Idle Thumbs 142: Unmasking the Brain Burglar
juv3nal replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Haven't listened to the cast yet, but re: prototyping in twine, it's my understanding that Kentucky Route Zero actually integrates Twine directly into their actual game. Also have read that the recently Kickstarted Night in the Woods will be doing something along those lines. -
The canonical example seems to be the Beebo Brinker chronicles? Ann Bannon is pretty neat. There's a bunch of interviews with her here.

He's...Canadian? The rest of us are sorry. Yes, all 35 million or thereabouts. -

A someone who has spent a lot of time with UGC, there are a few gems, but there is also a ton of junk. And pretty much nothing that lets you make your own character is balanced properly if you want to go pure decker (there's one scenario which gives you a pre-gen decker which is ok).

You'll go far in the world of SEO and synergizing core competencies to leverage viral social media capitalization with an attitude like that! -
I guess, I'm just thinking that there are these institutions set up to prey on the poor (certain types of gambling, instant check cashing places etc.) and these kinds of businesses are successful now when their clientele has little money. I can't imagine that those businesses fare worse when you give people more money. At least, not in the short term. Although you'd hope people with more options eventually make better choices over time.

That's as may be, but don't you think it's possible that this could be down to a poorly designed and/or implemented system rather than an inherent flaw in the approach?

On reflection, I guess an argument against basic income is that people might blow any income you give them on things that are not food or shelter or health care and that a better alternative would be to provide those things more directly rather than just giving money.

If you're taking requests, I'd like to see a review of Longest Night (the free stargazing thingy for Night in the Woods). -
You can "rewind" the saves (each save contains every previous checkpoint, I think). When you're loading a save, "rewind" should be next to "delete" and "copy".

The notion that non-prose art is supposed to express a "message" is a complicated one. No doubt it can and does do so, but to the extent that it is a message that could be accurately boiled down into prose, I feel it tends to be doing something of a disservice to whichever medium it is. IMO, art is better when it is pushing at the limits of meaning (i.e. flirting with/being at the verge of incomprehensibility), and/or asking questions than it is when making "statements".
