  1. anime

Yes. Ping Pong was good, but beyond the excellent animation it didn't have much going for it. In other words, if it weren't for the animation, it wouldn't have been much to speak of. I don't think the story was all that interesting. It could've been about anything that requires dedication and hard work to excel at, and still been basically the same story. ...Nooooooot that the typical sports anime has anything much going for it, story-wise, either. It really is my anime junk food. Haikyu!! just wins a lot of points from me because it's so feel-good and boy do I love me some feel-goods. As do most sports anime of its ilk, but Haikyu!! is EXCEPTIONALLY so. Ping Pong didn't have any feel-goodiness to it. It was just pure adrenaline-infused animation. Which was great! But. EDIT: Also no I don't think Watanabe's done any sports anime.
  2. anime

I like Haikyu considerably more than I like Ping Pong.
  3. Movie/TV recommendations

I like the new Doctor, but the first two episodes were kind of shitty. The season opener was probably the worst Intro To New Doc episode since the series' renewal, and the second one featured Daleks whom I hate and wish they would go away permanently. But then the Robin Hood episode was a completely ridiculous and mostly comical take on the new guy's paranoia and suspicion and I loved it, and then last night's episode was a really tense and creepy way of showcasing the new guy's paranoia and suspicion and I loved it. More of that, please, and less of the first two eps. Phew.
  4. The more I think about this, the more I'm sort of... hopeful about it. Not optimistic, because I don't see much good coming out of it, considering it's fucking Microsoft, but... Minecraft has, in my opinion, been held back by a (somewhat deliberate! I know!) lack of resources being thrown at it. I think if it had a bigger team, it could really just grow and grow and grow. It has, for a while now, been pretty stagnant. Oh, sure, there've been some decent behind-the-scenes updates, like reworking how biomes are handled/generated, etc., but it feels like not much ever comes to fruition in that regard. Honestly, it really just kind of seems like Mojang has accepted the fact that most of Minecraft's content growth these days comes in the form of mods. Only, instead of embracing that and actually delivering the mod tools promised forever ago, they just passively let it continue. I know they somewhat-recently changed how the block ID systems work to facilitate mod growth, but everything seems to be in baby steps, rather than leaps and bounds, and that's a real shame. That's not to say the current devs are shit or anything. I think they've actually done a considerable amount. I just wish they could/would do more... So, yeah, my hope is that if this deal is real (and it seems to have some merit given the people reporting on it?), Microsoft will take Minecraft and help it explore the oceans of what it could be, instead of wade in the shallows as it is. Addendum/disclaimer: I love Minecraft. Surprising to me: The dev team for Minecraft is actually significantly bigger than I'd realized, apparently. Five client/engine devs, four server devs, one artist, and a whole lot of related stuff (ports/web/etc). Mojang, in fact, is way bigger than the 10-15 I assumed it was. In a dream world: Minecraft 2. Completely new engine in NOT JAVA GODDAMNIT, with sweet rad shaders and shit, mod support built in from the beginning instead of hacked in after the mod scene has already existed for years, a much easier content pipeline so it relies less on coding and more on designing, etc. (I've really just been waiting for someone to clone Minecraft and make it better for a long time, now, I guess. It never happened.) Well, I guess at this point this post has gotten out of control and beyond the realm of "business". I'm sorry. ):

    And now that I've caught up again I feel obligated to reiterate every time I see a new episode that Haikyu!! is the best sports anime I've yet to see. I think it's really good even if you're not as blatantly biased toward sports anime as I am, but well how would I know, being biased. It's just really good. ;_; Only one episode left. ;_;
  6. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Should we be concerned for your sanity?!
  7. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Is it maybe one of those shadowbans? I don't know if you made an account or if it's just a "fill in your name here" things, but if it's the former, I imagine they could do that. EDIT: I just checked myself and I still see the post. You guys are nuts!
  8. Adulthood, Age, and Modernity

DISCLAIMER: I haven't read any articles, I'm just responding to stuff I've seen written in posts. So this is probably all missing like a buttload of context. OH WELL. I have a very big problem with the idea that pure storytelling is a waste of your time. Fuck that. If people like stories, good. Let them read stories. There's no such thing as wasting your time by reading something purely for entertainment. It's an almost offensive idea, to me, that we are wasting our time if we don't make an effort at every single turn to improve ourselves. Who cares if someone reads Harry Potter because they have no interest in using books to grow? And also! Who cares if someone reads - I dunno, pick any book you would argue is "worth" reading - and only cares about the story and puts it down and never thinks of it again? Who cares! Whenever I read something that is supposed to be something More, I might trick myself into thinking maybe it made me think, but a week later I know I've just enjoyed the story of it. Or, I haven't enjoyed the story. Either or. Nearly all of my introspection comes from conversations I have with people. Sometimes those conversations are about books (or movies or games), and that's fine and/or good, but I don't have conversations with myself. Well, I do, but only on exceptionally lonely afternoons. And not about books. Usually. Maybe. Books just... don't do that for me, even when they're the kind that ostensibly should. The closest I believe I've come is when I read some of the Idle Thumbs Book Club books, but I think that's mostly because I was making a special effort to get more out of the books because I felt I was expected to do so. But, even then, most of my introspection came from reading other people's thoughts and then associating that with what I experienced from the books - which was, again, basically the story and nothing but the story. I guess I'm wasting my time every single time I read a book! Dangit me! Get your act together! This reads pretty negatively because it annoys me. To add some positivity: I actually enjoyed the challenge of trying to get More out of a book with the Book Club. I still haven't caught up (and since it's still going I never will ha ha oh), and I am going to actually start working on that again real soon. I'm looking forward to embracing that challenge again. (back to negativity) But my point is there's nothing wrong with not being that person. You don't have to get your emotional or mental growth from reading books, and if you're the kind of person who only really cares to read trashy pulp nonsense, then fucking go for it and feel good about yourself because fuck the world for looking down on you. It's definitely important to seek out that growth out SOMEWHERE, though. Also I promise I'll read the article tomorrow after I've woken up so I can feel extra awkward when people point out this has literally nothing to do with anything.
  9. Feminism

Wow that guy is completely convinced that "nerd culture" is built on being persecuted. From that perspective, I guess it totally makes sense to be afraid of criticism of any sort, as it's just seen as an extension of that systemic persecution. SJWs, for that kind of person, are the new bullies, slipping through their video game safety net. I wonder how old he is. I mean I was definitely bullied a lot as a kid, like a ton, so I'm familiar with that kind of feeling. But now that I'm older, I am much more able to disassociate the things I love from the things that drove me there.
  10. Adulthood, Age, and Modernity

I always think I'm dumb and have never grown up so I win.
  11. I like to comment on how people got their ears lowered when they get a haircut. Not quite as dad-jokey but I think it's still pretty good.
  12. Other podcasts

Dang. That's a lot of recommendations. NO MORE! PLEASE! I'm drowning in them! D:
  13. Yesssssssssssssssss. I can't wait to get this game October please come faster thanks.
  14. Other podcasts

Yeah that is as good a reason to switch as any! I don't usually drink outside of social contexts, but if I were, Scotch would be a good choice. As far as podcasts go, I've got a request... I recently dropped a podcast that literally had over 10 hours of content a week because I tired, well, stuff, some gross stuff. It was a comedy podcast! I now have a vacuous hole in my podcast rotation and I would like to fill it with comedy. Most common recommendation is My Brother, My Brother and Me. I've listened to it before and did not like it, but I plan to give it another shot as soon as I catch up on Bombcast. I just finished E3 2012 so... almost there?! Any other sweet recommendations?
  15. Other podcasts

Heh that sounds about right. Myself, I've tried to get used to Scotch but it is a difficult thing to do. I actually like the taste of it (unlike how I feel about beer - the hops, I guess?), but it is just so strong. I can drink it but I drink it slower than most. Except for one time I had Scotch and it was just so smooth going down and it was heaven and I wish I knew what kind it was. Anyway Shut Up & Sit Down is good and so is their offshoot video game podcast Daft Souls. HAVE I MENTIONED DAFT SOULS BECAUSE IF I HASN'T IT IS REALLY GOOD IN MY HUMBLE (AND CORRECT) OPINION.
  16. Other podcasts

Hahaha that's incredible. I can't really blame him for that, though. Scotch is HARD TO DRINK if it's not your thing.
  17. Unity Tutorials

Learning how to use the physics engine to move stuff isn't all that difficult, but just a warning: Box2D is deterministic, but only on a per-hardware basis. There's no guarantee the movements will be the same across different machines. This largely only shows itself in floating point errors, so in most cases it's so small that it's not noticeable, but it's worth keeping in mind if you're doing anything super complex. With lots of object interaction. For pure movement, if the ships/whatevers won't actually collide with anything besides the player ship and bullets, it's probably fine. Also for purposes of moving ships around in a shmup, I personally probably wouldn't touch forces. I'd just straight set the velocity and let it go, or change it based on what kind of pattern you want.
  18. It suddenly strikes me how disappointed I am Jake didn't do his pig noise when the pig joke was made.
  19. anime

Now I've caught up on Haikyu!! and it continues to be as good as sports anime gets. So feel-good.
  20. Feminism

    Haha. Damn right! ):<
  21. Feminism

Yeah but that perspective is bullshit, so it's not really worth considering. If I want to consume some entertainment garbage to feel good, then there is literally nothing wrong with that.
  22. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

    Haha, well, true enough.
  23. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

That's its own issue, I am more just soaking in the sheer irony of a movement founded on misogyny using a game featuring rape as their first review. Basically what Bjorn said.
  24. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

"If you get easily offended by various fetishes, like sex with very questionable and probably non-existent consent, then going any further is a bad idea." ........wow EDIT: this is way better than top 10 hottest girls in gaming universe, you've delivered, i will never want for anything ever again
