Hahaha, are you kidding me. I've explained multiple times what I wish it was, and also that I'm not even upset that it isn't what I wish it was. Just because you don't like my criticisms doesn't make them invalid. You're directing your wild and unnecessary anger at the wrong guy. Calm your beard.
  2. Feminist Frequency

Hey, that's a completely logical analog to discussing female tropes in video games and why they're bad.
  3. Internet Comics

Nice! I like all three of those, been reading 'em for a while. Paranatural in particular is one of those I rank very highly. Art so dynamic and fun! U: I REALLY SHOULD GO THROUGH MY LIST OF WEBCOMICS AND PRUNE THAT SHIT. I READ WAY TOO MANY. In the meantime, here's two I like. Namesake. It's one of those "the stories are real" kinda things, but this one has a nice twist from the norm in focusing on Oz as its first example. False Positive. It's a bunch of short stories (in comic form), usually horror or surreal in theme, sometimes just weird for the sake of weird.

Man, did I miss a couple pages of the thread? I thought I'd been following along pretty steadily, but I honestly don't remember anyone providing a counter-example to prove that it's not a problem after all. I feel like... I don't even know what's real anymore. This thread is dumb. ):

Uh, what kind of bass-ackwards interpretation are you responding to. You offer counterexamples to show people, "hey, this is how to do it right", not to say, "hey, the industry's okay, don't worry about it". To never acknowledge the people doing it right is a foolish choice. Also I don't like your implication that a thorough analysis of the state of the industry (no matter how narrow the context) shouldn't include aspects from every side of the argument. That's not how critical analysis works...
  6. Torment: Tides of Numenera

With the first video, sure. But every subsequent update revealed more and more of the ideas driving it and showed more and more real, actual stuff. Barring the initial hiccup (and the atrociously-timed layoffs, man that was awful), I believe the Wildman Kickstarter was doing it RIGHT. Every update got me more and more hyped. But okay, temporarily ignoring Wildman, how about the more recent Death, Inc? They had a good start, and it looked pretty far along, looked like it could be a lot of fun, etc. I mean, I could list a ton of examples. Sure, Kickstarter is great, but it's definitely absolutely 100% true that nostalgia is an almost-universal key element to getting way more money than you ever dreamed. Also, I feel like Wildman WAS a good enough idea, it just wasn't, you know. Nostalgic. It was too new. Had it been branded Dungeon Siege: A Sequel with a Twist (which he didn't have the rights to, obviously), I'm willing to bet it would've at least reached its funding. Probably wouldn't have been a Torment - Dungeon Siege has never had that kind of fly - but man. Like I said... I just wish people were more open to NEW SHIT. I've looked at the top funded Kickstarter video game projects more than once, trying to convince myself that maybe there is some hope, but no, nostalgia is easily the number one common factor. If there are two legitimate criticisms about the Wildman pitch, it's that: 1) He was shooting too big. I feel like the project could've been scaled back to a much smaller idea, and then built on from there in the future, if the base game proved successful, and 2) Unfortunately, he was betting the success of his company on the success of the Kickstarter. That was a foolish thing to do. sorry for derailing i'll shut up now yay torment boo the majority of kickstarter backers U:

I agree. I didn't really feel it was fair to criticize the video for something as superficial as this, but I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way.
  8. Feminist Frequency

Probably not surprisingly, that was one of my favorite moments. U: Also, I hope she offers some counterexamples in part two. "Here's some people doing it right" or whatever.

It doesn't have to be funny and entertaining, but yes of course it has to be engaging. If being funny/entertaining is what it takes, then go for it, but that's not the only avenue for engagement. Being engaging is what grabs people's attention. It's what makes them come back for more. It's what makes them care. If a professor of literature lectures in a deadpan voice, only the most dedicated of students are going to retain any of that information. And that's in an environment where learning is the entire reason for its existence. In the case of this video, if the goal is to reach new people and share the problems of the video game industry's representation of the female gender, well, how are you going to reach most new people if the first video they see bores them to tears? And before you jump down my throat, defending the video and saying it isn't dull, well, that wasn't the point of this post. I thought it was boring, but obviously plenty of people here liked it well enough, so that's definitely something. I only take issue with your implication that a series like this, with the goal of introducing the topic to new people who maybe weren't aware of the problem, shouldn't have to be engaging.
  10. Tomb Raider

I'm playing on PC and I definitely had an issue (with a fucking wolf it must've killed me a dozen times FUCK THAT WOLF) where the "alternate left and right" QTE went babonkers if I did it too fast. That is, if I pressed left before I released right, and vice versa. Once I realized that was happening, the QTEs got easier. I don't mind them so much, despite that, but I'm not a fan of them by any means.

There are a few moments where you see a girl, although the game never explains who she is (or even if she's your sister or just a friend or what), and ALSO I think when you see her before the end of the game she's just a trap? Or she immediately disappears or something? The game never explains anything. Why are other children trying to murder you? WHAT'S HAPPENING. The only thing clear is you're in limbo, because it's the name of the game. Anyway, that's neither here nor there.
  12. Feminist Frequency

It's cool! I'm sorry for being unclear and jokey. U:

Oh god no. There's no need to go around assuming I'm the worst human being on the planet. "That's not to say I don't appreciate what she's doing and why it's necessary." I said that earlier. My brain comment was a slight at people who don't seem to realize this is a thing. The people who are like "yo this ain't a problem it never happens". It's so incredibly obvious that it's also incredibly bizarre how there exist people who don't get it. She stated fact after fact after fact and did very little actual analysis of those facts. Because they're facts! How do people not see this shit when it's right in there fact every day of their life? It's bizarre. Aaaaaand repeat in various other paraphrasing sentences ad nauseam. But that doesn't mean I think less of the video, or that I think it's not necessary. (It also doesn't change that I think it's a really boring video.)

    lol wat
  15. Animated Shorts

Saw this thread, was like, "has anyone posted The Reward it's my most recent favorite" and yeah it's the first one in the first post. HOWEVER I AM STILL POSTING BECAUUUUSE There's a Kickstarter to make a series out of the world. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1862188728/the-reward-tales-of-alethrion U: U:
  16. Torment: Tides of Numenera

I'm mad this thing got two million dollars in two days and Wildman couldn't get half its funding in one month. Well I'm not actually mad I just wish people were more open to things that weren't giant nostalgia bombs. Not that I have anything against nostalgia bombs; I've backed quite a few of them myself. But goddamnit.
  17. Feminist Frequency

That's pretty much my main issue with the video. There wasn't any... discussion. It was all rote stuff (whatever that even means, don't judge me). I was hoping it would be more analysis and less facts number 1-5. Maybe part two will be what I want. Not gonna write off the series, yet. We'll see. Maybe it's as simple as I said: this video just isn't made for people like me. It's made for people who are new to the idea of... well, using their brain.
  18. Feminist Frequency

I think this video was not for me, because I am already kind of aware of everything she was talking about, and it was so boring I didn't want to finish. I forced myself to, anyway, but I didn't WANT to. That's not to say I don't appreciate what she's doing and why it's necessary, but I wish it wasn't so dull to watch.
  19. Feminist Frequency

This is not a slight on the video or the worthiness of the video or the lady speaking or ANYTHING but goddamn I hate large hoop earrings. They are so distracting. Okay I will watch the video now.
  20. Internet Comics

I really like Prequel! Could never get into MSPA.
  21. $35?! Jesus Christ. I want it, 'cause it looks way better than dumb Lina with hair. Guess I'll wait for a drop.
  22. Half-Life 3

Mhm. The structure certainly isn't for everyone.
  23. Half-Life 3

Pretty sure Kim Swift left because she wanted to be in The Person in Charge of a video game, and that sort of thing doesn't necessarily fly at Valve. At least, those are the between-the-lines implications that I remember from around the time she left. And that's a perfectly acceptable reason to leave, as far as I'm concerned. Valve is my number one dream company, but I also sort of dread the idea of working there (partly because man am I really smart enough and partly because I want to be The Person in Charge of a video game). More specifically, I remember reading that Kim had some ideas for Portal 2 that were not implemented, and that upset her. But that memory is much more hazy, and probably was just a rumor. I'm not really inclined to believe she's that petty without hearing it straight from the horse's mouth! Well, that and Unity, etc. being free/cheap and incredibly easy to use. That kind of thing has essentially replaced modding.
  24. Half-Life 3

Whatever else I may disagree with, I definitely agree that I'd prefer a Valve that was more willing to ship flawed products. I used to be a huge Blizzard fan, but that's fallen off as they now take forever to release anything ever, and it all falls into the same three franchises they've been working on since forever. I guess I give Valve a bit of a pass because they release games [that I care about] more often. Also TF2 and Dota 2 are by far my most played games that aren't MMOs. Combined, they might even top my most-played MMO (which is, somewhat ironically, considering my previous statements, WoW).
  25. Half-Life 3

That's absurd. People like Valve because of their games and Steam in general. It's the same mentality as that behind Blizzard love, but with the bonus of Steam. Sure, the Steam sales are great, and no doubt contribute to a good deal of the good will, but so does everything else about Steam. It's a great service, period. It ain't perfect, but whatever, man. I'd also be willing to bet that the large majority of people, when asked why they love Valve, would not list Steam as their number one reason. And, in fact, there are people who love Steam that don't consider themselves Valve fans. They're very closely associated in The Real World, but inside the people's collective brainholes, there is a distance between Valve the Game Developer and Valve the Steam Curator. To a certain extent, anyway.
