Smuggler's Cove is pretty rad. I will vouch for that one. I only went once (two GDC's ago when some of the thumbs meet-up crew were drunkenly chasing... one of the Thumbs who tweeted he was there, I can't even remember who!), but it blew my drunken mind. Also I love rum and they have a lot of delicious rum-based drinks.

The varied whisky family is something I know I could get into if I drank enough of it, but I don't buy it and don't run into it often enough to get used to it. Taste of, for example, Scotch is good, but it's strong.

Idle Thumbs 153: Blondie, Freckles, and Glasses
Twig replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I saw The Avengers before I saw any of the previous movies (except Captain America, I think) and I thought it was awesome and I hate superhero comics a lot! I knew virtually nothing about any of the superheroes involved, except the most basic understanding of their various superpowers. I definitely knew absolutely nothing about Loki. I'm 100% positive that watching Captain America first had no bearing on my enjoyment of The Avengers. I eventually went back and watched some of the previous movies. Thor was okay. It wasn't outright terrible, but it definitely wasn't outright good. It was a mediocre superhero movie. And I honestly forgot that it had much to do with The Avengers, although I guess now that you mention it, it's pretty obvious. I forgot about the little cube thing or whatever it was. I don't think it was all that important to what made The Avengers good. -

In which case you're just arguing semantics, in my opinion. -

I mean it's entirely possible there's some give AND some take. -

Related, but different, there is a game called Bad Rats that is completely terrible that I got as part of a bundle of video games on Steam many years ago, and it has since become a sort of joke game. Oh, Bad rats is on sale for a dollar again? Time to gift it to all my friends! Or something like that. Anyway it's completely terrible. And I hated it. But I refused to let it beat me. And so I beat it. I demolished it. The game is no more. Bad Rats is a Rube-Goldberg Machine Simulator featuring rats murdering cats over and over in bloody fashion. It is a physics-based game with nondeterministic physics. As in, if you hit play and watch the machine play out and hit stop and hit play again, it could play out significantly differently, such that it goes from couldn't-be-further-from-success to success. And sometimes the ball would roll right into the screen on the z-axis, despite the physics being "locked" to the x-y plane. -
Yeah, it's goddamn impressive. There's the first car chase scene where they drive through a fucking mall for like ten minutes, and you're like, "All right, that's our car chase quota!" And then they come back with, yeah, the longest car chase of all time. Blues Brothers 2000 is so far just an excuse to do it all over again, it seems. Except this time everyone's older and Jim Belushi's dead and unlike in the first movie when they were trying to save the orphanage they grew up in, they don't have a legitimate excuse for doing all the crazy shit. It's purely selfish reasoning on Dan Aykroyd's part. Also the first half hour of the movie takes place in a strip club. I mean, aside from some of the details, it's almost the same movie, beat for beat. Some beats are mixed around a little, but man. They are now auditioning for a Battle of the Bands hosted by a goddamn voodoo witch. WHAT. Oh also the movie features a small boy whose only purpose, as far as I can gather, is to do some sick dancing.

Christ almighty I forgot how absurdly long and ridiculously absurd the car chases in The Blues Brothers were. Incredible.

Sorry about your broken taste buds!
-
Yeah they are. Every beer tastes the same and makes me gag to even SMELL it.
-
Okay let's set the record straight here. BEER IS DISGUSTING. (I have nothing constructive to add, but since it all seems to have worked out, I feel it's okay for me to chime in about how offended I am by miffy's insinuation that I would ever drink that garbage.)

I also loved The Grand Budapest Hotel! I talked my friends here in Ohio (with whom I have not regularly Hanged for many years at this point) into seeing it with me, and they all hated it. I forgot they aren't the kind of people who like... movies. I'll probably go see the new Captain America with them, and we'll all be able to enjoy that together, unlike Grand Budapest. But man I thought it was great. The only other Wes Anderson film I've seen is The Life Aquatic, which also is maybe one of my favorite movies, and I distinctly remember all of my friends hating it back when it came out. I'm currently watching The Blues Brothers. I love this movie. Afterward, I'm going to watch Blues Brothers 2000, which by all accounts I've heard is terrible, and which I've only seen bits and pieces of on TV. But the soundtrack, I must've listened to hundreds of times. I've got to see what makes it bad. I don't have a choice! So this'll be fun.

I do like Moribito a lot, but I'm talking like straight up sword and sorcery genre garbage here! Gimme some of that! Maybe I'll look at those other two you mentioned. ... ALSO HEY GUYS I DON'T KNOW IF YOU KNEW THIS BUT MUSHISHI IS FUCKING GREAT OKAY?? OKAY!! I'm rewatching the original series, and holy shit I love it just as much now as I did then. Can't wait to get to the new stuff on CR. Speaking of Crunchyroll... They got Ping Pong, but only for everywhere but North America, apparently. Booooooo. Can Funimation and Crunchyroll just make a deal already?

I think it's just an internet thing. I used to do it all the time when I was younger. Then I stopped. -
There was a time when they were going to make the Rayman Origins editor free for everyone to use and make their own games. Ahh, but of course that didn't happen.

I think this'd be more interesting if the ship was controlled by some sort of AI, and your changes in statistics would affect the priority of different actions the AI might take. That way you could also add even more stat-modification mechanics and not have to suffer the problem Lork describes (which is a very real problem). Not sure if that'd be fun, though. Also it'd be worlds harder to code, whoa.

oh my god i had forgotten that even existed
-
Yeah I think tabacco patched it basically as soon as it became known. At least I remember him pasting something in chat about it. (I could be wrong, though. Don't trust me on this, I guess!)

I enjoy watching many of the Syfy original movies. Not all of 'em, but a decent amount. Precisely because they're terrible. -

You're right, knowing the person who made the game makes it difficult to hate the game. I think it's a terrible game. You're free to disagree. It won't change my opinion. Also, my opinion has no bearing whatsoever on the person who made the game. I find it really odd that you'd bring that up. -

If you could do that, I'd have already hated that garbage out of existence. C'est la vie! -

I Wanna Be the Guy is a fucking terrible game that everyone loves. Does that count?
