I don't get how one little ship with overshadowed tech can do so much damage. weird. *** Anyway, new game; who has joined and used a different name? We're sitting at 9 right now and I don't know who isn't making it? Anyway, looks like we have openings for anyone wanting to join in.
  2. E3 2010

Indeed, i love kirby and considering this will be on the wii... oh my the jokes. Kirby Sucks his way onto the Wii. Kirby Sucks Nintendo's Wii. Kirby,... well you get the picture. edit: oOoO; Kirby inhales a black wii!
  3. Boy, I was hestitant to write anything here since my advice is find another career option, lol. Glad to see more people don't mind crushing the dreams of teenagers (I say this as a good thing). I think the currentl business model of the gaming industry is so infant and volitile at the moment I honestly cannot recommend anyone working in it for more then a decade. The workplace practices and laws that condone/support these practices haven't really been figured out to a high enough degree to benefit both employer and employee to a exceptional level. Many people can function in the different states of this industry, whether it be your typical grueling 120 hour work weeks or the malaise of larger companies of clocking in your 9-5; but for someone like me and a good number of other people it's pretty unexceptable. It may have something to do with a naive expectation or just a certain standard for quality of life, but I dont' like working 80-120 hours a week for months on someone elses project or working very little, getting no ownership over what I work on for 40 hours a week. Not all places are the same and there could be middle grounds out there somewhere, but they are few and I'll have to call them atypical. It seems we are following various other business practices as a model, but our product seems to be so much different then theres. I'm a game "artist" and it seems like this side of the industry can be easily compared to the VFX industry where we work long hours trying to make good looking cg. But with games there are so many other complications and other teams of programers, designers, etc... that effect the job and overal product. Furthermore the government(at least Canada) doesn't recognize us seperately, so for some bizarre reason we got classified with I.T proffessionals which has the by product of condoning some really shoddy business practices; Not getting paid Over-time. The industry argues that if it had to pay OT that they couldn't make products, but anyone who has been through at least one regular production can tell you that is garbage; most of the OT I've had to do is due to a poor business model and production schedule. It has nothing to do with getting a higher quality game or on schedule product if it had a proper way of organization and creating it in the first place. Anyway, back on track, yeah, if they like games I'd stay out of the gaming industry. It's not about not being worth the money or working a lot; because if you love what you do, why would you care about working all the time? It really comes down to the industry not being like what they think it is. I taught for two years and the average student had no idea what they were getting into until they learned enough to be doing it every day; and even that was a simulated experience in school. So after they dumped all that money into something to find out what it's actually like they found out they didn't like it so ended up with a poor quality portfolio and either unemployment after leaving or a crummy job that makes them really hate it even more. I think I've worked the full spectrum of types of places(maybe not super indy place, yet) where I had a work/home balance, one with a work work balance, and now with the peon in an ant colony 9-5 place. After all of which I'm coming off burnt out, which I heard is what happens around this time in a persons career. I've seen some success and I don't really have anything to be down about to be fair and really have gotten close to getting my dreams jobs from time to time and with a little more work(end of the year, next year tops) I could probably achieve those. But at this point, I'm honestly just beaten and broken and couldn't give a shit, I'm close to leaving the industry and doing something else soon. Oh, and yeah, QA is crap. Maybe after ten years they will become an Ass. producer and start moving up by taking out their frustration by being a complete douchebag, but it's really a 1:100 type situation.
  4. Flotilla

http://www.giantbomb.com/quick-look-flotilla/17-2444/ I'm going to be a massive nerd and say this was hillarious at how bad they are and how much they didn't understand the combat. Their first fight that they lost with the three battleships actually can be won; I've done it a couple times. Then for some reason they find a bug where it stuck one player on the enemy side, so I'm not sure if thats a bug or if it's because the other guy fought him. Its weird. I never played 2 player so it's pretty hilarious to watch.
  5. E3 2010

Yeah I suppose its just a matter of perspective. I like the games nintendo makes, but their e3 presentations for the past 3-4 years have been completely bizarre and for a totally different consumer base then the one I am part of or for those that attend E3. It might be the reason why I'm a little harsh on them with this because I would have figured they would have at least tried to tune their presentations for the base that's actually going to be watchign these. I hope zelda is shown in more forms then a cg trailer at E3; but I'm still doubting it purely based on track record.
  6. Neptune's Bountiful Pride

I find the diplomacy much like Civilization only a lot more complex because your dealing with people. Most of us are role playing, but we still have ourselfs that guide our actions and everyone calculates situations differently. Like I didn't think Sombre would attack me and I've gone through 100 scenarios on what he is up to and still haven't figured it out. *** New Game: Who all has joined so far? A lot of people aren't using their idlethumbs names so I don't know who is missing. With that I think we may have a few openings if anyone else is interested in joining. I really want to get a new game going to try a different playstyle/role. My creepy insect race is getting tiresome to look at.
  7. E3 2010

Not to be a downer, but I bet not. Knowing Nintendos E3 track record and remembering something about how development on that was going extremely slow or something, I think it will be more bizarre speeches from their ceos and maybe a miyamoto appearance just to reassure us they have someone there actually cares about games. Really? Is there another conference where the three largest hardware manufactures have 1-2 hour keynotes and all the major publishes have smaller venues announcing the next 2 years of releases and plans that shape the industry? All the while this is being streamed live in ever gaming news site in the world? If there is, please let me know because I missed the memo. Not to harp on this specific topic, but I love how people say E3 isn't E3 anymore; I really don't get that. Because it's still the conference with the most news and the exact same set up(in terms of companies conferences) as it always was and is still the only venue where they all do it at once. The only difference now, I suppose, is some of the larger publishers have their own thing going on during the year and other conventions are popular as well. Well E3 is really a publisher/marketing run event. So anything that will work, it becomes a circus really. Personally I agree with you, but since the thing is such a gong show anyway it's not surprising they have a bunch of strippers running around handing out swag.
  8. E3 2010

Ahahahaha, oh man it's hilarious to still see people actually expecting something gamer-esq from Nintendo at E3. Personally I love the keynote conferences. They are this bizarre theater act talking about video games and E3 has never disappointed on that, in whatever form it manifests itself.
  9. Neptune's Bountiful Pride

Im cool with waiting if everyone else is.
  10. Neptune's Bountiful Pride

We realized that due to the efficency of the Great Space-Republic's fleets that not every species may see the treachery that Sombre and his oxygen breathing society has produced. So we decided to show documented evidence that has only been edited to hide the numbers of current forces so that their efforts will not be hurt in displaying this.
  11. These weapons are better than nature!

I love how the dude is demonstrating it in a tie and dress pants. It feels so much more modern and professional then if he were to do it in a tunic.
  12. Red Dead Redemption

    Totally separate.
  13. Civilization 5

Does anyone find it funny that a lot of people when hearing Civ5 requires steam get angry? My reaction was the complete opposite; "Steam and Civ? NEAT!" It might be because I planned on buying it through steam regardless and pretty much every other pc game I buy, but really it's not a big deal. Apparently you can resell the hardcopies if you keep the reciept as well.
  14. Neptune's Bountiful Pride

Me too. ****** I would love to read post mortems from everyone, long or short. I find that the whole game experience is totally based on your point of view and whos around you. theres like a million stories go on in the I don't like games galaxy right now and I only know what was going on in my little sector. Like Toblix and Boris seemed to be playing their own version for the longest time, but I see that territory shrinking from decap and Jennoa now... really curious as to what went on there. Fascinating game. ***** THE NEW GAME I'm willing to host today or tommorrow, so lets get this thing going. 01) Jhriad 02) DIUM 03) Nicholololas 04) Marek 05) dibs 06) bd_monkey (?) 07) Reikon 08) Thunderpeel 09) Murdoc 10) F4T C4T 11)Wurtzi 12]Toblix Edit: Alright, done. Sorry if anyone new wanted to join, I'm sure there will be more games in the future. I'll send out the passwords through PM on the forum later today and whoever is the last person to join will start the game(Tommorowish probably)
  15. Alan Wake

Pretty sure a lot of it was scraped along the way due to budget and not wanting to go out of business. I mean it was just in December they said they were going to take a break and start up again in the new year; I have to imagine wanting to stay in business meant them cobbling together a game as fast as they could with the parts that were mostly finished. Thats not to say the game can't be good, it's just unfortunate. Even their tech engine display video from the other day shows that it was meant to be an open world game and is pretty powerful to pull it off. So I can imagine that if it does well enough a sequel that might include those lost features would happen. Sort of like how I thought Brutal Legend ended up; pay for the first one in hopes for a better sequel.
  16. Alan Wake

Is it just me or is it weird reviews are coming out 2-3 weeks before the game does? Also I am ok with whatever cheesy reference Lake took inspiration from because at the end of the day its not modern army dude spitting out James Cameron gibberish and its really well executed(opposed to poor examples such as deadly premonitions)
  17. Hock and Sock leaves Ubisoft

Where would you have put it? It's not a video game... unless... Ubisoft Presents, Jorder Mechner's Resigning Ubisoft Spectacular, Extravaganza, Featuring Klint Socking!!!
  18. Flotilla

Or an idea level? I mean that universe friggin rocks! edit: Wait, how did you not finish Gravity Bone? I played the last level a dozen times thinking I did something wrong, lol.
  19. Deadly Premonition

Watching the endurence run on giant bomb and this game is simply amazing. not amazing enough for me to actually waste my time playing it, just waste my time watching the hilarity. There's always a new gold nugget of awesomeness per video.
  20. Treme

It isn't fast paced, that's fine, but there isn't A story. It's more just character stories but I find there are way too many characters to properly follow so having a broad goal to keep it going would be nice. Like the wire had a huge cast of characters and each had their own thing going on, but it was all tied together with the investigation. Imagine the wire without the investigation and about 2% of the social subtext. Also don't get me wrong, it's still well done for whatever it is, it's just not gripping from the get go and I'm wondering if it can keep my attention; so far I don't think so. Most tv shows will figure out what they are about in the second and third season, but if the foundation is less then interesting for me I don't bother. This is just what it feels like to me, I'm not applying it to everyone. @brkl; alright, maybe it's just me, I like Goodman but he doesn't blend into roles very much, he either Dan from Rosan or Walter from lebowski (in other words a guy or a sweary guy) Treme seems to be channeling Walter more often then not.
  21. Treme

I'm pretty unimpressed with the series so far. It could just be because I don't care about New Orleans(though its a cool setting) or Jazz. So it just might be my interests but I'd rather have seen cops or journalists in NO. So far the whole thing feels like a reason to have cameos from musicians I don't know and people from the Wire and other HBO series. John Goodman is also very out of place. The casting just seems odd, like the "unknowns" are actually too well known and the rest seems to be remnants from other HBO series. This might be more of my issue then anything, but when I see people who have played iconic roles(and pretty much every main character has) then all I see is the actor playing another person rather then the character they were supposed to be embodying(like they did with their iconic role) I'm still watching it, but so far it feels like a series made by someone else with the wire dude's name attached and he gets his 5 minutes of social commentary into an episode then the rest is either music interludes or someone else's show. I like bits about it and episode 3 has been my favorite so far, but something about it just isn't gripping me immediately like other shows I am in love with have. You can say it's a character show and it is, but so was the Wire in a lot of ways. But I dunno, there seems to be too many characters to get anything substantial out of an episode so it feels like we're treading water in most of these, because out of 4 episodes not a lot has progressed with any of them. A bit disappointed that it's no Wire(yet?) or Generation Kill; I also can name several HBO shows I'd rather have seen not cancelled then have seen Treme get made... but those are unrelated things, but my brain feels it necessary to connect it. I think The Wire was the greatest tv series ever made, so maybe my expectations for this was a little high?
  22. Neptune's Bountiful Pride

HA, so yeah apparently my inexperience to last past 4 cycles is starting to show in the current game because I am not prepared for the long game, hehe. So I can host the next if dibs is too busy. 01) Jhriad 02) DIUM 03) Nicholololas 04) Marek 05) dibs 06) bd_monkey (?) 07) Reikon 08) Thunderpeel 09) Murdoc 10) F4T C4T Anyone else?
  23. MechWarrior 4 re-released for free

Because it's free? I always like the idea of the mechwarrior games, but I spent more time drawing pictures and thinking of cool scenarios with giant robots then playing the games. Something never really gelled right. I think the scale always felt off(This is the issue with most games in trying to create giant objects, it never feels right in a lot of them) I'd love to see a warhawk type mp game with mechs and drop ships and such, but again, I think I like the idea more then any execution so far.
  24. Yeah I had to look up that Big Rigs thats just sad.
  25. Neptune's Bountiful Pride

Oh neat, I just noticed there is a "View last 7 days" button that gives you a Civ 4 end game chart about things. Now all we need is the ability to see replays and save them.
