She looks significantly more badass in that getup than any other I've ever seen, so maybe that'll be enough to help it stick around for once? I dunno I don't really read superhero comics so that probably has no bearing on anything.
  2. anime

The unexplained talking bear is actually explained, just maybe not in the anime. I wanted to watch the anime because the manga is great but it just looks so ugly. X:
  3. anime

Like they're basically identical in concept: traveling "medicine" man solves supernatural problems. But they're so completely different in tone and style that I hesitate to compare them. I like them both. I definitely prefer Mushishi, as I just in general prefer the more understated, atmospheric style than I do the colorful and exciting style. But I still quite like Mononoke. Also yeah I'm definitely gonna rewatch Oh! Edo Rocket like maybe this weekend I'll start...
  4. anime

Mononoke is great. It's not straight up horror, but it definitely touches it a bit. It's actually sort of similar to Mushishi but much more stylish and, maybe, bombastic? Colors everywhere in your eyes and ears.

Also just for the record this is one of the ones to which I was referring in my rambly paragraph. It's great and actually you know what I might just rewatch it sometime soon...

Also I'm gonna go back a bit and second the Planetes maybe-recommendation. It's hard sci-fi, near future, when we've got a lunar base and a bunch of space debris and basically it follows a space debris clean up crew trying to make the space stations safer. (I don't actually remember much about it, it's been a long while, but I remember absolutely loving it.)

I'll make up for it with an audio clip. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPMKlEwrIs8

You rang? welp that's a new page for ya
  9. anime

Yeah but I don't even think it's "an anime thing". It's just "a fiction thing". Anime is like everything else. There's a massive fuckload of it, spanning tons of different genres with tons of different audiences. And like everything else, the majority of it caters to the mainstream, because that's what makes money. The mainstream in Japan trends toward dudes being rad and cute girls being all up on said dudes. Which, well, I don't think is all that different from the mainstream in Western stuff, either, it's just that the cute girls are cute in a different way and the rad dudes are rad in a different way. You could go watch Princess Jellyfish, which is completely unlike anything you've mentioned, or asked for, about a bunch of college-age women living together and some stuff happens that's a bit goofy and a bit touching and a bit other. You could also watch the previously mentioned Kids on the Slope (but the ending sucks still no matter what anyone else says!). You could turn a different direction and watch tons of different sports anime, from volleyball to basketball to a competitive card-slapping game, and they'd all feel significantly different, while also still having the same overall arc of a bunch of kids loving a sport and being obsessed with it. Or an old-timey ridiculously goofy take on a fireworks ban in Japan where a fireworks-expert rebel tries to help an alien get back into space? I dunno, a darker-toned gambling anime, in which case you could go with Kaiji or maybe One Outs if you like a baseball gambling angle? Maybe you like a chill atmospheric supernatural mystery-solving weird fiction anime, in which case mushishi cos it's best ever always I guess a good question would also be: what do you like in other things that aren't anime?

I think FLCL looks cool and is fun to watch but I've never really understood the massive hype surrounding it. Shrugggg. Also I think Kids on the Slope has a bad ending! ANIME SUX

Terry Pratchett has passed away. I am extremely sad right now. He is one of my favorite authors. In a world where I did more writing, he would probably be at the top of my list of influences. I mean, even in this world, where I don't, he still is. Ahh. ):

Sound effects, free to use! Or royalty-free? I'm too lazy to read the license but hey http://www.reddit.com/r/gamedev/comments/2ynqyo/10gb_of_highquality_game_audio_free_download/

Yeah but DBZ doesn't really care about its own mythology WAIT WE ALREADY HAD THIS DISCUSSION And eh mentions Blue Gender as a specific example which is definitely not a DBZ type of anime from what I've seen since hearing about it.
  16. anime

Yeah I was going to mention Baccanno and maybe even Durarara buttttttt both of those have like magic and superpowers and shit so I dunnooooo.
  17. anime

I don't know if I agree that Cowboy Bebop as a show really has a strong sense of direction, either, barring the few episodes that actually delved into character background. Even the introduction of Vicious isn't really all that... big? To start? I dunno. I always felt it was pretty haphazard storytelling, and that's a big reason why I like it so much. It's a sort of meandering direction, is the word I think I usually use. You know it's going somewhere, but until you get there it's not really clear. Michiko to Hatchin felt similar.
  18. anime

Its aimlessness is why it felt so much like Cowboy Bebop to me, hah.
  19. anime

I was gonna suggest this actually, it definitely evoked a lot of the feelings I got from Cowboy Bebop. I guess it's inferior in some ways but it's also good for some different reasons. I really liked it a lot. I'm not sure I'd recommend Trigun, though. I feel like it'd fall into the magical gemstone power chosen one BS category???
  20. anime

To be honest I'm not even sure what you mean by "power gemstone magic chosen one BS dumb humor magic BS power gem". Do you hate super powers? Do you hate gemstones? Do you hate magic? Do you hate humor? Do you hate chosen ones? Or is it just the combination of all of those things? I have never even heard of Blue Gender, I don't think, so I can't even meet you there. U:
  21. anime

That's good to hear. I have a friend who really loves the series(es), but honestly his tastes run a little... counter to might, fairly often. So I was worried. Like I said, I liked it years ago, but this time it's rough. I still like the setting and the direction, and, heck, on their own I even like the individual stories of each character (barring extremely weird junk like swimsuited underage girl sexy pain moans...). It's just the whole package is sorta off-putting. I'll definitely keep at it, though.
  22. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Yeah that's true, but I sorta regret the second half of my post, as it was meant to be an aside, rather than an extension to the first half. Basically what SBM said.
  23. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Maybe that overtly sexist bullshit is a reflection of problems in reality, while over-the-top action is a fantasy? I dunno. Though you can certainly find plenty of people (even some on these forums) who think overly violent movies are problematic.

GraphicsGale is the superiorest pixel art program. I've used it for years. Gimp is... incredibly unwieldy for pixel art. Photoshop, too.
