but I won't spoil them yet. I think technically Mega Monkey mode is supposed to be the hard mode and the other mode the standard one, but it's not really that much harder so your statement is mostly accurate. Basically, it just adds a few steps to most puzzle solutions.

Parts 1 and 2 should each get a 5 so the whole game gets a 10. -

I have a hard time taking any Ferengi related thing seriously entirely because of how they were introduced. I know that the early Ferengi don't really resemble the later Ferengi very much, but that first impression is hard to shake. I mean, look at this Their weapons were whips that shot energy. How am I supposed to take that seriously? -

I have also been keeping myself purposefully ignorant about the game but I'm planning on playing it right away. Also, to anyone watching the documentaries, the last update said that starting with Episode 15, they will assume you have full knowledge of Act 1. -

Here's a Voyager list. It was trickier than TNG because of the ongoing plot threads. For the most part I tried not to get too deep into the big plots while keeping some of the more interesting episodes. In terms of how the show lines up with DS9, Voyager started about halfway through DS9's third season. There are only a few references to events that happen on DS9 (aside from the recurring theme of part of the crew being Maquis) and they're mostly either not important or easily figured out. Bolded episodes I felt were especially good for one reason or another. Season 1 Caretaker – 1x01/1x02 (not an especially good episode but it’s the pilot) Ex Post Facto – 1x08 State of Flux – 1x11 Jetrel – 1x15 Season 2 Projections – 2x03 Maneuvers – 2x11 Alliances – 2x14 Meld – 2x16 Dreadnought – 2x17 Death Wish – 2x18 (first of the Voyager Q episodes) Investigations – 2x20 Deadlock – 2x21 Season 3 Flashback – 3x02 (features Sulu) The Chute – 3x03 False Profits – 3x05 (Ferengi shenanigans) The Q and the Grey – 3x11 (more Q) Fair Trade – 3x13 Unity – 3x17 Before and After – 3x21 Real Life – 3x22 (kinda sappy episode about the Doctor) Worst Case Scenario – 3x25 Scorpion – 3x26 Season 4 Scorpion, Part II – 4x01 The Gift – 4x02 Nemesis – 4x04 The Raven – 4x06 Year of Hell Parts I and II – 4x08, 4x09 Message in a Bottle – 4x14 (a largely comedic episode) Living Witness – 4x23 Demon – 4x24 (not a particularly good episode but it sets up another one later on) Hope and Fear – 4x26 Season 5 Night – 5x01 Timeless – 5x06 Nothing Human – 5x08 Counterpoint – 5x10 Latent Image – 5x11 Bride of Chaotica! – 5x12 (another largely comic episode) Dark Frontier – 5x15, 5x16 Course: Oblivion – 5x18 Relativity – 5x24 (time travel hijinks) Equinox – 5x26 Season 6 Equinox, Part II – 6x01 Tinker Tenor Doctor Spy – 6x04 The Voyager Conspiracy – 6x09 Pathfinder – 6x10 (Barclay!) Blink of an Eye – 6x12 Collective – 6x16 Child’s Play – 6x19 Live Fast and Prosper – 6x21 (another somewhat silly episode) Fury – 6x23 Life Line – 6x24 The Haunting of Deck Twelve – 6x25 Season 7 Imperfection – 7x02 Repression – 7x04 Critical Care – 7x05 Inside Man – 7x06 Body and Soul – 7x07 Shattered – 7x11 Repentance – 7x13 Human Error – 7x18 Q2 – 7x19 Author, Author – 7x20 (the latter half has similar themes to The Measure of a Man although strangely Data is not mentioned at all) Homestead – 7x23 Renaissance Man – 7x24 Endgame – 7x25, 7x26 -

I'll start putting a Voyager list together. One thing you should be prepared for is that while TNG, DS9, and Voyager are all Star Trek shows that take place in the same era, they are all very different shows. They will of course contain similar elements, but the tone and themes will vary a lot. Also DS9 and Voyager have more ongoing plots compared to the relatively stand alone episodes of TNG, so skipping a lot of episodes will mean missing things. -
Last night I dreamt that I was inside a Metroid game. It was similar to Metroid Fusion, but the thing that made it weird was that even though I was in the game, my perspective was still the 2D side view. I could feel and hear everything in the environment as though I were there, but it was like my eyes had been detached and I was looking at myself from the side. I also remember really needing the ice missiles at one point but not having them which caused me to panic.

I could compile a Voyager list similar to my TNG one, but I don't know if you want to watch both Voyager and DS9 at the same time. I believe Gormongous said he was putting a DS9 list together. It certainly won't be me. I've only seen three episodes of Enterprise (the first one, the last one, and a random one in the middle) so I can't personally say if it's any good. But from what I understand, you're probably just as well off not watching it. -
Shorts in Winter (Gone Home vs Brothers)
SecretAsianMan replied to Tupperward's topic in Video Gaming
I have not played Brothers, so I can't compare the two from first hand experience, but I disagree with the idea that Gone Home would have been just as effective as a book. Had it been written as a story, I would have read it from start to finish and learned about everything in a linear order. But that's not how my Gone Home experience went. I didn't find the journals in order, I didn't get all the notes, I didn't find all the clues. This means that I experienced Gone Home in a particular way. Going through the thread on this forum, it seems like other people had different experiences than I did because they found different notes or drew different conclusions or played a different way. We all played the same game yet got different things out of it. When I replayed the game, my thoughts and feelings changed as I learned more. To me, this is a crucial part of my appreciation for the game. Maybe as a player I didn't have a lot of impact on the plot, but the way I encountered the plot had a lot of impact on me. From what I understand of Brothers, this would not have happened. It may tell a meaningful story in a meaningful way (and from what I hear it does), but I don't think it's likely to vary as much from person to person, subject to how much they connect with the story. Everyone will experience the same story in a similar manner. That doesn't make it any less important than Gone Home, it's just different. -

I don't remember what day it is but I'm pretty sure the video length is 9:22. -
Your points about Episode One are accurate. I agree that it didn't really do much to add to the Half-Life formula. Personally, I'm ok with that because I wasn't expecting anything like that to begin with, but I can understand wanting more and being disappointed you didn't get it. My memories of Episode Two are kind of tainted, ironically by 2 achievements that I stupidly decided I wanted to get. The first was launching the gnome into space by sticking him in the rocket, the second was not letting any buildings get destroyed during the strider battle. The gnome one was extremely frustrating because it was nearly impossible to get him to stay in the car so I had to keep stopping. The second one I never got at all. It's completely unfair to say I didn't enjoy the second episode as much because of these things, but them's the breaks. Also a little tip about the hunters: if you hit one with an object that has a few of their projectiles in it, it will instantly kill them. They disintegrate as if they were hit by an energy ball. Just hold something with your gravity gun, let them shoot it, then fire it at them.

That was one of the reasons I never really got into DS9 my first time around. None of the characters really seemed that interesting to me except for the TNG transplants (Chief O'Brien and later Worf) and Garak. -
Personally, I like Episode One more. I understand, and even agree with, some of what you're saying about Episode Two. Valve stated that they had specific things in mind when designing the episodes. Episode One was mainly focused on character development so they did a lot of work with the AI (mainly Alyx's AI), which is why the game's environments are full of reused assets. Episode Two was about new environments. Both actually started development at the same time though so I don't know if they had the intentions you were getting. The reason I like Episode One more is I'm a huge sucker for co-op games and I liked having an AI partner who wasn't totally helpless. The episode could very easily have become a long escort mission, but in wasn't. In fact, there's an achievement for Episode One called "The One Free Bullet" that you can earn by firing only one bullet (in the very beginning when you have to shoot a lock). This turns the episode into a reverse escort mission where you're the helpless escortee and have to rely on Alyx to deal with most of the enemies. I suspect that experience would not hold up if I replayed it now, but in my mind at least I liked it more.

I second those recommends, Kirby Super Star in particular. It's probably my favorite Kirby game of them all. Nightmare in Dreamland was also fun. It's mostly a remake of the original Kirby's Adventure, but one of the modes available is the Meta Knightmare, which lets you play the entire game as Meta Knight. I think one of the versions of Kirby Super Star also has something similar.

As if this thread wasn't proof enough that I'm a Star Trek dork, this comment reminded me that Data's pattern of blinking his eyes is based on the fourier series to give it the appearance of randomness. That fact came from the episode Inheritance (which I originally meant to put on my list but I forgot) where Data meets his mother. -

I feel the same way. While I think the systems present in DayZ are cool in theory, it's not something I would enjoy myself in practice. Maybe if there was (is?) a pure co-op mod I might be more interested, but it sounds like that would take a lot of the tension away.
