  1. Meh, I have other things I'd rather see first. Like I said I'm not exactly eager for more Trek right now. I might try to binge it all at once sometime in the future though.
  2. Discovery is only (legally) available in the US on CBS's streaming service. The rest of the world gets it on Netflix (except for Canada). There's nothing on CBS that I want to see other than Discovery so I'm reluctant to sign up just for one show.
  3. I have yet to watch any Discovery because 1) I wasn't super interested in another Star Trek thing. I still like Star Trek but I'm not exactly ravenous for more of it. 2) I have no desire to sign up for yet another streaming service, especially for one show 3) Even ignoring 1 and 2 I have no free time anyway Somewhat tangentially related, has anyone seen The Orville? It's a Star Trek-like comedy on Fox starring Seth MacFarlane, creator of Family Guy. I admit to being mildly curious about it.
  4. Stargate

We should do a forum Stargate rewatch.
  5. Stargate

Universe never really clicked with me. I don't dislike it, but I don't like it the same way I do SG-1 (and to a lesser extent Atlantis). Probably because it had too much of a BSG vibe and I never liked Battlestar.
  6. Left 4 Thumbs - The Homethumbing 2

While I would love to be the one to kick off another season of L4D co-op goodness, I'm not going to be a reliable point of contact for the foreseeable future. Hopefully someone else can step up.
  7. Stargate

I never watched MacGyver so I had no RDA feelings one way or the other pre-SG1. Jack O'Neill (two L's) was great though so I quickly became a fan. Season 8 felt like a bit of a low point since he was mostly out the door at that point but I love Ben Browder so much I got over it fast. I really like the last two seasons of the show, in some ways more than the first eight. I never much liked the Goa'uld or the Replicators as villains but I loved the Ori. Thematically they were just as silly and preposterous as the others but in terms of actual plot they were such a more legitimate threat.
  8. Babysitting a 10 year old version of yourself was the basic plot to the 2000 movie Disney's The Kid. Jake is Bruce Willis. The illusion of control reminded me of a Kotaku story about how claw machine games are rigged. It doesn't matter how well you align the claw, only a certain number of times will the machine actually apply enough pressure to successfully grab the prize. Your odds of winning are predetermined. The thing Jake was describing inside a toaster is a bimetallic strip. It's two pieces of different types of metal that expand at different rates when heated or cooled. The strips are attached together so that when they're both exposed to the same temperature, the strip bends because the metals expand at different rates. This can be used to open or close a contact, making a switch. They're a pretty common type of mechanical temperature switch. One place you've probably used it (besides a toaster) is in analog thermostats with an adjustable dial or meter.

It's mechanically the same but the framing as a competitive game changes it a lot. Playing against another team of humans I always feel like there's some driving force to "win", especially since they put a score in. I think the score is meaningless but it's still a presentation of which team is better. It's fine if people like that but I think it's a different experience than pure co-op which is the one I prefer. Plus what Twig said.
  10. Left 4 Thumbs - The Homethumbing 2

I'm with Twig and sclpls. While playing as the zombies is fun for a while, the emphasis on teamwork and cooperation is what really draws me to games like this. The zombie side requires some teamwork too, but it's more of a single moment when planning a coordinated strike vs the constant ongoing teamwork required by the survivors. And the scoring was always completely worthless to me. L4D isn't about "winning" by the numbers, its about that experience you get when you're working together with your buds. I never liked that scoring was even a thing. That said, I do agree with the parts about the general design of 1 v 2. I prefer the original campaigns over the new ones (while also agreeing that Heavy Rain is great). I also like the original survivors more.
  11. Left 4 Thumbs - The Homethumbing 2

L4D2 has all the maps from L4D1, including the original survivors where appropriate. It implements all the mechanical changes instituted in 2 such as fixing the melee spam and adds the new content such as the new special infected and weapons. They even recorded new voice lines for the callouts. If you want to replay vanilla L4D1 without the L4D2 additions, there's a mutator that can do that. In a way it can be preferable to do that since the levels weren't designed to accommodate the newer specials. No Mercy in particular can be quite deadly since the Charger and Jockey can take you off the roof into certain death.
  12. Elite Force was very video gamey and not particularly consistent with Star Trek. For example, you have health and armor like other shooters of the era as well as a huge arsenal of weapons you can carry all at once (the in game explanation for this was they were stored in a personal transporter buffer which I thought was pretty clever but flies in the face of a lot of Trek). I do remember really loving being able to walk around the ship. The sequel to the game places you on the Enterprise E but I never played it so I'm not sure if you can walk around. I still want to know if Danielle has seen The Peacekeeper Wars.
  13. Left 4 Thumbs - The Homethumbing 2

Once upon a time this forum engaged in regular games of L4D. Maybe its time to revive that. Is the interest just in co-op or is there desire for vs as well?
  14. The Big FPS Playthrough MISSION COMPLETE

If you're looking specifically for more co-op, Co-optimus is probably the Steam curator to follow. Also I've just realized I own Sanctum 2 but not Sanctum.
  15. Thumb Fortress 2

I have a brief window of opportunity on Thursday (Sept. 28) we can try if anyone's available (namely Ben). I'll try to get on as soon as I get home, around 5-6 my time (UTC-4).
  16. The Big FPS Playthrough MISSION COMPLETE

It didn't occur to me until just now but Sanctum has co-op. I wish I realized this the other day when I was looking for things we both own as I have the game as well. Maybe we can do this sometime. I have very little time with it myself so it would be interesting to give it a try.
  17. Left 4 Thumbs - The Homethumbing 2

If the characters/weapons aren't in the map itself, they can probably be found in the workshop individually. I have reskins for almost every character, weapon, and item in the game.
  18. Left 4 Thumbs - The Homethumbing 2

    Considering L4D2 contains L4D1, I'd say 2
  19. The Big FPS Playthrough MISSION COMPLETE

I've posted in both the L4D and TF2 multiplayer threads so if anyone is interested go there and we'll see what we can get going.
  20. Thumb Fortress 2

@Ben X and I have been trying to get together to play some TF2 MvM co-op. To really maximize the experience, it would be ideal to get a group of 6 to not only have a full team but also ensure we don't get unwanted randoms. Anyone out there interested in busting some bots?
  21. Left 4 Thumbs - The Homethumbing 2

There's been some discussion recently about playing some L4D so I thought I'd throw it out here to see how much interest there is before we attempt scheduling.
  22. I went to a Safety Town as a kid. I was always jealous that I never got to be a "driver" and roll around the fake streets in a big wheel.
  23. The Big FPS Playthrough MISSION COMPLETE

I think there are L4D mods that can allow for 8 player co-op but I imagine we'd probably need someone to be the server host. I only have 36 hours according to Steam but I probably have a lot more if you count the Xbox 360. We should move discussion this to a multiplayer thread.
  24. The Big FPS Playthrough MISSION COMPLETE

I'm bummed I missed L4D. I actually ended up with some time available right as you were playing but I didn't want to interrupt. Afterwards Ben and I discussed trying to get some TF2 co-op organized but it's going to be quite a challenge. You really need at least 4 people to make it work. And I'm not sure you can do private games without someone hosting or buying a Tour of Duty ticket (the normal mode to the game is free, buying a ticket lets you join the official servers for one game and rewards you with special cosmetic items upon completion). Of course if we have a full party of 6 we don't need to worry about uninvited guests.
  25. Stargate

I think the movie's fine. Not great but not terrible. I remember when I first started watching SG1, I was really surprised that there was a series based on Stargate. I thought it was an odd property to start a TV series about but hey whatevs. Stargate Origins is a 10 episode web series that is a prequel to both the movies and shows. The main character is Catherine Langford, the daughter of the man who first discovered the Stargate and appeared in the film and SG1 (played by different actresses). Originally they were going to make a new movie trilogy that would be direct sequels to the film and ignore the shows but then someone changed their mind and a web series is getting made instead.
