I just wanna say I'm glad you guys are all cool people. U: I browsed the GAF thread about this and it made me really sad. Reading this makes me happy again.

I don't like how building new things is handled. ): It's so annoying. Just let me precisely choose exactly which tiles, please. And don't add arbitrary limits. If I want to put a street lamp right next o a bench, let me!

The booster packs exist precisely to avoid cards disappearing forever. As badges are crafted, packs are dropped.

Yeah, that's definitely disgusting. It kind of makes ME want to ragequit the internet.

I vastly preferred sailing to riding a lame horse!

He's kind of a jerk, I won't lie. It's not so much WHAT he says as it is how he says it. When he talked shit about Japanese games, it was after a super humble Japanese guy came up (at the GDC screening of Indie Game: The Movie) and was like, "I'm really proud of Japan because I can see the influence of our classic games in the games you've created. But what do you think about modern Japanese games?" (Paraphrased, obvs.) Phil responded: "They suck!" He went on to explain why, and also almost immediately apologized for how he said it, but the damage had been done. There are other examples. A lot of shit just flies off his tongue. I don't think he fully understands what he's saying until it's out, half the time. I dunno. But the real problem lies in how people react: he fucks up, and is aware of it, but it doesn't matter because everyone just jumps down his throat, dual-wielding cacti. He understandably snaps under the pressure, and that snap bounces back and forth between him and the people yelling at him until he finally just... walks away from everything, like he did here. Indie Game: The Movie makes him look like a pretty sympathetic, overly frustrated kind of dude who gets a lot of flak for stuff that's kind of out of his control. Which is absolutely true. But also not the whole story. I like Phil Fish. I just think... well, Henroid said it all for me. (Granted, everything I've said above is just my assumptions based on what I've seen from him both during his calm, calculated moments and his flame-broiled trolling.)

I also have my fingers crossed. ): Yep. But it's clear to me now they never gave a shit about what I was doing. Well, the people who decided to let me do it definitely did, but the people above them? All a numbers game. You know how it is. Money, money, money. The thing that really hurts is I'd been putting in a lot of extra hours just because I wanted to. I'd take my work laptop home and just start it up every couple nights and get like two or three hours of work done, doing things they never even asked for. Bleh.

Damn, Henroid, don't think I could agree with you any more than I do!

That's not even remotely true. There are cases of people getting refunded for busted games. You're just a big ol' baby what can't handle things you don't like. So there!! Protip: a company is allowed to make money. I think my problem is you're essentially comparing Valve to manipulate free-to-play social/mobile game developers. I've been at one of THOSE companies for the past year (before getting laid off two days ago, thank fucking god), and you're saying the same stuff I've been saying about that company since a month after I started. THOSE companies are manipulative and don't give a flying rat's ass about delivering good products, as long as they can make money. They do nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing, unless it's guaranteed to pay off in the short term. They talk a big game of striving to make the best video game they can, but really only bother to implement features as barebones as possible without driving away their whales. Gotta keep dat sweet, sweet ARPDAU as high as possible! Bonus if they can do it for cheap and do it for years straight (which they do!). That you keep accusing Valve of similar exploitative practices without acknowledging the many, many, many great things they've also done is goddamn gross - not to mention that even the "exploitative" things they do are still really cool if you bother to look at it as a fun side project instead thinking you're forced to dive headfirst into the deep side of a pool filled with landmines - and I don't know how you can tolerate any business at all with that kind of attitude.

But they might be selling you FAULTY WARES built by CHILD LABOR or maybe even STOLEN GOODS.

I failed a physics programming class because I included the wrong file in the zipped up final project. Paper was done and would've gotten me a pass, but well, I accidentally added the powerpoint presentation I'd done a week prior to the zip instead of the paper itself. The physics engine was all there and working (as specced out), bar a few bugs. Woo!

Was a sequel announced?! Oh man I'm so excited! (I assume what you actually mean is the inevitable sequel, heh.) For the record, I didn't like Uncharted (and also hated every Tomb Raider I played prior to this) but loved this game a lot a lot so fuck all y'alls!

Yeah I'm mostly optimistic, but there's always that cynic in me that worries things won't work out. It should be fine!

YO I GOT LAID OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! yay I'm applying to... Telltale (Sean totally told me I should at that Idle Thumbs meetup!), Double Fine. U: And, well, anywhere else. Also a few places in LA and Seattle. But well. I mean, I'd been considering leaving for a long while. The only thing holding me back was I really loved the people I was working with. Guess I'm not working with anyone, anymore! My apartment lease is up in a month. That's the hard thing. I don't know where I'm going to be. I don't know... what to do about that, really. Blehhhh.

Idle Thumbs 116: Ragnar Calls it Quits
Twig replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I still have a xanga (or at least did up until about a year ago was the last time I checked? because they don't delete it and the website still exists!) and sometimes I relish finding it again and laughing and laughing and laaaughing. This is not one of those times. I'll avoid it. For now. Years later, as a [college-aged] adult, I made a wordpress account when I went to Japan, to write about it, or at least try to. I like to think it's more interesting and less angsty but I know there's some real dumb livejournaly shit in there too. Weeeee. -

Why are you not just using the Steam Market? Do you never intend to use that money to buy games, or just strapped for cash? Well, whatever. My answer is: I have no clue because I'd never do anything like that. U:

Maximum disappointment confirmed - Prey gets a sequel
Twig replied to Kolzig's topic in Video Gaming
Ugh. It did look like it was going to be a great game. Now I'm sad about its cancellation all over again.
