  1. Movie/TV recommendations

I agree with the hypercompetency, but I disagree pretty strongly with this! I don't think either approach is wrong. Breaking Bad works for me in part because it doesn't fall apart.
  2. Sutro Baths; aka the Rapture of San Francisco

Came in here to pimp 99% Invisible and saw that it was the reason for the thread's creation. NICE!! Love that podcast. Wish I still lived in SF or had known about it at the time I did live there. Sounds like a cool place to check out.
  3. Idle Sugar

Dried mango is great. I like dried pineapple more!
  4. Yeah! There are definitely outliers in DayZ, and I don't want to downplay their existence, but they're the minority. If you added the ability to set up shop and build a farm and stuff like that, how many people would actually embrace that? I don't think more than a few percent of the total players, if that. Although, I hear a lot of good things about Rust, in that regard. So maybe I'm wrong, I dunno.
  5. I know, I've talked and thought a lot about this exact thing with many, many different people. Everyone comes to the same conclusion. It was a game built on ignorance (not the bad kind of ignorance!) about what is and is not good design in a game structured to support a lot of people at once. It succeeded because everyone who wanted to play a "massively-multiplayer online role-playing game" had no other choice. People of all different flavors and desires were forced to exist in the same world. Griefers and anti-griefers alike. People who just wanted to mine, people who wanted to run a shop, roaming gangs of murderous monks, whatever. No one would ever make it today, and even if they did, only the minority of people, the griefers, would bother to play it, because everyone who isn't as big a fan of that kind of thing would just play WoW (or whatever else is the big game of the time). They know they don't have to deal with assholes elsewhere, so why would they willingly submit to it? It's depressing to realize that what makes Ultima Online so fascinating is precisely why it will never happen again. I mentioned EVE earlier, because a lot of people suggest it. But I don't think it's the same. The interesting stories are more about corps fighting each other, and not about individual players. That's not strictly true, as often there are key players in these massive confrontations responsible for infiltrating this or that or stealing a lot of money or whatever, but the stories never have the same kind of attraction to me as those I hear about Ultima Online. (Plus, as I said, I find EVE's core gameplay mechanics utterly boring.)
  6. Dual audio in Games (The Weaboo's Lament)

I think this is the number one problem for me. Even if the voice acting is brilliant and the translation is fantastic, it's very rare for a developer to put in the effort (through lack of funds or lack of desire, I don't know, probably a little of both?) to actually alter the cutscenes' visuals to match audio. So the writers have to fill in empty space or the voice actors have to talk really fast. It's often pretty obvious when shit goes awry, at least to me. I'd love it it everything was perfect in my native language, but I'd much rather hear the original audio because localizations are rarely even close to perfect.
  7. I wish modern MMOs were like Ultima Online, except, you know, modern. I missed out on it, and everything I hear about it is basically my dream MMO. EVE sorta gets there but it's boring to play so that sucks and it's also pretty different.
  8. Webcomics

I don't know if there's ever been a Dinosaur Comic that I didn't find amusing on some level, even if it was just the alt-text, which is incredibly impressive given the large quantity of Dinosaur Comics. Love that shit, yo. Also I just realized this is not the Internet Comics thread. I went back to check the things I'd already recommended so that I wouldn't re-recommend them (or maybe I WOULD, who knows!!!), but my posts are nonexistent in this thread! That's convenient for me.
  9. Gotta be honest, that video doesn't look too hot. Maybe I'm spoiled, or maybe it's just that whoever imported that put the wrong materials on the wrong things, but some of that shit is too shiny and some of it is too flat and textureless. If I saw that today in a game by a AAA developer I would be sorely disappointed. I like my games to look good. I don't think that looks good by today's standards. Even the quality of the art doesn't save it. Also, that screenshot looks better, so I'm pretty sure it's just that whoever set up this video did a bad job.
  10. Star Wars VII - Open spoilers

I think they declared expanded universe non-canon back when they originally announced the movie. I remember much internet anger, and my own glee at Star Wars fans being upset because STAR WARS SUUUUUUUUUUUUCKS all right that's my obligatory post now i'm out
  11. Cartoons!

haha good lord yes i am very thankful
  12. Idle Workouts

There are weeks of specific progress in C25K, and I won't stop counting them until I'm done with the program! Besides, keeping track of my progress like that is a much bigger motivation than not keeping track of my progress. On the down-side, the ball of my left foot is really torn up. An old blister's huge dead skin flap was driving me nuts last night and in a just-woke-up-in-the-middle-of-the-night, half-asleep delirium I sort pulled it off and it didn't go well. It's pretty messed up. Hopefully it'll feel/be better by tomorrow's run.
  13. Cartoons!

Well I started and finished all of the available Rick and Morty last night on accident. It's really, really good. It also is way less ugly when I'm actually watching it fully animated (or maybe I just accepted it and got used to it, either way).
  14. Cartoons!

I never had an issue with the premise, only the art. It's like really super ugly. Futurama's art is a whole lot more appealing (though still not my favorite).
  15. Cartoons!

FINE GUYS I'LL GIVE IT A SHOT. GEEZ. GUN TO MY HEAD, WHYDONCHA.
  16. anime

It could be but I wonder why it wouldn't be a cultural legacy of theater in general, then.
  17. anime

I have nothing to comment on besides this: Japanese girls suffer from this greatly. As in real-life Japanese girls. When I lived there it was insane how many girls I saw standing and walking like this pretty much all the time. More suffered than did not suffer, by a large margin. I used to play a game with my friends where we'd try to spot girls who didn't walk or stand like this. It was a hard game. I was told, though I don't know if it's accurate, that it's because they wear high heels so frequently. I've probably shared this before, but I once saw a woman wearing high heels while climbing Mt. Fuji.
  18. Cartoons!

In other news I binged through all of Gravity Falls late last week. It is utterly fantastic. It is pretty much exactly what I want it to be. I love it. Don't have much else to say except thanks tegan for always talking about it 'cause damn it's rad.
  19. Idle Workouts

Time for day one of week three. AHHHH.
  20. Cartoons!

I really dislike the art of Rick and Morty. A ton. It's completely unattractive.
  21. Life

Well I grew up in Dayton, moved to Lebanon near end of high school, and went to UC for undergrad. I met some good friends there who weren't so closed-minded (and one of them moved to San Francisco around the same time I did). But I only have like four friends left from undergrad, four friends left from high school, and no friends from before that. I don't think I could tolerate most people I used to know in Ohio.
  22. Dual audio in Games (The Weaboo's Lament)

This implies that they work in Japanese. SKIDOOOOOO~~
  23. VVVVVV 2.0!

    ez
  24. Unity: What I needed to know.

Weird things like that can happen when you've got multiple colliders stacked, maybe?
