It's a good time to be a gamer OR Is it a good time to be a gamer?
Squid Division replied to toblix's topic in Video Gaming
I can't tell if it's awesome or awful. I've still got Forza and Dragon Age that I'm about halfway through, then I've got Borderlands, L4D2, Torchlight, the first two STALKER games from December. Mass Effect 2 (sidequests) from January. New STALKER game and Napoleon Total War comes out tomorrow which will eat up all of my time. I haven't even had a chance to check out Darksiders at all. And Battlefield BC2 comes out next week. Good lord. -
True, but there aren't really a lot of tactics in Civ4 anyway. At least every game I've played. I play Total War, so I don't really go to Civ for the combat, I go for the depth of everything else.
-
I don't really see how hexes change the game play beyond the tactics, that said, you can sign me up for every other Civ game made until the end of time.

I used to put the gun up to the screen to shoot the damned ducks and clay pigeons.

Downward F@#$ing Dog! (No More Heroes 2 Discussion)

haha, good lord. I played about half of NMH1, how does the sequel compare? Is there more variation and more to do, and how much do you need to know about the first one for the second one (my guess is none except for in-jokes)? -

The Idle Thumbs Podcast Episode 1: THE GREAT GATLING-GUNSBY
Squid Division replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Wait, I thought Episode -7 was the consensus best? Or was that -7 of yet another podcast? -
Did anyone else notice a big Battlestar Galactica influence in ME2 that wasn't there in ME1? They use a lot of the same acronyms like CIC, FTL, etc. that weren't in the first game but were used all the time in BSG. Not to mention Tricia Helfer and Michael Hogan. It kind of tainted the Quarian fleet a little by making it seem more derivative than ME1 ever did.
-
I'm guessing.
-
Absolutely. If Tali can't be in the next game because (I bet) Kal Reegar better be a party character. Anybody else love the Quarians as much as I do? I don't know what it is, but they are by far my favorite, and I will fuck anybody up who is biased against them, even if I'm playing Paragon.

One of my favorites: Big fan of this type of art.

Good choice. I had totally forgotten to talk about the Rome expansions. I haven't played barely any of Alexander as it's kind of really hard. Barbarian Invasion however is an amazing expansion that makes for one of the most rapidly changing games I've ever seen. The ability to defeat someone and turn them into a roving barbarian horde means that it's not improbable to have an entire nation or two living within your own boundaries, as actually happened.

There was a compare feature, even in the stores, at least on xbox there was. I agree about the stacking, but I disagree with the naming. Certain companies had certain emphases in their armor, some had more shields vs. more armor, and this was consistent through each iteration of their armor. I really liked the manufacturer aspect of the game, I made sure to keep a lookout for certain companies because they suited my play-style best. I never found the equipment modifiers to be over-abundant outside of not stacking. They were pretty different from each other and each useful in their different ways. I still don't see much difference between this system and say the one from Dragon Age.
-
What's the difference between it and any other RPG with equipment ever?
-
Well I was getting a little worn with the game so I decided to go ahead and finish it. Man is the overarching story, what there is of any, bad. Also I think I liked the inventory system way better in ME1. They just needed to not give you an artificial limit on how much stuff you could carry and it would have been fine. I think my ideal Mass Effect would be ME1 with the character side missions from 2. I definitely don't feel like ME2 did anything better than ME1 except the teammate development. Everything else was different or worse.

I'd say the best one is Rome, followed by Empire. Rome is pretty much the epitome of the Total War franchise, and I still go back to it pretty often. the only parts that feel dated about it for me are the graphics and the ability to only recruit one unit at a time from towns. Medieval II is essentially a siege-fest that necessitated mods to get the AI working right, even afterwards it still wasn't all that good. Empire is really deep in everything except the unit variation, which Medieval has the most of but Rome does the best. The problem I could see with Empire for someone who's never played a Total War game is how complex it is. Fortunately the tutorial is pretty good about explaining stuff I think. Most of the stuff you may read about the AI being awful has been patched out, as well as the awful stability issues (for the most part). For which one you should get, I'd say Empire, it's a little flawed but the incredible depth added by the vastly improved diplomatic system and the sea battles outweigh any of that. Edit: All three have a demo by the way. It gives you an idea of the battles, but not the campaigns (of which I'd say Empire is the best). Empire demo: on Steam Medieval II demo Rome demo

One thing I've noticed during my time playing is that while the combat system has been streamlined, it doesn't really force you to learn how to use it like the old, clunky one did. I'm playing through on normal which might have something to do with it, and as a soldier, but a lone soldier shouldn't really be able to just go through the game with relative ease without ever really using the teammates. I think the length of the missions has as much to do with this as the difficulty; it always feels to me like the missions should be like 15 minutes or so longer. Nice that the random difficulty spikes are gone though (save for whenever a scion or the flying collector show up).

I love how each city has its own very distinctive feel and character. Florence with its sprawling low buildings, Venice with the tall buildings constantly punctuated by the canals, Firenze with the really cramped uphill buildings. Forli was the one that felt the least unique to me since it was just kind of a mixture of the other cities.

Back in elementary school I rented Superman 64. That game has scarred me for life.

Dammit, that's cool/sucks because Tali has always been my favorite, decisions decisions.
