I'd never heard of this game till I saw a preview for it in the latest issue of PCGamer. At the following link the developer gives a breakdown of information on it along with a trailer. http://www.bigbluecup.com/yabb/index.php?topic=35594.0 I thought it looks bloody awesome and has some pretty interesting gameplay. The PCGamer preview implies that there aren't a lot of weird puzzles (IE. item combining). It also says you alternate between controlling two characters through the game. Me wanty...
  2. Recently completed video games

I beat Farcry 2 last night... The game did a lot of things right, but a lot of things wrong as well... a few times I said "That's it, screw this game", but evidently I was compelled enough to keep playing.
  3. 3D

I used nvidia's 3D vision for about a year. The 3D is handled by the drivers, but I didn't run into many issues. Some games looked pretty wonky (2D interface on a 3D game never worked, unless the developers had 3D in mind). Overall I had a very good experience with it though. I ended up parting with my video card and glasses because I wanted to go with an Eyefinity setup instead. (Speaking of which, if someone wants to buy my 120hz monitor - it's on the market)

  5. I remember when I was in Grade 4 in elementary school. For my science project that year, I selected "Computers". My dad owned the only computer shop in town, so we always had extra computers at home. So for my science project all I really did was build one of those three-leafed backboards with a few notes about computers written on it, and set up a GIANT full-size tower on the desk with the monitor. This was set up in the Gym for the science fair. I pulled the computer case off to show off the inards of the amazing monstrocity. I think it was actually a customers computer. In any case, I thought Willy Beamish was the best thing ever... the music, art, gameplay was just absolutely amazing. For the time, the graphics in particular were really impressive. I booted it up and started playing. In just minutes, FLOCKS of children abandoned their shitty paper mache volcano's and pepsi bottle submarines to watch me play this glorious looking game. It was like a real-time cartoon. After a few minutes one of the teachers asked me to shut the computer off, so I did and the kids all went back to their projects. Soon after one of the kids comes back and asks me to load the game back up because it was so good. I do, and the crowd begins to form. Again the teacher - more stern looking - returns and tells me to turn it off and leave it off, so I did. When the judges came around to ask questions about the project, one of the women asked me what all of the different parts in the computer were. She pointed to the 5 1/4" Floppy drive and asks "what is that?" I replied "A floppy drive." Next she points to the 3 1/2" Floppy drive and asks the same question. I replied "that's a hard drive." She asks "Then what's this?" pointing to the hard drive. ". . . Thats also called a hard drive." Pointing to the 3 1/2" floppy drive again, she says "I have one of these in my computer, and I think that it's also called a floppy drive" "Nope, that's a hard drive." Willy Beamish: Memories. . .
  6. Fucking PC gaming!

Why isn't everyone playing ARMA 2: Operation Arrowhead?
  7. Super Thumb Fighter 4

Does anyone play with Deejay? Is he still a good all-arounder? That's who I mostly used in SSFII. Looking forward to my game getting here.
  8. Yeah, fair enough. It just kind of came across as though Soren's comment about WoW's design being evolutionary was discredited entirely when it seems like it has some merit. I guess if he himself made some distinctions between the two game designs that weren't really there, the tossing aside of his comment was warranted. Anyway, I've finished listening to the cast, Phaedrus 2010 was the best. Anecdote theater: I thoroughly enjoy hearing the Stalker and Fallout stories. I thought I'd share a story, but with the game ARMA II. I was playing in a large 80+ person multiplayer game on the American side against Russia. I took the role of a sniper - not what I normally do, but wanted to give it a shot. Now, there were two main conflicts going on in two different small towns, and to get back into the action about half of the guys who would respawn would have to travel a pretty good distance, and would generally take a specific route passing through a hamlet sized town (a warehouse, half a dozen houses etc.) I spent about 20 minutes in real time running from my side into a forest that was elevated on a hill overlooking this hamlet. The Russians didn't anticipate anyone to go that distance by foot. But there I setup, initially on the higher section of the hill. I found a pretty nice suitable spot to snipe guys with my .50 caliber rifle, around 900 meters - close to 1.5 miles - away. I had five clips with 10 bullets each. It took about 5 shots for me to accurately compensate for the gravity over that distance (this was before I knew how to actually use the scope properly), and get close to hitting guys. I think I took down two guys with my first clip. By this point, the rest of the people on that side would have been warned there is a sniper in the hill, and from the sound delay they would have known it was a very far distance. I decided to move about 300 meters closer, and come a ways down the hill. It was a good move, as about three guys with AK47s started to randomly fire into the hill up behind me. I was now in an insanely good hiding spot under a big spruce tree. At this point, I was taking down guys left and right. Most guys just took their chances and tried to run through the town hoping I'd miss them. So this went on for about 20 minutes. When they attempted to approach the hill generally they were veering off to my left and they thought I was higher than I was, but it was impossible for them to get close enough to me to know where I was. Anyway they were getting frustrated, and brought their one APC away from their main conflict to come and deal with me. As it got closer it launched a ton of grenades all over the forest, but again higher than I actually was. Just to piss them off I shot the APC's hull once to let them know I was still alive. I think at this point I only had 3 or 4 bullets left. They evidently were pissed off - they came flying into the forest full speed smashing down trees, whilst shooting more grenades, and their machine gun at the same time (meaning there was at least three guys in it). They came right up to a specific spot about 100m behind me, stopped, and just start firing everything they had where they thought I was. This was the golden moment... I had one land mine with me. They were firing and firing, and I quickly hopped up, and sprinted towards them from behind them. I planted the mine about 10 meters behind them and they right shortly after stopped shooting. I thought they spotted me even though they weren't facing me. But no, what actually happened was they had completely run out of bullets. Anyway, I'm sprinting away from them, watching them from over my shoulder, and I couldn't believe my eyes - I stopped and just watched as they slowly started backing up... *BOOOM*... There's little more satisfying than picturing the nerd-rage that must have ensued from the russian dudes that were in that tank. I was shortly thereafter kicked, I'm sure because they thought I was cheating. (Slow day at work = Wall of text)
  9. I want to comment on the bit where you were talking about Soren Johnson's talk about game mechanics and game theme. There was a bit of discussion on how he said that spore isn't an evolution whereas WoW is, and I would agree that that doesn't seem like a correct statement. But I think Chris said "evolution is based on random chance" which for some reason is the way the word is defined by most people in general, but is actually a pretty narrow synopsis of what evolution can refer to. In fact most definitions of the word refer to some outside influence on the subject. I didn't hear the context in which the speaker was actually speaking, but the word evolution is really quite broad, and he could have been perfectly accurate in saying WoW characters 'evolve' or go through an evolution or whatever. The actual definition of "Evolution" is: 1.any process of formation or growth; development: the evolution of a language; the evolution of the airplane. 2.a product of such development; something evolved: The exploration of space is the evolution of decades of research. 3.Biology. change in the gene pool of a population from generation to generation by such processes as mutation, natural selection, and genetic drift. 4.a process of gradual, peaceful, progressive change or development, as in social or economic structure or institutions. To me, the speaker was both right and wrong. I think the WoW game mechanics could be considered 'evolutionary', but in the same way that Spore's are. I'm not sure what the distinction between the two games is, that he was trying to make. /debbie downer
  10. L.A. Noire

An adventure game in this setting, with some action sequences, in sort of a GTA like world is pretty much my dream game. That would be awesome.
  11. Yeah, I thought it was a pretty good episode. Definitely not my favorite, but still very entertaining. I was kind of hoping for a bit more conversation on ME2 I think though. I remember quite a big conversation between Chris and Shawn on GWJ podcast, but also on the Idlethumbs podcast a bit, specifically on the subject zero character. There wasn't really any mention of that now that you guys have played through it though. I was extremely apprehensive from the advertising as well, but was surprised to find that in the end Jack was actually one of my favorite characters (her loyalty mission fleshed her out quite a bit. Actually the loyalty missions I thought were the best part of the game). Anyway, keep fit and have fun.
  12. Dragon Age

Is it possible to play this as a goody two-shoes? If not, forget it.
  13. New people: Read this, say hi.

Why hello there, I really enjoy your ipod radiocast. I love video games, they're a great way to have fun. Frantic Freddie was the first game I ever played. My dad was into computers (well, ham radios primarily), so we had a C64, and this was what began the saga of my nerd life. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yuC8raz5CY Actually I remember one time as a gift, he actually took a floppy disk with some platformer game to a guy in town, and this guy actually programmed in the mario bros. to replace the generic characters.
  14. Have people seen Machinarium?

I enjoyed the demo, although to be honest thought the pixel-hunting was pretty bad... the puzzles weren't that hard, so it wasn't a big issue, but I imagine later on in the game it could get a lot worse.
