The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS
Twig replied to Henroid's topic in Video Gaming
Who knows what they'll think of next? Maybe something like a small portion of the game - say, the first level or two, or a chunk in the middle of the game that demonstrates the game at its average high point - that consumers can play for themselves! -
Haha that's kind of the lamest medal I've ever seen. Still, it was a cool event so I guess that's not too important.

To be fair, I haven't seen Ping Pong. I definitely think it's way better than Jojo, though. Jojo's good but it's good for entirely different reasons than I usually like anime. Jojo's sort of... its own thing. It's off in the distance being ridiculous and muscular and contorting itself into what should be incredibly painful positions. I love it, but I struggle when trying to compare it to the other kind of anime I tend to like. Even typical shonen anime like Hunter x Hunter. I mean, Jojo still has a massive buttload of tropes. It's basically built on tropes. It would be nothing without them... But it's also different? I dunno I can't words. (Speaking of HxH, yes, your worry definitely worries me, too.) Anyway I love Nanana. I was definitely extremely hesitant at first, but with each new episode the series grows on me more and more.

That's fair. I didn't really take offense, per se, because I didn't think you actually meant it. Just wanted to make sure. I AM SATISFIED WITH THE CURRENT STATE OF THINGS. U: I like this line of your post, though. It's a pretty succinct way of defining the entire issue present in Battlefield: Hardline. I was already aware of this being the issue, for the record, I just wanted to know what it was that pushed this one over the edge. I think I've got my answer, anyway, after a few oages. I don't necessarily agree with all of it (though I do agree with a lot of it), but I can empathize wholeheartedly, as it were.
-
If you'd actually read my posts, you'd know that wasn't the case, and I don't appreciate the accusation!
-
I don't think that's particularly relevant to the issue of Militarized Cops, though. At least not in the way DICE is doing it. Like I said, if they'd made all the robbers non-white, we'd have a real problem on our hands. But the fact that everyone is white, in my opinion, makes it a moot point as far as the crux of this discussion goes. It's not about racial profiling. It's just about white dudes fighting other white dudes. That is probably a problem, but an unrelated one to the issue of militarized police. Unless that's not what you were saying, in which case I apologize for misunderstanding! I have to be honest, this seems like a really nitpicky thing to get hung up on. I don't quite understand why that difference is relevant. It's a pretty minor thing, all said and done. Of course Hardline cuts right to it. It's a multiplayer video game. I also don't think anyone's going to look at this game and think "Oh, that's how cops fight robbers these days! I better not live in the city or a building might fall on my head!" EDIT: It occurs to me this post is mostly meaningless. I'm nitpicking to counter what I think is nitpicking and that's just awkward for everyone involved. I think I've gotten all the answers I'm going to get at this point. It's all good!

Agreed. Valve games in order of priority: 1) Ricochet 2 2) Day of Defeat 2 3) Half-Life 3 If they want, they're free to throw a new IP anywhere in that list.

Desolator is, in my opinion, almost mandatory on Sniper. It's a very good item for a hero who's not up in the frontlines to have. He can ping it on whoever's being focused and BOOM they're dead that much quicker. Sniper in general is very strong with good positioning and a supporting team that can't be ignored, because he's free to do whatever he wants.

Haha okay. Yeah I see what you're saying, but... I dunno, is race/crime really relevant here? I mean, yes, I could totally see race being a factor if all of one side was white and all of another was non-white (not sure it'd matter which side was which), but (at least from what I could see in the demo I watched - please do correct me if I'm wrong) everyone was white (which is a completely different problem!). PARENTHESES. And as for the crime being committed, doesn't it being an utterly unrealistic type-of-crime-versus-type-of-criminal serve to put the game that much further in the realm of what-the-fuckery? My point in bringing up Bad Boys wasn't to provide a perfect analogue. It was to point out that pop culture media has long had over-the-top cop movies with big explosions. Maybe Bad Boys isn't the best example, I'll grant you that, but someone else suggested Lethal Weapon (which I've never seen, so I can't bring it up in good conscience), and if that's not good enough, well, c'mon, you know there's at least a long-lasting precedent here. I'm not saying THAT makes it okay either. I'm just trying to figure out why this game, right here, right now, THIS is the line that we suddenly can't cross. Because I don't understand that at all. I'll accept that in cops vs military, the cops hit much closer to home (I don't think that's particularly fair - but then again when are feelings fair), and I'm not trying to downplay anyone's reaction to it, but it all just seems to sudden and out of the blue to me. I'll just go back to my question in a previous post: Is it because it's a video game, and inherently more hands-on and immersive than a movie could ever be? Is that why it's so uncomfortable for some people?
-
I thought people like the Suicide Squad?
-
I'm confused. Bad Boys stars two black guys. Or are you saying they should be white to compare to this game? Either way, what.
-
Okay I got it even more wrong in IRC and then corrected myself to Pauline, even though I knew it was Pauling because I immediately recognize that as correct. At any rate she's rad. Also I'm sort of consistently surprised there hasn't yet been an official female model update for TF2. Someone made some a long time ago, following the style guide and silhouette mandate, and Valve even said they liked the models that were created, and yet here we are without any. Maybe Miss Pauling will be the female scout! Probably not...
-
Everybody loves some Pauline! I'd totally play as Pauline.
-
That was a long video and was pretty dang good. I love Valve's TF2 story. It's fun.

I do agree with SAM. I think that was in poor taste. But also I think the questions were in poor taste. So whatever. -

They're also poorly written! Dang. I think Mojang's stance is completely fair but also I never would've played on a pay to win server in the first place because I think they're bullshit. So go Mojang! -
How dare you. I like both equally!
-
Right but that also just makes it all the more ridiculous and over-the-top like some dumb Hollywood action movie. Bad Boys was doing this a million years ago! This is Bad Boys the video game. If Bad Boys came out now would it get the same reaction? Is it just because this is a video game, and inherently more hands-on and cringe-worthy because of it? Anyway, I don't think you're misreading the game's intentions. It is literally a hard conflict between cops and robbers. There is no solution that isn't blow each other right the fuck up. Haha it's fun name-dropping Bad Boys. PCE I'M OUTTA HERE. (Also I haven't actually seen Bad Boys in a very long time, so I might be completely misremembering the movie's actual plot.)
-
Right, but [insert everything SAM said in his last post]. I'm not saying anyone shouldn't be bothered. I just don't get why this is the first time I've heard such outrage about a game like it.

Idle Thumbs 162: Cavorting Amongst the Corpses
Twig replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
There's that deleted scene in Top Gun where Tom Cruise gets in a mech and wreaks havoc. -
This is what I don't get. Why is this the game that brings everyone to the edge? Why are the many years of glorifying war not just as terrible? We can all agree that killing is bad, right? So why don't people get up in arms every time we get another Modern Warfare? (Or, as is the case more often today, Near-Future Warfare.) And then to approach it from Zeus' side, because it's worth considering... Police brutality definitely exists, yes, of course, but just like cops in real life don't go around blowing up cranes to bring down a building to stop the robbers, cops in this game aren't going to be beating up a civilian because they're on a power trip or because they're racist or because they like it.
-
I'm planning on playing TF2 tonight, but it might just be regular TF2, not MvM. Because regular TF2 is much more fun to me. But I don't know. Depends on what the update's focused on, I suppose.

Oh I misread the question! Yeah there's some grid snapping features. I thought you were asking about actually tiling a sprite so that it'll repeat based on the size of the object you're trying to create, rather than just stretch!
-
Well that's the best idea I've ever heard.
-
If you're doing 2D stuff, there's no built-in tiling feature yet. There are plugins, but I can't remember the names of any. If you ask on the 2D forums http://forum.unity3d.com/forums/2d.53/ they might be able to point you in the right direction.
