  1. anime

I remember liking Erin, but I... don't remember much about it. Which probably says a lot more than I want it to.
  2. anime

In other news, I just finished watching this: http://www.crunchyroll.com/humanity-has-declined It's a whimsical take on the end of humanity. "Hey, we've had a good run, right? Let's just ride this last bit out. It'll be over soon!" It's got a depressing undertone, but everything on the surface is bright, colorful, and happy. Seriously bright. As in, my eyes sometimes cringe at the use of colors in this series. It's good, though. Also not always so happy. The protagonist (known as the Mediator, between fairies (aka new-humans) and humans) is a sarcastic, unenthusiastic girl. That probably makes her sound boring, but I really enjoyed her attitude. There's no real overarching plot to speak of. The plot is essentially over. Humanity is over. It's just a series of events in the Mediator's life*. Anyway, I like it a lot. *(not a major spoiler, I think, but just in case)
  3. Feminism

I see that image and laugh. But I know what you're going through because I went through it. And then one day I just decided to stop feeling like I'm part of the problem. Whenever I have a reaction to something someone good (i.e., feminists or what-have-you) says, I think about why, and identify why. I find it pretty easy to do now, although it was annoyingly difficult at first. I'm not guilty and I should not feel guilty for the things that have been drilled into me as I grew up. I'm only guilty if I choose not to try to be a better person. There are still a lot of things that trigger that kind of reaction from me, but they trigger that kind of reaction for a reason.
  4. Dark Souls(Demon's Souls successor)

I should note that RFG worked offline once I actually created the game. But I couldn't start without being online first. (And, again, that's a thing that may have been fixed! I don't know! AHHHHH!)
  5. Amy Hennig and Naughty Dog Part Ways

I definitely won't end up playing this game, precisely because it's Star Wars. Unless it's, like, really super goddamn awesome. Enough to get over the hurdle that is Star Wars.
  6. Dark Souls(Demon's Souls successor)

It purports to, but I had an issue with Red Faction: Guerrilla when I tried to play it offline. That is, it wouldn't let me, even though I'd read it should. That was many years ago, though, so hopefully it's all fixed.
  7. anime

No, probably not. But maybe! FWIW, I've always hated the GITS movies, but SAC I still completely love. Also yeah I've been really wanting to learn Japanese for a long time. I made a lot of progress during my undergrad education and when I lived in Japan, but now it's all gone, unless I really strain my brain. It's the worst. ): Honestly not sure how well just watching non-subbed anime would work for me, though.
  8. Feminism

As an aside, and unrelated to whatever else is happening in this thread, this is also the case for me. Maybe I grew up after it was a real problem, although I definitely remember people insulting me with nerd when I was a kid. But it didn't bother me. I knew I was a nerd. I actively embraced it. I still got bullied for lots of other reasons and in lots of other ways, but this one specifically never bothered me, as far as I can remember. I'm 27. Maybe I'm too young for that to have mattered. Or maybe I was just actively reclaiming the word even when I was a small child, without realizing it. Eh! Whatever. I found the thought process that just went through my brain interesting, so I thought I'd share it.
  9. Feminism

I know you were using it as an example. It just so happens that you chose a very poor example!
  10. anime

I had the same thought. I'm a little worried, but I hope that it won't ruin itself. The show ain't perfect by any stretch, but damn if I don't really love it as it is. Also, semi-related, this is the first time I've ever followed a Season of Anime as it aired (thanks Crunchyroll!), and it's weird having all these different series end at basically the same time. American TV series endings tend to cascade over a few months. Japanese seasons are apparently much more strict. Every series I watched ended within a two week period. And I think I was watching too many of them. My winners for this season are: Log Horizon, Kill la Kill, Samurai Flamenco, and Hozuki no Reitetsu. I think Samurai Flamenco had my favorite ending. It was very appropriate for the series. Also I hate Samurai Flamenco because I can't explain what makes it great without spoiling it, and also not everyone will think it's great, and they might give up early even if they would find what happens later great. Boo.
  11. Feminism

It's inherently impossible for the word "rape", with its current meaning, to have a positive connotation, as long as the act of rape is seen as a negative. (Which, of course, it always will be.)
  12. Feminism

I never said it bothered me, so please don't put words in my mouth. Thank you. All I'm saying is I don't think it's a positive word, and no amount of "I don't care, I'm using it positively anyway" has changed that, even if it's lasted the "last 20ish years", because it's still a hugely negative word.
  13. Feminism

That seems like a really arbitrary distinction to make. Why is slut a neutral descriptive word? Is it just because you WANT it to be? Was there ever a time when it WASN'T used pejoratively?
  14. I was gonna say that, but I was hoping the comedy discussion would die out. (Ironic since I was the first one to respond to Sean! Also sort of weird because aperson decided he wanted to come back again to chime in again. What is happening.) C'est la vie.
  15. Amy Hennig and Naughty Dog Part Ways

Preach it, brother. Star Wars more like Shit Wars.
  16. Feminism

I guess when you get down to it, the only thing I really have issue with is the name: "reclaim". Which is silly so I'll shut up now.
  17. Yeah, to actually express an opinion, now: I really don't think comedy is in any danger. If any type of comedy has any audience, it will never die. If the audience dies, the comedy dies with it (as with any other form of entertainment). So it's not a problem. (Also feelthedarkness was being sarcastic, I'm pretty sure!)
  18. Feminism

Right. That's exactly my point. It'll never be drained of its negative connotation, no matter how much people want it to be. I mean, maybe I'm wrong. I'd like to be. But I don't see it happening.
  19. Feminism

I understand the goal, but I don't see how it can ever be done. "Nigger", for example, has been adopted as a general term for "other person" by a subset of the African American community. But if anyone else uses it, it's still just super incredibly offensive in all ways and OH MY GOD you are going to hell!! Can a word ever be drained of its negative connotation if it was only ever negative to begin with?
  20. I like the launch trailer for the same reasons you apparently dislike it. U:
  21. Feminism

The idea of "reclaiming" a word that was only ever an insult seems really weird to me.
  22. Actually, I think some comedians do feel that way, as, for them, humor is sacred and open to all subjects all the time. The big movement to be more friendly, more inclusive, more etc. can definitely be detrimental to their career if they're the kind of comedian that thrives on being super rough and offensive. For them, it's a matter of "you have the right to be offended, but I also have the right to be offensive", where a lot of people fighting against that sort of thing don't believe in the second half of that statement when it comes to certain subjects. Though I guess if your definition of "real comedian" does not include that group of comedians, then fair enough. Well this post got a little longer than I expected. Anyway, it's not meant to be an argument for or against anything. It's just something I know definitely does happen in some circles of comedy.
  23. What would it take to make Danielle a regular host of the podcast? She's awesome. (I think I said basically the same thing last time she was on, but well whatever.)
  24. Life

I really like food and I really hate exercising. That's my biggest problem. (Actually I like some forms of exercising, like hiking and swimming and even playing basketball.)
