  1. Books, books, books...

That's the book I've tried to finish like 5 times and have never made it through. Not because I dislike the writing style, but because I'll put it down for a bit and come back to it and have only the vaguest notion what is going on because my memory is terrible or something? Certainly there have been other books I've given up on and still more that I would encounter similar problems with if I tried to read them, but GR is the only one where I've actually made an effort to go back and try again. The last time I tried was at least a couple of years ago, maybe it's time to have another crack at it.
  2. Infinite Jest

    Seconded!
  3. Books, books, books...

I know it was a joke, but you can page through it online: http://daten.digitale-sammlungen.de/0005/bsb00050607/images/index.html?fip=193.174.98.30&id=00050607&seite=1
  4. Destiny

fyi Patricia Hernandez has been destiny-ing it up, so probably she would welcome more psn friends (I did VoG with her last night). her psn id is in this tweet here: https://twitter.com/xpatriciah/status/509885517794533376 maybe mention that you're a thumbs reader or something in case she's ignoring randos
  5. Movie/TV recommendations

    Strange Brew is Hamlet, sorta.
  6. Especially server-requiring MMO type things that have wound down where there was never enough interest from someone enterprising enough to hack together their own server/a server-less mode. That's stuff that likely will never be played again. BUT it's worth noting there are a lot of films that are gone too.
  7. re tyrian, it was pretty awesome for a top down shmup. It had a ton of secrets including streetfighter-like special move entry to do things like repel enemy fire.
  8. Movie/TV recommendations

Jean Pierre Melville is pretty great. Bob Le Flambeur, Le Doulos, & Le Cercle Rouge are worth checking out. edit: oh Un Flic as well.
  9. Destiny

Is it possible to 31 without any crota gear? I'm slowly levelling up a vendor chest piece that is uglier than my VoG chest piece because it has higher top end light but bleh it is uglier.
  10. Destiny

An orb of light is glowy thing usually generated by using your special ability. It reduces the cooldown for other players' specials if they run over them.
  11. The Great Debate: Legalization

Sure but in a world where edibles are a thing, there's the potential for concentrating refinement processes. I have no idea what's on the market or what could potentially in the future be on the market. *shrug* Would you get 100% pure THC out of that? No, but I'm pretty sure you could easily get stuff that is more potent than any plant and LD50 is just that LD50. I'm not going to roll the dice on a dosage that's, say, LD5 would you? (I do want to stress this is no reason for not legalizing as it is bunches safer than things like caffeine) edit: as another random bit of trivia, since I brought up edibles, the LD50 of capsaicin in mice is 47.2 mg/kg but you can buy pure capsaicin crystals
  12. The Great Debate: Legalization

That you cannot OD on weed by smoking it is probably true, that no one has OD'd on it ever might be true, but that you can't OD on it at all is false. LD50 for THC is a thing that exists, folks: source: https://www.erowid.org/plants/cannabis/thc_data_sheet.shtml edit: incidentally, that's talking about pure thc though so probably not going to get that outside of some lab setting, but still. that makes it about 4 times safer than caffeine, but still not impossible if taken orally or if there's some emergent market I'm unaware of in mainlining the stuff.
  13. also apparently nintendo is letting devs make titles that wont even run on the older 3ds, although I think the only confirmed example of that is the xenoblade port.
  14. oof I feel for ya, "we've" known about it since august.
  15. Speaking of uncles who worked at nintendo, my folks rented a house out to the Arakawas when they were in Vancouver and I had the same babysitter as their two daughters. They even had us out to their mansion in Bellevue once after they left Vancouver.

  17. Movie/TV recommendations

I've only watched a couple but I think it's pretty entertaining.

OBJECTION! (actually I have no idea whether its any good, but Miike is wacky at least)
  19. Holy crap! The worst I've had was a car that had the idle speed somehow ended up being too low so it would stall if you ever let your foot off the gas, but I still managed to get it to the service place by putting it in neutral and revving the engine when I had to be at a stop.
  20. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Honestly the most disturbing thing about the poetry is what he has to say in the author's preface about his previous book. if he considers that one "juvenilia, extraordinarily self-indulgent and, truly, not real poetry" I cringe to think of what it might be like.
  21. So re: Night in the Woods, Scott Benson is the guy behind But I'm a Nice Guy and Alec Holowka has worked on Aquaria and Towerfall. There is another one of these freebie thingies (Lost Constellation is pay what you want including zero), called Longest Night which can be accessed on their web site (below the screenshots, to the right of the soundtrack link).

  23. Twine Recommendations

@ashtonraze 's "Prom King (and other stories)" is pretty great. Contains both male and female frontal nudity for those of sensitive dispositions. http://www.ashtonraze.com/thepromking This doesn't really do it justice, but if pressed for a pithy summary I'd maybe say it's like dark high school noir told in a bit of a Rashomon style?
  24. Awesome Games Done Quick 2015

The kingdom hearts run was pretty amazing just for the amount of skill involved in the fighting. Having never played the game at a high level, it's ridiculous some of the stuff they pull off in situations where any dropped* combo hit means getting hit and getting hit once = death. *technically, they often intentionally drop the last hit of a "combo" because doing the finisher would knock the enemy out of range for a followup hit, but you get what i mean.
  25. Movie/TV recommendations

Yeah I'm with JonCole I enjoyed Luther, but I'm also not a big stickler for believability so far as that story is concerned. It struck me as basically a "comic book" type thing from the get go and I just rolled with it.
