I second this Come along Thumb army!

HB to all you young dudes, who carry the new-hu-hews

Synth, have you checked your BIOS settings for the temperature thing? There may be some stupidly low temp alarm setting for the CPU or something. Gigabyte boards can be a bit frustrating.

Nice work Sombre! Man it'a nice feeling when you get your results and they is good

I have too many difficult exams to do and revise for. My life is poo right now (in an exam sense, not in a family sense, they are great) Peaks and troughs of confidence are the norm for me, how about you? I figured this would be a good thread as many of the Thumbs are exam vets or going through exams and some are exam greenhorns. We need to consolidate tactics for survival Splurge forth your exam hangups and probs. My probs? Revision is such a draaaaag I inevitably freak out just before I step into the exam hall fearing I will know nothing. I am an infrequent revisor. I am incapable of change. As I said...DISCUSS. EDIT: This is a 'for fun' thread. This is mostly because I have had a little too much of Grandpa's medicine and am fed up with exams. I feel a sly nod and a wink should be enough to show you know the subject to an acceptable standard. If you work in a job that requires no more exams, you are very lucky and I want your job.

Thanks Nach! Now I can find a bit of time to do some cool beans like the things you have been doing! *high fives the world*

I second this. A brief synopsis somebody if you will

You probably already did Toblix but I thought I would say it anyway, it's worth removing every usb device you possibly can, some motherboards don't like them first off, especially Gigabyte motherboards, they can even cause a crash-boot-crash cycle for no apparent reason when everything was previously fine (The problem I had). I keep a serial connectable keyboard and mouse for this reason and use them if I ever have to fault find in my system. Also, you must have a lot of filthy wonga lying about in your wallet to be able to just replace your entire PC almost...I AM JEALOUS. That is all thankyou.

Hhmmm, not much interest then? We haven't played very much of the game yet, but it looks like it has real depth, a good bit of action but not too much that you get fatigued after an hour alá BC2. Come on people, get in on some Vodnik action!

Yeah I agree, let's shake hands there. I just read the last bit of your edited post (about your friend) and I can see more clearly where your passion comes from. As a final summary (for any who googlestumble upon this thread perhaps) can we agree that the important thing is to try and do something about your inner feelings, whether that be talking to a friend, self help books etc, counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy or whatever works for you, rather than suffer alone and in silence, feeling like the only option is to end it all. Or you could post on IdleThumbs, most of us on here seem to have been one step away from the nuthouse at some point or other! We can help! (can you feel me lightening the mood a little there <exhales> )

I'm sorry Thunderpeel but the evidence just doesn't back you up. Infact, contrary to your first statement, there are many papers that show self help to be at least as effective as more formal 'face to face' therapy (See: Williams and Whitfield, Written and computer based self help treatments for depression, 2001, Gould and Clum, A meta analysis of self help treatment approaches, 1993, and many others) I can't find any studies that demonstrate self help to be destructive (I can't say for sure that there aren't any but they appear to be scarce and what little information there is out there is overwhelmingly anecdotal). Again, I would like to read any references you have that show self help to actually make depression worse. In regard to your 80% of suicides are caused by untreated depression government document. It's clear intuitively and from the literature that certain depressive states are associated with suicide, I am not disputing that, but to say that the suicides are caused by untreated depression infers by extension that if we could treat that depression, 80% of suicides could be prevented and I'm just not that sure that that would be the case. I am painfully aware that we could treat depression a lot better than we do, but there is an awful lot more variables that drive people to commit suicide than just being depressed. Hundreds of thousands of people in the UK alone are clinically depressed yet only a handful will commit suicide. Many who commit suicide will have been treated or be on treatment when they undergo their final act, so to imply that treating those 80% will stop them from committing suicide appears to me at least to be a gross oversimplification. The cynic in me might also suggest that it sounds like a statement put about by big pharma in the hope of selling more antidepressants on the back of it .

Good post Thunderpeel. FWIW I think I would have got on better if I had followed some of the 'groundrules' you talked about. Also, and I don't think you were saying this to pooh pooh me or anything, I was trying to say 'if professional help doesn't work for you, don't worry, you are not abnormal, it just isn't the right thing for everybody' rather than trying to put people off getting formal help if you catch my drift. So yeah, don't be put off by my experience, but don't feel bad if it formal help doesn't gel for you either. On a side note, are we all/have been/currently are, fucking mental on these here forums?! EDIT: I don't get exactly why you have such a bee in your bonnet about the self help way of thinking? I wasn't 'casually' bigging up self help like it was the only form of treatment, just commenting that formal help doesn't work for everyone, you did say after all, that self help will never be as good as formal help and that just isn't true for everyone. I would also like to see your source for the 80% of suicides are caused by untreated depression statement. That sounds like nonsense to me so I would be keen to look a little deeper into that. I respect that you have had a rough time of it at some point and that certain advice or treatment doesn't/didn't work for you but you are coming across a bit angry and confrontational. I'm pleased that the treatment you had worked for you, it just doesn't work for everyone.

Note to inner self: Don't get into an argument with Miffy, he's far more intelligently wordier than you are. You are science, he is art.

Nice post Nach, well put. A small point if I may. I don't think that the application of the medical model to mental illness created stigma, the stigma of mental illness was already there and itself is a function of our unconcious mind, at least in part. It makes sense from an evolutionary perspective to distrust a member of the group who looks the same as they always did, but now cannot be trusted to function as well or be relied upon perform certain tasks etc. I haven't described that very well but I hope you see what I am trying to say there I am a vehement crusader for increasing awareness of mental illness and encourage patients and their relatives, colleagues, family, friends etc to think of mental illness in the same way as any illness i.e. a broken leg- 'they will get better but they need time to heal/adjust etc. To me, being mentally ill can be much, much worse than being physically ill. Although it didn't work for Thunderpeel, I think that self therapy can be as successful if not more successful than formal therapy but it's not for everyone. I have experienced formal therapy and it was near useless, the only person that could help me was me. I am intrigued about the seemingly madcap religion you experienced Nachimir, if only to reinforce my already well established aethiestic stance

A new multiplayer game (for the times when left for lobby gets too much)
Armchair General posted a topic in Multiplayer Networking
So the Pirate and I have been thinking about having a second shooter based multiplayer for our delectation. Sometimes more than one game of Left for Dead 2 is too much, but there is fuel in the tank for a different format. The contenders.. ARMA 2 The new Alien Vs Predator Bioshock 2 MW2 maybe? Most of us have CS:S (although perhaps not installed) which we could dip in and out of. Pros: Simple, fun, heaps of maps. Cons: Simple, bit samey and populated by folk who play it day and night without break and we know how much we like the public... What does the learned panel think? Any ideas? Andy edited to make sense -
Yeah I hope he gets his pc back in time to drop out/crash/explode during Sunday's game....

I'd rather watch that too Dan

That's hilarious Monkey

Well put Miffy. I agree.

Try turning it off and then on again. I find this sorts most computer problems. No need to thank me.
