Hehehe, I was thinking the same thing, my friends and I tried making one in high school after we futzed around "modding" UO. It was about as crazy as this thing was, so I have a place in my heart for go nowhere projects; I'd love to see one actually try to get made one day, I think it would turn out to be something like Cargo: The Quest for Gravity. Funny story, we knew the brother of Ray Muzyka, which was pretty cool guy, but he encouraged us to make something more grounded. We never ended up making anything playable, but it gave me a direction in life at the time, so that's cool. Anyway, point of the story, I think ludicrous go nowhere projects aren't a bad thing, they just don't need millions of dollars for what the people making get out of them.

I don't know why everyone is so cynical and this is coming from a registered cynic. It's a go nowhere project, but I'd like to imagine if it wasn't, because, really, from just what's been written it sounds like the craziest god damn thing to see. So I don't know why anyone wouldn't want this thing to get made.

Well that wasn't EXACTLY a shadow run game, it was a multiplayer first person game using the fiction of Shadow run.
-
Ah fuck. edit: I like the idea of Shadow Run and I know there is a good game in it, but I'd really like to see a more modern interpretation, though kickstarter doesn't seem to be the place to get that done. Even if it was 2d, I'd like to have seen them tackle something slightly more ambitious... but who knows, they haven't sold me to donate, but I'll be watching out for the final product.

I'm a notch skeptic (cynic?) but those talking points are a good start to win my attention.

I'm leaning more towards agreeing with this guy's statement. I think he took a hard stance on the issue, but I don't think he's entirely wrong. He even said he appreciates the occasional cartoon or video game but then draws the line with books, which he has a point, but I'll disagree and say if it's ok to watch the occasional cartoon, play a game, then it's alright for the occasional book as well. But I think the main point that he was trying to make is that is should be occasional. My generation has a high population of adult children, I am one of them, and the generation after us, from what I can see, is farther along being children their entire lives. I know it would be great to counter his argument about games, and there are some counter points there, but personally, I'm growing out of games because they aren't growing up with me. I'll watch a half an hour cartoon because it's easily consumable, but I won't read teen fiction that takes me a few days. So with that in mind, I also wont sit and play a childish game for 4-8 hours either, which is why I'm playing games less and less these days. I don't think its entirely wrong to enjoy media for children and it's cool that society is accepting of adults doing such things, but the hard line Joel has taken isn't terrible either as it doesn't take a genius to see where civilization is heading if it goes to hard in one direction.

Nothing too amazing, but reminds me of Star Wars

Erm, I enjoyed the first one as a kid, but for some reason it just feels way sleezier when it isn't in pixelated art... also I'm nearly 30 so I don't know if I'd find it as amusing.

Turns out a guy I sit next to did a solo project, which is really cool, it's about a rabbit that uses magic to make people miss the bus. http://whatwouldmolydeux.com/display.php?GameID=209 I'm crossing my fingers for a 2013 edition so I can participate.

Hm, this looks interesting, terrible name aside, it could be really cool. I liked Skyrim, I like the theory of Dark Souls, it's just in the handling of mechanics and difficulty... also the context of why I am doing certain things. *Also after the giant bomb quick look of Asura's Wrath, that game didn't *look* that bad either.

ah thanks Jayel, I never looked into that, just had an opinion when playing.

I'm a huge Civ fan, but honestly didn't like Civ V. I see where they're taking the series and it's cool, but its a fresh start and rough around the edges for it's premier. It feels like it was one step forward, two steps back, but it's a new start for the series so it'll only get better. Also, it might just be my perception, but it felt like the trading system in V was downright broken. Compare that to Civ IV and it doesn't stand up. Civ IV was practically perfect and had the benefit of years of previous systems to build on. I also liked the religion system in IV, really missed it in V. I think the Thumbs talked about this stuff at some point before V was released. But maybe V is better to start with because it's more user friendly?

Hm, doesn't surprise me, but always figured it would happen at the less than reputable places.

I'd try to raise 2 mil if he stays out of it. Not to be a dick, but its 2012 and Obsidian is a company I have little respect for.

I'm in the same bucket, mike, except I haven't seen or know about the last season of Lost and I aims to keep it that way.

Kind of wished I never read that, even if I don't have plans to play me3(which feels weird because I was a super fan of 1) but I knew what I was coming here for. That's just disappointing to hear and very reminiscent to Deus Ex (a game I liked, but would have liked more if I didn't finish it).

Ha, Yeah, its funny how memory works, because the HD version is how the stranger looks like in my memory. Good for them for making a proper HD version, it was alright a good looking game they made look better. In fact, I think it warrants a purchase, I was also a fan of the movement feel in the original, just not the 3rdperson/1st person thing. I'd also be more impressed if someone had the source art of all the cinematic models and the studio got access to it after 4-5 years. That's almost unheard of.

Yeah, it would screw up the weighting, but that shouldn't be a big deal(takes like an a few hours to weight a character these days at most)and, yeah, deforming a more complex mesh on a really simple rig might not work... but I've know some pretty ingenious riggers that could easily use the old rig, the old animations, and add a few extra bones to compensate for the added geo. So I don't think the overhead to do that sort of thing would be terrible consuming. Facial animation would be a whole different ball park though and I honestly don't know how simple those rigs were back in xbox days. Did Oddworld actually do that? I just remember Strangers wrath looking pretty damn smooth back in the day and figured it was the same stuff. Also, animation gets compressed, which is usually why a lot of it kind of sucks in games, I'm wondering if there is ever a case where they could go back to the original data to re-compress it with modern technology and specs.

I know you trust your friend, but I dunno, that sounds like a lot of conclusions based on speculation. It's not out of the realm of possibility, but maybe the art director was just making small chat?
-
Ah ok, I haven't had too many run ins with it, but I figured it was just out of date since most of the time it always screws up on my system or I get an annoying pop to update the thing at the worst possible times. I just figured in 2012 there would be newer and better out there, so was just wondering.

Not to start something, but, why is java still used?

I don't know... mooses. You city folk probably never ran into them, I'll take an earth quake over a moose encounter any day. Also, congrats! **** Unfortunately Canadian law is wildly strange when it comes to immigration, we practically let anyone in, which is a good thing, until you get married to them, in which case it's a toss up. My friend from highschool married an American and after a six months trying to get her proper documentation he ended up having to leave Canada to the US... took him about a month, or something, to get his American citizenship. So, yeah, we probably should fix that, but we have a few other larger concerns at the moment...

So are spectators allowed or could you use any volunteers? (speaking about SF specifically)

Sweet, good news. Thanks!
