  1. Also, having synced a couple of viewpoints in Venezia, the game says I've still done just over half of them. Either Venezia is that much bigger than the others, or there's another city waiting.

Venice is the last major city, but it is the biggest and there are definitely lots of viewpoints. You might have skipped over the viewpoints in Forli since you don't really do any story missions there (except for the DLC, of course)

  2. The Top 100 in the February issue of US PC Gamer (I think it might be the same list as the UK PC Gamer, since the two staffs collaborated) is actually really excellent. I was surprised by how on-target it was, and how good the writeups were.

I really liked the list as well. I had never heard of Cave Story until I read it. I just downloaded it today (it's free!) and it is definitely one of the best indie games I have ever played.

  3. I played on easy or normal, don't remember which, but the game didn't feel particularly challenging at any time (except for some riddles). Not that it's bad -- if I choose easy mode, I want to just experience the game more than be challenged.

If you want a challenge, try to 100% the challenges...that took me awhile.

  4. I wanted to mention that the fan-made handbook for Mother 3 is really lovely work.

Also, did anyone else get round to playing the translation?

I just played through my first three hours and I'm enjoying it. It's too early to tell if this game is as true-to-formula it could well be, and maybe I'll never finish it if so.

Of course it has something close to the proper JRPG combat seen in Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger, and I'll probably always feel like the Zelda school of real-time bashing (with puzzley twists for the boss fights) would have suited this game better. But there's enough polish and thoughtful storytelling and weirdness elsewhere, so far.

There is one particular key plot-point cutscene early on that is both absolutely hilarious and surprisingly tragic in the same moment. It's worth playing for that, probably. It's the bit with

the good news/bad news at the bonfire, and Flint's ensuing tantrum

    ...

    Downloading now...I can't wait! I beat Earthbound maybe 20 times as a kid. I didn't have many games :(

  5. Is it just me or did the last few decoder wheel puzzles not make any sense? I ended up lining it up to whatever picture was in the clue and then set the number of one I didn't know to a picture that it could be and cycled through the 3rd and pressed A after every spin. I would repeat that until I "solved" it.

  6. I was horrified by this image from Kotaku: the maddeningly narrow, linear path of the first six hours of Final Fantasy XIII.

I never want to play this game.

Yeah, I know everybody does mostly the same stuff in a JRPG anyway, but this promises to be endless cutscenes, some battles, and zero exploration.

I know people will tolerate this type of gameplay, but look at that image. Is that conducive to fun role-playing? Compare that to Chrono Trigger. Compare it to a Western RPG like Fallout 3. Compare it to Diablo, which lets you leave the dungeon every once in a while.

Is that image what people want?

The thing I like about FF games is the unique battle systems and character development. It's not really about exploration or shaping the story like Bioware or Bethesda RPGs.

  7. Gaaaaah!

Out of curiosity, how much time did you had to sink into it? I've been playing for about 20 minutes/day (commuting) for last two months and I'm yet to pass 600k.

Probably at least an hour spread over my day at work. Whenever I feel like taking a break I play for a couple minutes. That happens a lot :hah:

  8. That said, I'm on PC (thank you, Steam sale!) and anyone from the Thumb who'd like to co-op with me should let me know. I'm playing as Mordecai, and have most of my points so far invested into things that give me crazy powerful crits. My Gamespy name is the same as my forum name, so look me up. I'll be playing as much as I am able for what will probably be a while.

I will definitely hit you up. I'll be under my forum name as well.

edit: also add me on steam - hob0cop

  9. In high school, whenever I played games in my room, I would usually have the stereo on behind me (depending on the type of game). I remember I was listening to a lot of Nonpoint and Blue October when I played Super Mario Sunshine. So anything from those two albums I was listening to usually cause my brain to show images of Mario jumping and hovering in the water backpack.

  10. Thinking real hard about Left 4 Dead over here. How feasible would it be for a complete L4D newcomer to get in and enjoy online matches at this point? Do most people have headsets? Has everyone left for L4D2?

You will be fine. Play on normal at first. Most newcomers play there and once you have good feel for the stages and tactics, go to advanced. My experience is that most people don't have headset on normal, but they do on advanced.

  11. Good thread. There are plenty of my favorite childhood games that hold up, especially the RPGS on the SNES. Earthbound has been mentioned, as well as Super Mario RPG, FF 3/6, Chrono Trigger, Lufia II, etc.

However, I know there are a few that I loved that I went back to that didn't hold up as well. Startropics was one of my favorite games as a kid, but that didn't hold up too well.
