  1. The Dresden Files

The show and books weren't designed to be the same from the start. Butcher himself said the show wouldn't follow the exact story of the books and they were to be considered separate but similar things. I think it was ok for what it was, but the books are much better. However I also hear Paul Blackthorn's voice in my head as Harry's. I've never listened to any of the audiobooks, but I think it would have been cool if they got him to read them. But I hear James Marsters (aka Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) does a good job.

  3. The Dresden Files

I read that first chapter again. I've seriously forgotten a lot apparently. What's the thing in his head? I really don't remember anything about that from (I assume) Cold Days.
  4. Feminism

Opinion piece on Polygon about Male Privilege in gaming A couple of the points I feel are not necessarily true (like the idea that males are excluded from jokes about the size of their anatomy. I'm sure many a "small dick" insult has been thrown around) but they certainly happen much less often to men than women which is really the point.

The most direct way I can think of to nerf hacking would be to increase the cooldown so that like cloaking, timing becomes everything. Not that timing isn't important but it feels less important with hacking. A thing I would really love that's probably not easy to implement is to have one of your crew do an EVA and physically attack the hacking drone like any other intruder. It would remove that person from the ship and leave them vulnerable to weapons fire.

I think the additions in AE make drones great for defense and moderate to terrible on offense. A single defense or anti-combat drone can shut down an entire drone build, both for you and the AI. I've had a couple of hilarious stalemates where I'm facing off against a drone heavy Engi ship, with neither of us able to damage the other due to our drone defenses taking out everything the other ship throws at them. I'll usually try and get a drone system if it comes with a free defense drone or I managed to pick one up along the way and try to balance it with a system repair or anti-boarding drone, but I've basically given up combat drones altogether. Everything else seems more efficient and reliable when it comes to actually dealing damage.

Having my doors hacked weirdly screwed me out of getting the B layout for the Lanius ship a couple times.
  8. Android Games

If you like roguelikes, Pixel Dungeon is pretty great. It's completely free (not even any ads) and has a good amount of content.

Defense II drones shoot at the flak projectiles, but they shoot at everything. Flak also misses fairly often on its own. What bothers me about using the defense drones is that sometimes they just straight up miss the thing they're shooting at so the hacking drone will eventually get through. I wish there was an augment that messed up the enemy's targeting system causing them to miss more. Maybe make it rare and expensive to compensate.
  10. Life

I don't mind people being vegan, it doesn't bother me in the least. It's something I'll never do, but that really means nothing. The only ones that bother me are the ones that feel the need to lecture me on why they're right and I'm wrong. Of course that's also true about politics, religion, tastes, etc.
  11. Hipsters

Ok, that I am more willing to accept. My main problem with the broad label applied to "hipsters" is that it all smacks of arrogance to me. The idea that because you liked a thing before me and therefore you are better than me is bullshit. The idea that you don't like a thing that is popular and I do and that makes you better than me is bullshit. The idea that in order to be cool, you have to constantly show it off to everyone else to prove you are better is bullshit. The idea that YOU are the reason this thing is now considered cool is bullshit (unless you created it or you ACTUALLY ARE the reason it's become cool). These are of course huge generalizations and don't describe anyone specifically (at least not on these forums), but it's been the impression given to me by millions of instagrams, tweets, selfies, tumblrs, etc. and is the general reason I tend to dislike those things. I will admit that clyde (and others here) are tempering that opinion, but at present the word still has a bad taste in my mouth that's probably not going away any time soon. And to be perfectly clear, these are not attacks on anyone here. They are once held opinions that are rightfully being challenged. In fact, this group has done more to help me gain a broader perspective than any other group I've ever been in so thanks for that.
  12. The Dresden Files

I share your pain man. The Dresden Files are literally the only books I'm reading these days, which makes the long slow drip between books all the worse. I started the series a few months before Ghost Story came out and went through them all pretty quickly. I haven't reread any of them yet and I would love to do it before the next book but I don't think I'll have time. I'm pretty excited to read the next one though. Yay wizards! And I've now also read the first chapter of the next book. I've already forgotten so much, I may be forced to reread at least some of them first.
  13. FTL

Cloaking used to be the system of choice for me, but I've stopped using it in favor of hacking. I use the drones a lot more now, especially the Defense II drone. I also grab mind control basically every chance I get.
  14. Idle Thumbs 154: Super Good

I said super good a lot before I started listening to the podcast so my usage hasn't really changed that much. On the other hand, I say "best" and "worst" a lot more.
  15. Idle Sugar

I love peanut butter but because I don't like chocolate, I prefer Reese's Pieces to Reese's Cups. I also enjoy frozen Kit Kats. One thing I like doing is buying a cheap bag after Halloween, throwing it in the freezer, then slowly eating it for a month. My favorite candy bar would probably be the Whatchamacallit.

I was using the Mantis cruiser so I had a 4 person teleporter to start with. I lucked out and managed to get a full crew with 4 mantises (manti? mantes?) for my away team. The real trick was surviving the weapons fire during the first phase while my mantis crew took care of the gunners. After the ship was weaponless, it was a trivial matter to mind control a guy, teleport him to my ship, then station 2 mantis outside the room until the mind control wore off, although the mind controlled guy kept trying to man a station so I couldn't place him in a vacuum chamber like you initially planned. It wasn't efficient, but man was it effective.
  17. Idle Sugar

I'm not a chocolate person, but I once had actual Swiss chocolate while in Switzerland and that stuff was AMAZING. Rum raisin I believe. This thread is reminding me that it has been too long since I sent Jake some Nerds Ropes.
  18. FTL

So just for kicks, I tried this out on the flagship. It worked amazingly well. I didn't have the firepower to get through the shields and damage any systems, but a combination of defense drones and high evasion let me survive barrages long enough to take out the weapons, then pick off the crew one by one. I would have beaten the flagship except I made a mistake and accidentally killed the last crew member with my lasers (once the shields had been sufficiently weakened) and the automatic healing of systems was more than I could take out. But the theory was sound and could have led to my easiest victory yet had I not made that mistake.
  19. Amy Hennig and Naughty Dog Part Ways

I hate derailing threads like this, but I would also be interested in hearing about it. I suspect I agree with Architecture but am still interested in reading the thoughts.
  20. FTL

I just finished a run with the Mantis cruiser. I had another cloning bay/reconstructive teleport setup going, but what really saved the day during the flagship fight was the zoltan shield bypass. Being able to beam through the shields in phase 3 basically meant that every time the superweapon was charged the ship used it on the shields instead, which was totally useless against my teleporter/mind control/bomb combo. All I had to do was take potshots at the shields every now and then with my lasers to make sure it didn't fire the weapon at me instead. I also now have a much greater appreciation for the engines and dodging.
  21. FTL

I basically had that happen to me the other day, but luckily for me I was using the mantis ship and was mostly reliant on the teleporter so it didn't impact me that much. I still somewhat dislike the teleporter, but I can't deny how good it is especially with the reconstructive teleport and cloning bay.
  22. I Had A Random Thought...

Was anyone else ever told not to put your elbows on the table as a kid? Why is that a bad thing?
