  1. Hawken, or: Fuck Me, Mech Games Are BACK!

I find nothing intrinsically wrong with the F2P model, but I recently got into the SMNC beta and was super disappointed to find they're doing it the Wrong Way. Hopefully Hawken does it the right way. (The right way, of course, being no actual GAME content locked behind arbitrary grind/money walls, and only selling cosmetic stuff in the store. If I like a game enough, I'm more than willing to purchase cosmetic items. But I will never, ever purchase gameplay item. Every time I say that, it strikes me as a really odd thing to say. Why would I defend [subjectively] worthless cosmetic item microtransactions, and shit all over gameplay-related microtransactions? ...And yet I still am 100% serious about it. I think it's a really shitty practice to encourage people to buy stuff just so they can Get It Sooner.) That was a long parenthetical. It's not even really a parenthetical anymore, now that I've finished. Oh well.

The one about teal and orange, I expect.
  3. DOTA 2

Bad game after bad game today. I think I need to take a break. Even when my team wins, I'm still awful and contribute nothing. Worst.

I've been rewatching Stargate SG-1 with my roommate recently. A little over halfway through the first season now. Man I love Stargate. So cheesy. So fun. It's kind of a bit jarring, though, how much less... competent everyone is, compared to later seasons (and the other two series). Like, they have no idea what's going on anywhere. Now: "The fuck is this nanotech bullshit, yo." Later: "I'll just reprogram it to do what we want. Yay."
  5. DOTA 2

Those are the worst. It's easy to ignore them when they're just some random person on the internet, though. Unfortunately, one of the people I regularly play with is like that. Not only will he blame everyone else for everything that goes wrong... He also never gracefully accepts criticism. If ANYONE criticizes him, no matter how nice they might be about it - granted, most Dota players aren't nice about criticisms - he'll blow up at them. (Sometimes I wonder why I play with him. Which is why I haven't lately.)
  6. Life

You don't need to have a paying subscription for someone to randomly steal it. Had several friend get long-latent accounts hacked. It's weird.
  7. DOTA 2

I've got a positive win ratio, as well, though I'm not sure how I've managed it. I sometimes feel like I never win. (Not been a problem lately, though.) Last night I played a game with a frequent Dota 2 buddy and I thought we were for sure going to lose about 35 minutes in. They had two of our barracks down, and successfully pushed all the way to our ancient and got those two towers down not long after that. We kept defending, though. FOUR TIMES we wiped out their entire team. I usually died, making sure to get my Venomancer ultimate off after venomous gale (and already having six plague wards down because I always had plenty of time to see them coming and set up). We managed to make a huge comeback and win it at 70 minutes. O: At one point we were in their base and bounty hunter tried to backdoor us so I TP'd back and scared him off. It helped that our carries were better late-game than theirs. We had Riki, Lifestealer, Viper. They had Doombringer, Bounty Hunter, and... uh... I forget the third. I was the only one who wasn't level 25 by the end. I was only 19. Haha. I spent a lot more time defending and setting up wards than I normally do. I'm usually really aggressive with Veno. Didn't really have a choice, though, I suppose.

www.steamcommunity.com/id/twig/ My current name, which changes frequently, on random whims, is "skate butt". Hem-hem.
  9. DOTA 2

I don't usually get Dagon. In fact, I had never gotten it before. But it was fun bursting people down from full health to none all by myself. Soloing Axe as Lion? YES PLEASE. X: Part of the reason I did well enough to have that gold is thanks to my lane partner. Lion/Sven is the best lane.
  10. DOTA 2

Well, like Is aid, I don't play ES. But my friend, who plays a lot of initiators (it's pretty much his only good role, though he will often think he's good at carries, too), always gets a scepter on him (and Sand King). Only heroes I play that need scepter are... well, none, I think. But I always get one on Venomancer, unless there are no other supports on our team. Veno's ult is too good to not upgrade. UU: I did get it on Lion yesterday, though. Along with a level 5 Dagon. SO FUN. (We were, uh, stomping the enemy team, obviously.)
  11. DOTA 2

You cannot buy things from the secret shop without either you or the courier being there, no. It's kind of a toss-up whether or not Agahnim's is worth it. You should never buy it on a hero that DOESN'T receive an ultimate upgrade from it, of course. There are a few where it's generally not worth it unless you are literally swimming in gold... Examples of a couple where it's pretty much mandatory, if the game goes on long enough: Earthshaker, Dark Seer. Earthshaker's ultimate is one of the best initiations in the game, when combined with a Blink Dagger. It does damage based on the amount of units, friendly or hostile, that are in the area of effect surrounding Earthshaker. So it's really good against, say, Broodmother, or Nature's Prophet. The scepter increases damage enough to make it worth working toward, once you have your Blink Dagger. (Or so I'm told - I don't play Earthshaker.) Dark Seer's ultimate can completely turn a game around, because it virtually doubles your attack power before the scepter, and triples it after the scepter. Before scepter, it puts down a wall that makes a copy of any enemy hero that walks through it, doing 90% of their autoattack damage. AFTER the scepter, it ALSO makes a copy of any FRIENDLY heroes. It is... fucking amazing. There are also many heroes where it's really not necessary. Lich, for example, is better off spending money to better support the team. He goes for Mekansm first, then anywhere else from there that will help the team more. Unfortunately, there's not really an easy way to know if it's worth it or not, other than experience and reading some guides.
  12. Nintendo 3DS

Yes, you may laugh at that. And yeah I suppose that would be the best way. Let's hope! There's also some third-party pinball game, IIRC. I never owned a DSi, though, so I'm just going off of hearsay.
  13. Nintendo 3DS

If you'd asked me a year ago, I'd have been pretty confident in their stubbornness to NOT let us transfer purchases. But now I'm definitely much more optimistic. My biggest worry is that I'll need to keep my Wii until I have a Wii U, to physically transfer the purchases. I'm hoping they come up with a more elegant solution than that, but... I don't know. There are some DSi purchases that cannot be transferred to 3DS. I don't really know why.
  14. Nintendo 3DS

Yeah it's all a bit of a mystery at the moment, but it's one that gives me a bit of hope. I wonder if there's any chance in hell of them going back and allowing us to do link our Wii purchases with the new account. I'd hate to lose all my VC games. And, hell, I'd have purchased a whole hell of a lot more of 'em by now if I was more confident in the security of my purchases from Wii to Wii U.
  15. DOTA 2

It's not Lich, as he's already in the game, and also he's a pure support hero (and probably one of the easiest in the game). Dota 2 doesn't yet have all heroes from the original Dota, but it will, eventually. There is no skeleton-summoning hero in Dota 2, yet. I never played the original (except once with my friend a long, long time ago), so I don't know any of the heroes.

  17. Life

10-mile run a day. Geez. I'm horribly, horribly out of shape. Have been pretty much my entire life. But I started running recently, and for the first time ever I almost ran a full mile without giving up! I made it to .9 according to the treadmill thing. (I'm actually running for time, rather than distance, until I can reliably run for 20 minutes without dying, but it's nice to see that number, anyway.) That is easily a record for me, as sad as it is. Even when I was a kid, and we'd do the mile-run in PE, I'd walk over half the mile. This time, I stopped not because of pain or exhaustion, but because it was getting too hard to breathe. Although once I did stop I realized how exhausted I actually was, and also maybe not being able to breathe as easily has to do with being exhausted, in the way that running exhausts me, anyway. Hmph. On the plus side, my shins no longer hurt after running, which is what has always made me quit in the past. That is good. It's encouraging to me that I'm actually noticeably getting better. X: (It also helps that my friend is dragging me along, even though he's undeniably in better shape than me.) Now I just need to start eating better. Which shouldn't be a problem, except that I like the taste of things that are bad for me and I dislike the taste of things that are good for me. How terrible. At least I'm already ahead of a lot of people in that I don't drink sugary drinks. Pretty much exclusively water - although I do drink apple cider or hot chocolate or milk every now and then.
  18. Nintendo 3DS

Yes, please. I've replayed OoT at least ten times (and I think I don't ever want to again, although I might do a Master Quest run just the one more time on my 3DS at some point in the future - possibly as a no-heart run, since I've never done that), but only ever played MM the once, despite liking it more. I'd like to amend this in the prettiest, most modern way possible.

As a random aside, was Pirates 4 really bad? I liked the first three quite a bit (I find most of the reasons people hate the third movie to be... absurd), so I was interested in the fourth, but I never saw it. U:
  20. Id's Rage

I got it by trading away some coal, and boy am I glad I didn't pay for it. I think it's slightly less than a game. It is just so bland in everything it does. I might be able to enjoy it on a pure mindless-shooter level if said shooting wasn't overshadowed by driving. I swear I've spent more time driving than I have shooting. I mean, I suppose some of that is my fault, as I am taking the time to do the races. But still. It's just so dull. I almost want to say they tried to be Borderlands and failed. At least it's pretty. Those environments are kind of great for being just a bunch of rocks, I think. I guess the best part is I have an ATi card and I waited long enough after release that I'm not suffering at all for it.
  21. Movie/TV recommendations

I wasn't really responding to anything he said. I just saw the name Rose Tyler, looked at the title of the thread I was reading, and felt I was safe in expressing my utter distaste for the character. The Amy/Rory combo is fantastic. I love those two so much. (I think I might be done with them, though. I look forward to new companions.)
  22. Movie/TV recommendations

i fucking hate rose tyler I'm sorry. I just had to say that. I thought I liked her at one point, but as it turns out, nope, I hate her and if she ever shows up in Doctor Who again I will be............. upset I take it back I'm not sorry. I hate herrrrrrrr.

I really enjoy both the Sherlock Holmes series and the movies. I enjoy the series more for the story and whatnots, although some of the "shelock is so smart!" stuff goes overboard. (His Mind Palace, in particular, was too much.) I enjoy the movies more for just being... fun, in general. So, my question: Is Sherlock really that wacko-nuts in the books? I keep meaning to read them, but I never really thought of him as a crazy, eccentric kind of guy from the various references I've received in pop culture. I expect he's going to be a bit manic, but is he really that bad?

I'm adding 33 more votes for Saints Row: The Third so now it's a non-issue. :3
