I honestly don't even remember them all at this point. The 2 that I can recall are I probably had other things at the time that bothered me but I disliked that movie enough to push most of it out of my mind.

Damn it, but computers have become really complicated
SecretAsianMan replied to Erkki's topic in Idle Banter
I looked at the code (as well as a technical breakdown of the flaw) and it's scary how simple it is. It's literally one line of code that's the problem, and the fix is like 5 lines. It reminds me of college when I was learning about buffer overflow exploits. I complain about the cyber security hoops that I have to jump through at work, but at times like these they really make sense. -
Idle Explorers (Spelunky, um, thumbs)

I don't go to the worm during dailies because there's not much in the way of money, but I do visit the mothership more often than not. It's a risky challenge but I like the spice it adds, plus the opportunity to wreak havoc with the plasma cannon. When I'm just messing around, I'll usually do the worm for fun. -

I was just about to post that comic. I didn't actually know the mechanism of how it worked but that helped me get a better idea. -
Also the cereal needs an "Oops All" variant. Like "Oops All BigDogs".

Ok, I'm now onboard with hacking. I think my favorite part of it isn't the direct effect it has on the system, but rather that it locks the doors and prevents people from entering. Also the fact that you can see into the room in nebulas means it pairs well with mind control. On my current run I've been using mind control and hacking as a quick combo at the start of a fight to disable a system (usually weapons) long enough for me to take it out with my cheap lasers then slowly pick off the rest of the ship. I'm not really into the charge weapons, I love the new chain ones though. I did manage to pick up a Vulcan on a run, and even got a pre-igniter, but didn't have the resources to utilize it fully. That thing is awesome, I'd love to mess around with it some more. I'm liking having Lanius crewmembers. Trying to unlock the B ship configuration has led me to an anti-boarding strategy I hadn't considered before, which is constantly maintaining a vacuum in every room that's not occupied by non-Lanius so any boarders automatically start losing health. Of course this doesn't work when I fight other Lanius. It also requires at least one point in doors, or someone manning it. One thing about getting the achievement for less that 20% oxygen that's driving me nuts is I almost had it but then I got screwed by a hack on my door control. I didn't realize it until after the fight, but when the doors got hacked they all slammed shut and my oxygen levels went up to 60%, costing me the achievement. It was kind of a hilarious scenario but it also really annoyed me because I was literally one jump away from getting it.

The slogan needs to be "Start your morning with a hot scoop of Idle Thumbs (cereal)"

I hate the word "functionality". It sounds like a fake word to me.

I said it earlier, but Lastpass is free. It's just certain features that require a premium account but the free version is still pretty robust and includes most of the things mentioned (password generator, vault, autofill, local encryption/decryption, sharing, browser extensions, some forms of 2-factor authentication). The main reason I have a premium subscription is because of mobile use. Typing passwords on a phone is WAY more annoying and Lastpass makes it incredibly convenient. But that isn't a discouragement of the other password managers. Certainly use whatever you think is better. -

Lastpass definitely does this too. You can set the length, use of numbers, letters (both upper and lower case), and special characters, and even toggle avoiding pronounceable passwords. It also does a quick check of the password's strength as they're generated. And yeah, picking a strong master password is very important. Two-factor authentication is also a must. I use Goggle's authenticator on my phone, but Lastpass has options for other forms, including paper or usb thumb drives (some of them are premium only). One more neat thing you can do with Lastpass is sharing. Sharing requires both parties to have a Lastpass account. It lets you share login access to a website with another person WITHOUT revealing the password to them. If that person is smart enough, they can figure out ways to reveal the password but you can revoke the shared access at any time. I've found this useful for families. I shared my Netflix account with my father this way. I'm doing a lot of promoting of Lastpass; I swear I'm not getting paid by them for it. I just really like the service. -

I can totally understand that concern but until someone presents me with a better and more secure option I'm going to stick with it. -
Idle Thumbs 153: Blondie, Freckles, and Glasses
SecretAsianMan replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I agree with electricblue. I was born and raised in the US, so I was given an education that focused on Western history. However being of Chinese decent, I have a personal empathy with that side of history. In China, there is still a very large degree of animosity toward Japan that stems from the events of the Pacific theatre of WWII. Nazis aren't considered to be nearly as historically evil as Japan is. Even the swastika isn't seen in the same light because it's use as a religious symbol long predates the Nazi adoption (granted the one associated in Asia with luck and prosperity is turned 90 degrees from the Nazi one). In the culture of the Americas and Europe, the Nazis are the paragon of evil but if you look at it from another culture there are far worse things. -
That's exciting news. Supergiant is one of my favorite devs right now. While I ultimately think that I will prefer Bastion over Transistor (simply because Bastion is more my kind of game), I am still really excited to play Transistor.

Yeah, I also have a few key passwords committed to memory. When the password is generated, it is shown to you so you can decide to keep it or generate a new one. Even after the password is chosen and saved, you can go into your vault and click "Show Password" so that you can see what it is instead of getting ********. There's also an option to download a local backup in various formats, such as an encrypted file or a csv/excel file. At least that's how it works in Lastpass. Can't speak for the others. -

It's also worth mentioning that Lastpass is free, with a premium option for additional features such as use on mobile devices and additional 2-factor options. The premium option is a subscription service that's relatively cheap, $12/year I think. Lastpass can autofill additional information besides usernames/passwords such as name, address, credit card numbers and banking info, etc. Even though it uses cloud storage, the information is encrypted and decrypted on your computer as JonCole said, so even if their severs are compromised all any hacker will get is encrypted gibberish. Not even Lastpass themselves have access to the decryption keys. There are extensions for Chrome, Firefox, etc. that will let you access the tools without needing the website. 1Password is a similar thing I think, but I've never used it so I honestly don't know. -
Haha, I was just about to come ask that. What about death due to a random event (like helping with a viral outbreak or taking a strange creature onboard that eats someone)? I assume there are some kind of events give you additional options if you have a cloning bay.

Heartbleed really is a frightening thing, but it's made me really glad I use Lastpass. Especially since they built a tool to tell you if any of the sites you use were compromised. -
Cool, thanks for the answers. I don't purposely kill them very often, only when they're near death anyway and I haven't upgraded the bay's healing between jumps. And dibs, I know about that upgrade but I'm one of the people that hates the teleporters so I never use them.

I started playing the AE last night. I was never that good at FTL to begin with and it's a comfort to know that I still suck. I haven't really gotten the hang of using hacking but I LOVE mind control. Flak cannons just aren't working well for me, but I've only used them once or twice. Despite all the new content (which I love), I have to say what I really like the most is just the extra polish that's been applied to the game. The little UI tweaks such as highlighting a section of a room when you send a guy there, better descriptions of crew members and weapons/tech, manning stations like doors and sensors, saving crew positions, etc. It's so much fun. A couple questions about the cloning bay: 1. Does it have a queue for cloning guys? If, for example, one of my crew members dies fighting off an attack and a second dies a short while later while the first guy is in the process of getting cloned, does the bay automatically start cloning the second guy when the first is finished. 2. Are there any downsides to the cloning process? Is purposely asphyxiating crew members after a fight to get them back to full health a viable strategy? By the way, that tip about countering enemy mind control with yours is the best. Thanks guys.

I've had a dumb short story idea floating around in my head for a while. It's a story about a person who travels back in time with the intention of killing his/her younger self because they are the one who created the thing that causes end of the world and the only way to stop it is to prevent it from ever occurring. I haven't decided what the thing is yet, but I'm leaning toward a self-aware AI that starts the robot apocalypse. I've never evolved it beyond an idea because I suck at writing and I've convinced myself it's been done already somewhere.

I felt that way about Tobey Maguire in Spiderman, except I don't really like him all that much. I liked watching Shia LaBeouf get thrown around in Constantine. In general I enjoy the Marvel movies. I don't think they're great, or even all that good (except the Avengers, which I liked a whole lot) but I enjoy them for what they are. The only one I had any serious problems with was Ironman 3. That movie has so many plot holes it drove me nuts, even by comic book movie standards.

Super Smash Bros. (Spoiler: Snake Kills Ganondorf)
SecretAsianMan replied to tegan's topic in Video Gaming
I imagine it'll be one of the costume options for the villager. I was hoping that X would be a costume choice for Megaman, but it looks like he's only in the final smash maybe. Also Zero Suit Samus has jet boots now, but they're still ridiculous high heels. -
Oracle is the identity that Barbara Gordon takes after the Joker shoots her in the spine and she loses the use of her legs. Because of her genius intellect and computer skills, she basically becomes a superhero hacker and forms her own all female team, the Birds of Prey. Also that sounds like an awesome game.
