  1. DeathSpank

If you're ever having trouble with a boss, just drop an invincibility orb. Those things are great. They're not buyable in shops so I'd save them for bosses though.
  2. Xbox 360 Exclusives? (!)

I have both. I've had the 360 for longer, but because I prefer the PS3 controller and am a cheapskate when it comes to online, I use the PS3 way more. The 360 is basically my fable/mass effect/xbla exclusive box and the PS3 for everything else. If you wanted an excuse to argue in favor of the the 360, I'd probably toss Forza in there. GT5 could end up being better, but it's by no means a sure thing and it's taking its sweet time to show up.
  3. Choose the next game I should play...

I'm having a hard time choosing, but just wanted to pipe in to say that Emerald City Confidential, while flawed, is an underappreciated gem if the notion of throwing noir trappings on a fairytale story appeals to you at all. It's a shame, but Dave Gilbert has basically said that there's not going to be a sequel.
  4. iPhone/iTouch gaming

Galaxy on Fire 2 is kind of pricey by iphone game standards, but it's awesome. It's a privateer/elite/freelancer kind of game. The first one, Galaxy on Fire 3D is free, so give that a go and add retina display, voice acting, mining minigame, gamecenter integration, much improved galaxy map & ship customization options, a proper trading system, basically improvements in every department. Tilt to steer control (same as the 1st one) works great IMO. So addicted to this. I was just going to have a little peek at it before going to sleep last night and didn't close down my iphone until it was down to 40% battery from a full charge when I started (yes that means I didn't get to sleep until 5 this morning and having to get up at 9).
  5. Back to the Future

    first episode free
  6. Costume Quest

Hmm. Getting the 3rd person marks being 2/3 of the way through? I'm there already after what seems like not very long at all. But it's fun enough and I guess padding it with grinding would really only make it worse.
  7. The Witness by Jonathan Blow

I think you're reading a lot into that to see it as "false modesty". He's not saying that Braid isn't good either, he's just saying he doesn't want to get into that argument with the GAMES ARE JUST SUPPOSED TO BE FUN crowd who hated Braid.
  8. Hot scoops from inside EA - honest....!

If that $300 million figure is true, a middling end product isn't going to be making them any money.
  9. Books, books, books...

I was thinking about this and it's been too long since I've read some of them to have a good idea myself, but roughly 1. Neuromancer 2. Everything else not listed below 3. All Tomorrow's 4. Spook Country 5. Idoru 6. Virtual Light I like the overall plot arc of Count Zero more than Mona Lisa Overdrive, but there are parts of MLO (the little girl plus cyber assistant scenes) I like better than parts of CZ. The high points in the Burning Chrome short story collection are really good and I'd probably rank them higher than Neuromancer. There's probably some nostalgia at play in ranking Neuromancer first because I read it first. Difference Engine, I don't remember much about other than it was a neat setting. The bridge trilogy had it's moments, but I didn't much like Chevette or Rydell. I didn't really like Spook Country all that much despite liking Pattern Recognition. Not totally sure why. I think maybe there's a bit of a tourist feel to it like "here's a character and we'll follow them as they see a neat thing or see a neat thing happen" instead of the characters themselves participating in the neat thing. Oh, also of note which folks may have missed as it's not fiction was this article which Gibson did for Wired.
  10. Fable 3

Yo dawg, I heard you you like roleplaying games so we put a roleplaying game in your roleplaying game.
  11. Minecraft

What's extra annoying about that is if you try to build some super high mountaintop thingy (well, as high as you can currently make one), clouds pass right through your solid rock walls, making your interior a murky smoke-machined mess.
  12. Books, books, books...

I'm a pretty big Christie fan. It's worth noting that not all of the mysteries are intended to be "solve-able" by the reader, hence the notion of the the "fair play whodunnit" which, notably, the Christie mysteries, while they often adhere to the principle, do not ALWAYS do so.
  13. Books, books, books...

I've read all the Gibson stuff (including Agrippa when it was put on the web) except for Zero History (waiting for paperback). The bridge stuff is likewise probably my least favorite. Of those, Virtual Light is the one I probably like the least. I like the other sprawl stuff and Difference Engine, for whatever that's worth.
  14. So I bought the iPod touch version of Monkey Island

The controls for 2 are much better IMO.
  15. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow

I tried the demo on PS3. It looks really pretty, but the gameplay is very GoW derivative. Not really grabbing me. Also some of the narration they give Patrick Stewart to read is awful and enemies don't really seem to react visually enough to getting hit aside from the hit that kills 'em. It may also just be that I have too much on my gaming plate at the moment to be interested (Civ5, Deathspank:ToV, Minecraft and, soon, Fallout:Vegas & Costume Quest).
  16. Civilization 5

I just came across this: Anyone know anything else about this?
  17. Movie/TV recommendations

Ha! I got halfway through that comment thinking you were being super mean about the little girl. I really enjoyed the Fall mostly from the point of view of eye candy. The cinematography didn't strike me as being horrible. The shot of the swimming elephant was pretty awesome as was the black and white slow motion stuff at the beginning.
  18. Beyond Better & Evil!

I'll be buying this on the off chance that they're using sales of it to gauge level of interest in BG&E2. But I agree, it probably looked plenty sharp enough if you played it on PC. I played it on PS2.

  20. Movie/TV recommendations

Glad to hear it (it was me with the recommendation).
  21. Good Old GOG

Argh! It's a timezone thing isn't it? The solar system conspires against me! Or, you know, I could have actually read some of the comments this time...
  22. Civilization 5

So 3 games in, I'm finding it way easier to make gold in this version than prior ones. I think it may be because I'm relying on the "suggested improvement" for workers too much and they end up putting in too many trading posts at the expense of other things. It's kind of uncanny. I can annex a city and as soon as the unrest settles down, bootstrap it by buying up a ton of happiness buildings at once. As for the military, I always thought that the instant heal was a waste of an upgrade, but when you're actively pushing an attack, it's a huge godsend. Thought you'd bombarded my attacking force down to a single dude, China? Surprise! He cloned himself. Take that!
  23. Good Old GOG

    GoG has Planescape: Torment now!
  24. Tim hires Ron

What the? At least I put it in the right forum. Jeez.
  25. Ron Gilbert joins Doublefine!
