  1. Idle Thumbs 156: The Holo-Violator

With my current work schedule, I only have one day off a week. When I get time to play anything, I tend to favor short things I can finish a session of in a sitting (which these days is mostly Spelunky and FTL). There's a great deal of satisfaction to be had in both enjoying the play and finishing a thing. I certainly appreciate the fun in the long form games too, but with less and less time to play, I'm finding that I tend to prefer the short and sweet ones these days.
  2. FTL

I find that without airlocks I'm pretty much only recruiting Rockmen when using the Shivan. I had a successful run last night with a full crew of Rockmen except for 2 Engi I kept around for repair purposes. I never did get the hang of using the fire bomb though. Seems like it would only be really useful with a teleporter that way I can place my Rockman boarding party in a room that's on fire. I ended up using the teleporter as part of my successful run, but I had already sold the fire bomb by then so I didn't get to try that strategy. Now that I've unlocked the C layout, it's time to hunt for the Crystal crusier.

Both really. It's a pretty traditional roguelike so you're going to die a lot until you get a better idea of some of the systems. And even then you're still going to die all the time. I've only "beat" the game a couple of times out of many, many, many attempts.
  4. FTL

Just unlocked the B layout for the Rock Cruiser. It's named the Shivan. I'm really hoping that's a nod toward the Freespace series. I seriously loved those games, especially Freespace 2. I'm not even really a fan of flight/space combat sims but FS2 was sooooooo good. I'm also pleased at the way I unlocked the layout by mind controlling an enemy Rockman helping another Rockman put out burning room.
  5. FTL

It counted as a win, I'll take it.
  6. Movie/TV recommendations

Man I love the Lost Room. That was such a great little series. I also agree about Warehouse 13, dumb cheesy fun. Just try not to think about it too hard or your head will explode.
  7. Nintendo 3DS

I don't know, that sounds kind of great to me. I like that the "logical" explanations in Layton games are even more absurd than what you think they're going to be. Working that stuff out in a crazy Phoenix Wright courtroom sounds like exactly what I want.
  8. The Dresden Files

That sounds awesome. I ordered the book digitally. I have physical copies of the first few, but the rest are ebooks. While I still prefer reading a physical book, I can't deny how incredibly convenient the digital version is, especially when I can read it on my phone while I'm in the bathroom at work. I would probably get a physical copy if I could attend something like that though.

    And Full Throttle
  10. The Dresden Files

I've preordered the book. I think this may be the first book I've ever done that with.
  11. Transistor

I think Greg and Amir are too busy making up for lost DOTA time to do press.
  12. New people: Read this, say hi.

Oh man, that Col. Flagg avatar takes me back. I haven't seen M*A*S*H in ages.
  13. Star Wars VII - Open spoilers

Oh god, what if the twist is that Luke becomes the Joker.
  14. Star Wars VII - Open spoilers

I think Gormongous' reasoning makes the most sense to me. Obviously the books aren't going to be collected and burned with all copies destroyed, but it does make them seem less "legitimate" and more like elaborate fan fiction. What's likely going to happen is the current EU will slowly die out and a new EU will rise up in its place based on the new movies. For fans of the previous EU, it basically means the universe they were interested in is ending and being replaced with something that is likely to suck. Of course I'm arguing for a position that isn't my own so I basically have no idea what I'm talking about.
  15. BioShock Infinite

I've never played any of the DLCs so anything I said about the characters was only within the context of the main game. From what I'm hearing, it sounds like the DLC changes a lot of that characterization in weird ways.
  16. I Had A Random Thought...

Instead of working for the last couple hours, I decided to browse through this entire thread all over again. I didn't reread every post, just skimmed over them. Several times I forgot the posts were months old and almost replied to them.
  17. Idle Food - Cooking!

I used to use premade seasoning (I liked Omaha Steak seasoning in particular) but right now I'm working on coming up with my own blend. It's an ongoing experiment.
  18. Idle Thumbs 156: The Holo-Violator

While listening to Jake talk about the different things that Disney now own, the concept of a new Kingdom Hearts with Darth Vader, Mickey, Iron Man, Cloud, and whatever other thing they wanted to throw in there occurred to me. I got kind of grossed out by the thought.

Try telling that to portions of the internet. Despite being one of those nerds who will point out inconsistencies, I also know that in the end most of the time they don't really matter so I'm not bothered by "canon" ceasing to exist. I do sympathize with JonCole's position that they're basically taking a potentially rich source and throwing it all away to tell their own potentially terrible story. I would likely be upset at someone telling me that something I enjoyed as a kid was basically null and void because the official source said so, but I don't think I'm invested in anything like that.
  20. Idle Food - Cooking!

Yup. Totally agree. I also cook steak the same way and I believe that I got it from Alton Brown too. Getting a cast iron skillet was worth it for steak alone. As for the stick blender, I mostly use it to make smoothies with frozen fruit on warm days and the occasional other thing.
  21. Idle Sugar

Jake told me to get Big Hunk for Sean. I assume that's this and not...something else.
  22. Idle Sugar

No I got that. I just meant that sponsorships don't necessarily come with an unlimited supply of free goodies and I didn't know if they had independently subscribed or if Nature Box just like sending them extra stuff. I don't want to double up on something they already get.
  23. Idle Food - Cooking!

I also want a sous vide machine but that's just a little too impractical at the moment. One of my favorite things about my new house is my kitchen. I finally have a gas stove and I love it so much. I'm kind of a sucker for kitchen gadgets that I sadly don't use enough. I currently have a toaster oven, deep fryer, slow cooker, stick blender, a freezer chest, electric kettle, double boiler/steamer, and rice cooker (which I do use all the time cause I make rice with everything). What I really need at the moment is a good chef's knife, my current one is old and has chips in the blade.
  24. Android Games

The UI for DoggCatcher has gotten a few updates and changes over the years so you may be remembering an older version. Also the device syncing is currently in beta, so it technically does exist but not publicly yet. It definitely does the rest of those things though. I'd say it's worth a look with the free trial.
