If they've never seen it, then how do they react when someone points out the issues? If they realize shit ain't right and back out, then good on them! But I've seen more than enough people in this situation you describe turn around and say "nah I haven't seen it so it's not true". Or "yeah well anti-GGers are harassing too". Or or or. Fuck that.
-
You know what I don't even care if they are real people. They're real people that are choosing to perpetuate an environment of harassment. Fuck them. It's been TWO FUCKING MONTHS of this bullshit and if someone is still claiming to be The Good GamerGater, then they're doing so out of willful fucking ignorance or because they don't think think it's a big fucking deal that people are, under the name of their movement, a movement FOUNDED IN AND FROM AN ENVIRONMENT OF HARASSMENT, continuing to harass Anita and Zoe and Leigh and Brianna and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and. Fuck them. Moreover, I have literally zero fucking pity for a group of people that gets upset over a fucking knock knock joke and then turns around and rejoices that a fucking neo nazi joins their party or a lawyer abuses his power to harass someone already under fire or embraces a known fucking misogynist as a forerunner of their movement. FUCK. THEM.

Whatever ends up happening, I agree that not doing it every week is the best choice.

I'm one of those people... usually. But sometimes not! Usually I know a couple weeks in advance though so not a big problem for me.

It's not that she requires work to justify her presence. It's that they explicitly supply a reason for it. If she'd just been a sexy cartoon and they never spoke on it except to say, oh, yeah, she's sexy, oo la la, that'd be one thing. But they DO go out of their way to justify it. It doesn't matter that it's a solid justification, in-world or just in-genre/setting/context/whatever. It's still a justification. But clearly I am the minority here so my opinion no longer matters. ):

Oh. Then yeah I can probably do Friday nights, at least for the foreseeable future. It's probably the worst night to commit to something, though. Unfortunately.
-
What is Friday night in America Time. It's probably early Saturday morning, right? If I'm not getting directions mixed up? EDIT: I think I have the direction wrong. That'd be Thursday morning for me which yeah can't do.
-
Yes I understand the reason, but it is still objectively a plot-given justification for a character being sexualized, even if it is the most basic and inoffensive kind of justification.
-
I would uh disagree with that. The justification is that she was drawn sexy just for the sake of being sexy!
-
There's definitely an example out there somewhere of Justified Long Dong. Damned if I can think of one, though.
-
It was just called Nichijou. Everyday. Or whatever. I'm rusty on my Japanese (implying I was ever any good HA HA HAHA), but that's close enough. Nichi is day! I know that! Jou must be every...

I think that's pretty apt, except that the term "non-sexual" might get in the way. Isn't a fembot being designed to be sexy inherently sexual?
-
Hey I like small boobs! Is this getting too personal? Sorry. I think the point is that it's a common practice to make women hotter in fiction by giving them ample bosoms, and that's why it's an easily identifiable characteristic of the over-sexualization trope - whatever context that is. We're not making a judgment on what is sexy; we're identifying common examples of what a creator deems sexy and then assigning it (or not assigning it) the more specific trope of sexualization by backstory.
-
I wouldn't include that no. That's more an example of a setting than it is a character trope, to me.
-
A trope by definition is just a storytelling device, right? But one that's become so common as to almost be ubiquitous. The trope here is: background/backstory justification for sexualization. I'm not sure it's useful to start judging the execution of the trope... It LOSES its usefulness, in my mind, once we start picking and choosing which ones qualify based on whether they're well or poorly executed...
-
Okay, then who should be making the final call, if we're going to start bringing judgment or worthiness into this? That's obviously a question you can't answer. Nor can I. So our options are to be arbitrarily subjective about it all or just include any example, justified or not. I think my earlier distinction - body structure vs. sexy outfits - is more important than this one about justification. But that's maybe me being selfish. Inara from Firefly is naturally an attractive woman, but, AFAIK, there's no genetic modification to make her more beautiful. (It's possible I just forgot or am unaware of this, if it does exist.) She wasn't built to be beautiful. She just is, and then took advantage of that. She'd fall into the sexy outfit category. That's in contrast to Miranda, who WAS built to be beautiful (and perfect in other ways). Same with EDI (or any fembot) - built to be beautiful. Moxxi from Borderlands would fall into the sexy outfit category. Bayonetta, too. Etc. Also we're so far just a bunch of dudes (or at least mostly dudes, from what I know) talking about this. It's even more likely, I think, for a woman to see something as problematic and unjustified than we would. Sooo there's that, too.
-
By introducing subjectivity (because everyone's going to have different opinions on the quality of execution of the trope) things get crazy! For example I don't think the Firefly character's execution is poor, but obviously brkl has problems with it! Similarly, I think Kill la Kill's is largely justified, but that's because I'm familiar with anime in general and the tropes it exploits in particular. Someone who isn't a fan of anime like I am will probably immediately fund it all repulsive. And that's not wrong!
-
Yeah as I said earlier I don't think the QUALITY of the EXECUTION of the trope matters. All that matters is that it is a trope. Isn't that how TV Tropes works? It makes no judgment. It just presents examples.
-
I'm with Jon on this. I didn't feel that way. I think it's a pretty apt description. What Anita's doing is not some in-depth, hyper-detailed criticism with any deep meaning. It's very surface-level and simple and basic. That is not a bad thing! It just sort of emphasizes that it's not a complex issue, to my mind. (It's also why I, personally, find her videos rather boring. Important! But boring. That doesn't mean bad. It just means they're not for me.)
-
I don't think how good the justification for sexualization is should have any weight in whether or not a trope qualifies. A trope is a trope, whether well done or not.
-
...was the path too long? If it's really long sometimes programs might have issues with it. I don't know. Just sort of a random guess.
-
Also Flowers of Evil has some really really pretty and hyper detailed backgrounds. I guess they can afford to do that because the rotoscoping is cheaper? (I honestly have no clue.) I really love the way it looks, so far. And the music.
-
Yes, Reyturner, I had brought that up in the original conversation. Wasn't sure if we should be focusing only on body or also on outfit. Bayonetta was my original concern in that regard, but since it was still in that list up there, I figured KlK was fair game. EDIT: Guys he's not saying KlK isn't guilty of a sexualization trope; he's just saying it maybe doesn't belong in the same category as Mirana's Ass. I'm inclined to agree, but also at the same time, maybe we should group them together until we have enough examples of BOTH types of tropes to make TWO! My professional opinion. EDIT EDIT: Well I actually went back and reread Reyturner's original post and now I'm not so sure what he's saying is what I said above. But I still stand by what I said above.

Twin Peaks Rewatch 3: Zen, or the Skill to Catch a Killer
Twig replied to Jake's topic in Twin Peaks Rewatch Episodes
??? i say this on a daily basis -
Kill la Kill's entire premise is (and this is veering into spoiler territory, so I'll spoiler it i guess? no one who hasn't seen it likely cares though... also it's... well here) And yeah I'm serious that's the anime. From an outside perspective, it's totally cringe-worthy, but it sort of makes sense in the context of Anime... i don't know why I'm trying to defend it - it is what it is... anyway yes. So all of Dollhouse? I can agree with that stuff being dumb, but I'm not so sure it fits this trope as we've laid it out.
