  1. L.A. Noire

I've had a really shitty career then. But yeah, the treatment didn't sound good, but sounds like what was going on in every Rockstar studio. The treatment is outrageous and isn't typical of the industry though, so discouraging it is always good. However, it seems like this style of treatment is coming from a very small group in the industry and as long as they are successful, it'll never change their attitude. I'm more focused on the standard of living stuff that is common throughout the industry, they say its the only way games can be made, but its fundamentally exploitative(sometimes in big ways, most of the time small ways) to the workers. However, in my experience, which isn't the be and end all, so its just an educated opinion, it has always seemed to be this standard in the industry simply because its a young and most studios haven't figured out a good balance. It's a bit akin to the start of the industrial revolution; workers and business owners had to find a middle ground so everyone is happy. I don't think the games industry(and this probably goes for all creative for profit\technology industries right now) have really figured it out and no one appears to be really interested in improving it.
  2. L.A. Noire

http://www.shacknews.com/article/69093/igda-to-investigate-la-noires Im just confused why the IGDA decided to single this out this one time when that's pretty much the same way every Rockstar game is made among many other companies in the industry. “Reports of 12-hour a day, lengthy crunch time, if true, are absolutely unacceptable and harmful to the individuals involved, the final product, and the industry as a whole,” Brian Robbins, chair of the IGDA Board of Directors This is just hysterical to me.
  3. Prince of Persia 3: The Clunky Ass

Okay, I should have said wasn't done to death like it is none, it still happened. And yes, with everything else attached to the direction they were just doing something ridiculous with the franchise, but art direction alone I think could have worked if they treated everything else with a little tact. And yes, looking at the 2004 releases, dark seemed to be the in thing, I guess it was to combat the happy time that was 2003.
  4. L.A. Noire

No, actually they aren't, in a legal sense, game professionals fall under some weird regulatory status where if we're paid by a salary or a straight contract(which is every single one of us) we don't get paid overtime. I have never heard of a game artist in a full time job getting paid over time in any country. This pretty much sounds like a typical Rockstar studio, without being a full fledged rockstar studio. At least rockstar gives out massive bonuses based on royalties (assuming you stay with the studio) afterwards, I wonder if Team Bondi has the same set up? I wouldn't necessary blame the studios for these practices, I blame the governments that support these laws and allow the companies to exploit workers. With that said, if they did pay us overtime, you wouldn't see very many games being made anywhere with those laws. Awesome system isn't?
  5. Tribes: Ascend

Fucking SOLD. God damn, I love Tribes.
  6. Neptune's Bountiful Pride 6!

Well just judging from the tech trading I can see I'm f@$%ed now, hehe, well that was fun. Bring on Neptune 8!
  7. Prince of Persia 3: The Clunky Ass

I must be the only one that liked the art direction of what I remember seeing from Warrior Within. I'll start out by saying I never played the game because everything else made me sad. But I applaud Ubisoft for taking such a huge direction change in the art from Sands of Time, I thought it looked good and was really neat on how they were trying to change things from up from the mystical fairy tale into a dark consequence of the first game... remember this was before every game was dark and fucking brown. But yeah, from the sounds of it they took it too far, made a shit character and story with gameplay nothing like the first. I just liked the idea of making a sequel with a completely different tone and palette.
  8. L.A. Noire

So... it's a game by Rockstar? Also, I couldn't find the details without reading in detail(aha) but its common industry practice to leave anyone who isn't with the company at release off of the credits list, it's a a favor if they add you to the special thanks section.
  9. The ASTOUNDING thread of science!

This was my impression as well. I'd like to know more about what he was actually doing instead of the all the filler stuff that didn't seem to have anything to do with it. That or the talk went way over my head rather then him failing to talk about what was interesting about this.
  10. L.A. Noire

Yeah I feel the same Thunderpeel, I can pop in GTA or RDR at any given time and just run around and have some fun, I doubt I'll ever play the main missions again. I just dont see myself ever playing LA Noire again; just not that kind of game. I still haven't even finished it actually, most people don't recommend that I do, lol. I just remember putting it down and haven't picked it up again, even though I did enjoy the time I spent with it.
  11. Recently completed video games

Portal 2. Yay, it was portal! Writing and story was great, loved the whole vibe and the new mechanics were really cool. This is going to sound really lame, but a lot of really wasn't that challenging like the first. The puzzle element was way better, but there wasnt any sense of speed or danger that the first offered, portal 1 was a really good hybrid of puzzle and fps reflexes. I guess it's a better game for it, but I always like the moments where within a few short seconds I'd be at my goal and because of the furious clicking and turning I really had no idea how I arrived there. It was only until the last actual test chamber where they introduced the puzzel + reflex element and it was really basic. Oh and one last thing, FMV at the end was a bit disappointing, kind of took me out of the action and I started to remember Fallout 2. Other than that, it's amazing.
  12. Neptune's Bountiful Pride 6!

Oh it is fun! Ok, say we kick this game off on Friday incase we get a couple more by then? Small/Large game? Maybe with a small amount of people we're better off in a small map, also goes quicker so we don't lose interest, as is sometimes the case on the larger ones.
  13. L.A. Noire

I was going to take a closer look at the game to see the engine mechanics, but I decided to just ask; it's not rage. I guess most of the feel comes from euphoria.
  14. L.A. Noire

Yeah I couldn't say which is correct, Thunderpeel. I heard the same thing about them using their own engine, but if that isn't RAGE, I'll eat my hat. (I dont own a hat) My only guess just based on playing the game is the production was a sorted affair and they eventually either integrated the engines architecture eventually, or just switched over at one point.
  15. L.A. Noire

RAGE is Rockstars Engine and Euphoria work with it. LA Noire was built on RAGE and used Euphoria. Further, Rockstar was using the FX house that did the facial mocap for Benjamin Button since Lost and the Damned and LA Noire shows they really nailed it, mostly. Im not sure how middleware Euphoria is these days, because so far only Rockstar uses it now. I heard a rumour that they made an exclusive deal and/or bought them a year ago, but no announcement was ever made. I don't know how big of a difference it makes to other people, but as someone whoes worked with the system and plays most of their games, it's really hard to compare it to anything else... its just so smooth and dynamic.
  16. King Arthur's Gold

new Updates, lag is mostly fixed, still wonky, new collision errors, but all the new features are pretty sweet. nice little light radius makes me want a night map and talk of CTF mode. If there was only a dedicated server in North America, I'd be having a lot of fun, hehe.
  17. Neptune's Bountiful Pride 6!

Maybe a super tiny game with 3-4 people? Might just wait a bit, hehe.
  18. E3 2K11

If you think the American market is bad, spend a month up here in Canada, unless things have changed over the years(I don't pay attention... and from the sounds of it it has, because that's pretty much what we've been saying here since the internet began. *** Oof that worst of E3 video brought back the recent, horrible pain in my head.
  19. inFamous

Until the sequel which made you look all wicked bad if you were a jerk... but it's a series that is magically de evolving with it's sequels.
  20. Is it more brown and bloomy then Battlefield 2? That was brown and bloomy. I also liked the birds that flew away when I was running, hope theres more of those.
  21. Mass Effect 3

Not to sound like a negative nelly, because I loved Mass Effect 1, but Mass Effect 2 kind of showed a new path for the series and it's one Im not really interested in. Here's hoping 3 will be alright so I can lay it to rest.
  22. Don't get me wrong destructibility was cool, but it just felt like a smaller game and very claustrophobic for some reason. I never got the same sense I did in other battlefields with a commander issue orders across a ton of squads and feeling like a small part of a larger whole. It felt more like a few crews running around playing solider. Battlefield 2 felt like a well(or poorly) orchestrated war, bad company felt like a war game. Also, the movement and shooting felt kind of weird, I want to call it consoley? It's the same feeling I get with L4d2 and Portal 2 vs the originals.
  23. Duke Nukem Forever Canned [and then not]

I'm not saying there wasn't self funding going, but the publisher did invest money or else they wouldn't own it, not to mention there may have been private investors too. There was also that odd transfer of property between 3dRealms and some new company right at the end? It sounded odd and illegal. My memory obviously isn't the best so I'll just mention that's all I remember and shut up.
  24. Duke Nukem Forever Canned [and then not]

They stayed in business for over a decade and employees got paid, I'm not sure who got screwed over there, except the publisher.
  25. Duke Nukem Forever Canned [and then not]

I just assumed DNF production was just an investment scam anyway, to look for any logic in their methods beyond that would just be silly. It kept them in business to dick around all day sort of kind of, but mostly, pretending to make a game.
