  1. OH SHIT. Okay I remember hints of this happening a few episodes ago and had begun to think it was a fever dream. Now I'm less frustrated with the constant "WE CAN'T TALK ABOUT DOTA" on the main 'cast. I listen now.
  2. Feminism

It seemed to me more like those were two SEPARATE subtropes of the overall damsel trope. They could be related, but in this case, I don't think she was actually trying to say they were. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's the impression I got from the way she presented things! She had a bunch of examples of women "asking for it", followed by a bunch of examples of women not actually asking for it, but being "saved by violence". Both of those things are true, separately, but I feel like the theme of the former examples doesn't necessarily apply to the latter examples. They're not mutually exclusive, sure, but none of the examples she provided for the "saved by violence" scenario actually had the woman "asking for it". At least, not that I remember, the next day. If that makes sense? At any rate, to address your main point: I've seen plenty of situations where a guy also "asks for it". I know, I know, history of men vs. history of women, but I really disagree with the assertion that this has anything to do with gender (beyond women-are-weak!). The real thing here, I think, is that most protagonists are male, and it's super easy(/lazy/boring) to make the protagonist's story more TRAGIC OH ME OH MY by choosing the significant other as the victim. Of course, I say that, but I'm sure daughter-danger happens much more often than son-danger. But like I said in my first post, I think that's just more indicative of the "women are weak" bullshit than anything else. The main thing is: I agree it's a problem, but not necessarily for the same reason. Hah.
  3. Feminism

Jeeeesus. I still don't like how the first one was delivered. Watching this one now! The fuck do I care, it's twenty minutes, and maybe I'll get something out of it this time! This episode was much better! I liked when she just straight up laughed at the wife-in-arm scenario. It was a very cheesy delivery and pleased me greatly. U: I'm not entirely convinced that the kill-transformed-lady-to-save-lady is really what she proposes it is, though.I feel like saying it promotes domestic violence is, uh, ugh. That borders on the "video games perpetuate violence" argument, which, eh, well. Sure, in the small percentage of people that both can't separate virtual reality from reality AND have the potential and/or tendency for violence against women (or anyone else for that matter), that might have some effect, but those people are mentally fucked, anyway. It's not really fair to just blanket it as "this makes domestic violence seem A-OK!" I'm also not entirely convinced that the line "So, now, I'll take from you!" followed by shooting a dude's lady friend implies that said lady friend is the dude's property, or an object that has been taken from the dude... I think it's certainly indicative of the larger trend of women being the oh-so-weak-and-vulnerable, male-protagonist-driving plot device, but to say that implies the lady belongs to the man is reallllly stretching it. I'm also not saying that THAT particular trope doesn't exist in video games, because I'm sure it undoubtedly does. Can't think of any off the top of my head, but whatever. Point is, she chose a bad example to just off-hand mention it. Still! Overall a much stronger video. Maybe just because it wasn't all the immediately obvious stuff like in the first one. I hope she stays a bit more focused and doesn't try to lump in a trope that, in my opinion, I guess, doesn't really fit. I'm excited for the next one, now. (I'm only posting about what I disagree with because, well, if I listing all the things I agreed with, this post would be a lot longer.)
  4. Week-by-week, I go from loving to hating to loving to hating to loving Dota 2, and yet I never want to stop because it scratches an itch that has never been scratched before. It's like I'm a sports fan all of a sudden. Hold me. Fuck yeah video games. I recently finished Max Payne 3, and I don't give a fuck what a bunch of people I know say, that game was rad, go go Max, you whiny, noir-wannabe, bullet-dodging, bullet-timing son of a bitch. I love you. Fuck yeah video games. I started up Waking Mars last night, and holy shit, I am learning about an ecosystem that has existed for apparently millions of years, in perfect equilibrium until I broke everything FOR THE SAKE OF SCIENCE. Now I'm balls-deep and have to continue destroying-by-creating for the sake of survival. Fuck yeah video games.
  5. Video Games With Dynamic Music

I have always so desperately wanted a video game with dynamically-generated music that emulates Looney Tunes, etc. GODDAMN. Various video games have minor elements of that old style of music. Running up stairs with slowly-ascending notes (or at least making you think it, like tegan's example of Super Mario 64). There are a handful of games coming out every year that use music to generate levels. Why do people so rarely ever try to go in the opposite direction? Grrr. An aside: Wowowow, typing out the words "Super Mario 64" suddenly made me want to play that game again. I have no idea why, but the physical act of typing it out just brought out all sorts of nostalgic feelings in me. I feel weird. I was literally just talking about it about a week ago, and deriding it for being Old and Not As Good as Sunshine/Galaxy, and yet here I sit, wanting nothing more than to play Super Mario 64. GODDAMN. The human brain is a bizarre creature.
  6. Curiosity – What's Inside the Cube?

I'm jealous. Why don't I get to be an omnipotent video game troll?
  7. «Game Shop»

That was lame. Actually the MORE LIKE GROSS O'CLOCK was the only part that made me laugh 'cause it was just so completely stupid. As intended, I think?
  8. Video Games With Dynamic Music

I am in a persistent state of sadness that SSX isn't available on PC.
  9. I just won a game against a Magnus, Witch Doctor, Axe, Puck, and Luna. The reason we won is because our Ursa bought a BKB first. He was smart, and played well. Magnus was mad at the end and said, completely legit, I'm pretty sure, "It's random draft. If we'd have picked a team with hard disables we would've won." The things people say when they're sore about losing.
  10. Plug your shit

Wel, it did with CDs, as I recall. I remember games costing $70. Then PS1 came out and suddenly they weren't $70 anymore.
  11. Life

Hurray money! I just filed a police report for the first time in my life. For my pick-pocketed 3DS. It'll never go anywhere. I mostly did it because apparently having a copy of a police report is the only way to get new digital copies of all the games you purchased from Nintendo's eShop thing. I don't plan to buy a new one anytime soon, but I figured I might as well. Hopefully they don't have some stupidly arbitrary time limit on giving me new copies. Still, I've never gone to the police for anything. And I still haven't, technically! I did it all online. Hmmm.
  12. Nextbox 1080: The Reckoning

You don't have to worry about losing cartridges, but when it's Nintendo and your entire system gets stolen, you do have to worry about losing literally all of your games at once! Fortunately, everyone else is much less stupid about handling digital goods accounts.
  13. Armikrog: Earthworm Neverhood 2?

OSC's game was Shadow Complex, or something like that? I had no idea about TenNapel's bigotry until I looked it up today. Eurgh. Just as bad as OSC. Fortunately, I'm pretty capable of ignoring bigotry for the sake of enjoying art. Sometimes that makes me feel a little sick on the inside.
  14. Armikrog: Earthworm Neverhood 2?

The Neverhood is a game I have always wanted to play and always been super disappointed that IT IS UNAVAILABLE ON ANY DIGITAL DELIVERY SYSTEM, C'MOOOOON. Earthworm Jim was fantastic. (The sequel, not so much, but hey whatever.) I'm interested. Also this new trend of announcing Kickstarters is so hilarious to me. Makes sense, though. A Kickstarter with a strong start is more likely to succeed, and the strongest start is probably going to happen if you make people anticipate it before it even begins.
  15. Life

There are vaporizers or whatever that are better for your throat/lungs, right? I am totally out of my element here. Yeah, sure, definitely. The entire reason I don't, though, is because it's not legal for me to do so (although, as I said above, I probably could make it legal with very little effort). I have nothing against weed whatsoever, but that's enough of a hindrance that I won't go out of my way. If the opportunity presented itself for a one-night-stand, as it were, I'd bite, but eh. It's not something I feel like I'm missing in my life. But it is something I'd probably actually do were it not... prohibited! Then again, I don't really drink that much, either, to be honest. I'll go out for drinks if that's what people decide they want to do, but I very, very rarely suggest it.
  16. Life

God it sounds cheap to me. San Francisco, hurrayyyy. D: Hope things turn good for you, tegan. I know I didn't say this, but I really just meant among the people I know. That said, yeah, you're probably right. SHRUG.
  17. Nextbox 1080: The Reckoning

Yeah it's fantastic. And makes me want to play Mario Party.
  18. General Video Game Deals Thread

A friend of mine swears by both. Definitely seems to prefer the second, though. I keep meaning to play them.
  19. Weird Medical Shit

I have a scar on my upper lip because when I was a small child boy, a bigger small child boy pushed me down an icy hill and I smacked my face on the pavement. It suddenly strikes me as amazing that SOMEHOW my enormous nose (it's p big) avoided damage. It also suddenly strikes me that the bigger small child boy didn't even get in trouble for it. Huh.
  20. Life

It's always amusing to discover people I know are huge into weed. It's not exactly something you can talk about, so everyone keeps it close to their chest. I feel like if it were legal, most people would prefer it to alcohol. I'm fairly certain I would! Although I've only smoked once so what do I know. U: Also I live in SF, where I've heard it's cake to get a medical license, but I don't really care enough to do so. U:
  21. Nextbox 1080: The Reckoning

I'll just be mad and anti-vote for it. ):
  22. Nextbox 1080: The Reckoning

Hahah that would be the worst thing. Also the worst thing: Mirror's Edge 2 as an Xbone exclusive. I refuse to believe even the possibility, lest my heart collapse in despair. Oh but ugh even if it does come to PC it'll be on Origin. Oh well, I guess I'm already on there... Damn.
  23. Steam Trading Card

Ahaha I am amused by the turn of this thread.
  24. Holy Christ I love gauntlet legends. I played every single one of those classes to exhaustion. Including the arbitrary clones you unlock.Damn I want gauntlet online. ):
  25. Steam Trading Card

I don't really want to make this personal, but i gotta clarify for you, Zeus. I challenge you to go reread I_Smell's posts. He's very clearly being derisive of both the system and anyone who purports to find something enjoyable within the system. Maybe he wasn't being entirely serious, but it was across the span of several posts, so it's hard not to think he's just being belligerently anti-other-opinions. You, and most other people, are not in the same category!
