I don't expect anyone to patronize my late playthough of the game, especially if they've already expressed their opinions in this thread before. In that case it's on me to go back and read them, although I probably won't because there's almost 70 pages here and who has that kind of time. So if you want to say something else now go ahead but certainly don't feel any obligation to repeat yourself. I do admit I am enjoying them. I think in general I'm approaching this game in maybe the worst way, which is having seen/heard about the final product for months before trying it. The art/graphics aren't stunning me because I've seen them before in screenshots or videos, and that amazing first hour wasn't that amazing to me because I basically knew what I was getting into already. I'll try bumping up the difficulty because right now it's frankly too easy on medium, which means that any combat choices I make are fairly meaningless so I'm treating the game as COD in the Clouds.

Dang, that really is a shame. I was looking forward to seeing how you approached that particular puzzle.

Sadly, I won't be at this one. Someone besides me will have to fail at properly organizing a meetup.

A Dedicated Thread For Talking About Star Trek Episodes
SecretAsianMan replied to BigJKO's topic in Movies & Television
It's episode 18 on the wiki, but that's using the assumption that the two parter Dark Frontier has 2 separate numbers, which was not always the case. -
Did you figure this out on your own, or was it from the podcast when Jake talked about it? From the way you describe it, it sounds like you heard it from someone else, which is a shame because I think this puzzle is either the best (by noticing the exact thing you needed to notice and feeling amazingly clever) or the worst (by brute forcing it or being forced to use a guide).

I paid zero attention to Infinite before it was released. Any impressions I had of the game only came after it was finally out, and it's only now that I've finally gotten around to actually playing it. So basically I know nothing of what the game could have been like or was like at some point. I have to say though that I do like the idea of actually getting Elizabeth engaged in the combat, and more specifically that doing so would have a narrative impact. In the current form of the game, Elizabeth just ducks into a corner when there's trouble, occasionally popping out to throw me a gun or something. When the game told me that during combat I didn't need to worry about Elizabeth and she could take care of herself, I was hoping that meant she would actually be doing something. The first time I saw her cower down and then express shock/disgust that I had just ripped a guy's eye out, I thought maybe she would become more involved as she got used to it. But even though she's actively mad at me right now, her behavior is exactly the same, so I very much doubt I'm getting any level of involvement beyond being thrown random loot and opening tears. I think a cool design choice would have been to be able to request that Elizabeth do things like open tears beneath a guy so that he plummets to his death, or that even actually pick up a gun and shoot, and that by doing so you're damaging her psyche. The more you request her to take direct action, the more disturbed and crazed she becomes. Or you could go the other way and keep her innocent by doing all the dirty work yourself. That's the kind of thing I imagine a Bioshock game could do really well, considering how much they love audio logs of people descending into madness.

Damn it, but computers have become really complicated
SecretAsianMan replied to Erkki's topic in Idle Banter
I'm actually using a TP-Link device right now, specifically this thing. It was originally purchased to use on my laptop mostly because it was cheap but I'm finding it to be very solid. I appreciate the card recommendation, but I may not need it soon. My house was supposed to come with Ethernet prewired into the walls (which it did) and 3 wall outlets to plug it into (which it didn't). I've finally gotten the company that did it to admit they screwed up and they're going to come fix it. Unfortunately my computer is currently on the other side of the room from the outlet so there's going to be a long cable on the floor (or possibly ceiling/wall if it's long enough), but hopefully it means I'll have a wired connection again. -
Contrary to all the negatives I've expressed about the game so far, I don't hate it, at least not yet. I'm mostly just underwhelmed. The combat feels ok but nothing revolutionary or especially exciting. The story's not really getting it's hooks into me, but that's not a totally fair position because I knew a good amount of the plot before starting the game. The acting seems pretty well done which is what I'd expect from a major studio like this. I overall don't think it's a bad game, it's just that there are a lot of things I don't like. Some of them are little such as Elizabeth's shock at Booker's intention to take her to New York instead of Paris despite having called him the roguish type and seeing him brutally murder a ton of dudes. Others are bigger like the excessive violence and racial setting. One thing I am enjoying is zipping around on the skylines. Moving around on those things is pretty satisfying and is a nice contrast to the master of parkour that many other games seem to present. As a person who tends to play shooters from a distance and avoid close combat where possible I appreciate the ability to quickly move to high ground or a new defensive location while still being able to have offensive capability. To balance that, here's a nitpicky thing that bugged me. I was walking around the Finkton loading docks and I saw some gear. I just wanted to see what it was, but I didn't take it. Yet that was enough to trigger everyone to start shooting at me. I saw that the action was in red text, which I guess should have told me this would happen, but I was hoping that looking would be ok while actually taking the thing would have set everyone off. I probably would have taken it anyway because it was a good piece of gear and karma seems to mean nothing in this game, but I was still bothered that I was "punished" for looking despite taking nothing.

I've now met up with the Vox Populi. I'm amused that even though Elizabeth doesn't trust me and has her grumpy face on, she's still throwing me money and ammo.

I vote we move the Infinite discussion back to the actual thread because I can't carry on this conversation in 2 places.

Idle Explorers (Spelunky, um, thumbs)

I skipped recording yesterday because I was having internet issues. Here's another one with the Metroid mod, this time my voice came through, although I died in the dumbest way. -
Damn it, but computers have become really complicated
SecretAsianMan replied to Erkki's topic in Idle Banter
It's been several hours now without any problems and I'm feeling pretty confident that the problem has been solved. I'll have to find a better looking long term solution, but until then it's working just fine. Thanks for the help guys. -
I'm super tempted to click those, but I'll wait until I've finished the game.

It wasn't plugged into a 3.0 port, but they're all pretty close to each other. I've plugged it into the extension cable and while it's too early to say for sure, so far it's working great. It's already been longer than the usual amount of time and the speed is still good. It looks ridiculous but at this point I don't care so long as it works. -
...for me to poop on! (I'm actually not done with it yet...)

I liked Living Witness for it's method of employing the evil twin without actually using twins, clones, goatee wearing mirror universe counterparts, or other equally cheesy sci-fi tropes. -
I'm glad to see I'm not totally alone in my thoughts about the game. I do plan on finishing it unless it turns into a slog at some point, but this far I'm not being IGN.com'd by it. One thing I'd like to know in advance. Is there any kind of point the some of the choices I'm being presented with? Is it some kind of obfuscated morality system like the decisions to save or harvest the Little Sisters? I already have a general idea of how the story plays out so I'm not overly concerned with spoilers.

Damn it, but computers have become really complicated

I did try different USB ports to no effect, but it could be an interference issue. It's one of those dongles designed for laptops, so it's very low profile and fits right up against the port. The utility reports that I'm getting a strong signal from the router, but that doesn't necessarily mean much. In fact now that I think about it, when I try to access the router directly it responds rather slowly too, which would seem to indicate some kind of interference. I'll try it when I get home. -
As a follow up to my last post about strange charges on my credit card (and in the process being a jerk and completely ignoring everyone else's posts since), they found that the charges seems to have been fraudulently made and are reversing them. I hope nothing else comes from this but I'm going to keep my eye on my account activity for a while just in case.

I think I might have made a big mistake... How does VAC work exactly?
SecretAsianMan replied to Tanukitsune's topic in Video Gaming
Is there any kind of warning when VAC detects something or is it one minute you're fine, the next you're banned? -

SecretAsianMan replied to Erkki's topic in Idle Banter
I don't think it's an interference problem because it works just fine for those first few minutes and it worked all the time on my laptop in the exact same location. I do have an extension cable though so I'll probably give it a try anyway. -
We occasionally have that, in fact it's going on this month. But it's kind of a moot point here because so many people wear jeans regularly anyway and the dress code is never that strictly enforced. Jeans also serve a more practical purpose than slacks where I work so there's a legitimate excuse for wearing them.
