I'd be in for that..... damnit, look what your doing?! When's Sim City 5 out? I need something to distract me. -
Dwarf Fortress- Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the rum.
Murdoc replied to Sombre's topic in Video Gaming
That's awesome. Also, stop talking about this, I love this game, but my visual side really wants graphics and a better interface that I'll never get, so I have to make a stand and not get sucked back in! -
It also concerns me that it will bottom out the "big" industry. I mean look at what happened last time around, half the companies went under or consolodated under 3-4 larger ones and a lot of the jobs that would have been created were just sent over seas as outsourcing contracts. When it takes 1000 people to make one assassins creed on the 360, where does it go from there? People need to start figuring out better tools for content creation, not just compiling it an editor. *** When I said CryEngine and Farcry 1 can do "this". This was refering to texture blending. And by blunt force, I meant it's all housed in unique shaders(more or less) and is a pain in the ass to set up for every combination of intersections in most games and is expensive in terms of memory, gpu, and artists time. Hence the mega texture system alievates a lot of set up time and creates a standard memory overheard that is easily workable from the get go. Which is exactly the reason RAGE was gorgeous in its blends and every other game ever only has splatterings of it.

I share the same thoughts, a few years ago it became a thing to take a medicore game, make it coop, then it sold like hotcakes. Here's hoping the industry is moving on and when coop is added it's actually good and meaningful. I think there has been some great examples that show this, but they are usually on already really good games.
-
It isn't the only way, but it certainly provided artists tools, freedom and general performance gains to do so. CryEngine, even Farcry 1 can do this, so can Unreal, but the performance to do this on many surfaces hasn't been possible because its basically a brute force method... in both CryEngine and Unreal. We'll get more ram, but to continue to use a brute force method is just going to eat up a lot of it that could be applied to other things, I'd suspect that is the reason why the tech demo didn't distinctively show this off. Cool to hear about Carmack, hope his pull is still strong enough within the company to keep that (I know it sounds stupid, but they were going to license the engine out and are no longer doing so since Bethseda, so, I wonder with zero knowledge of what goes on)
-
Can anyone even do mega textures now that Bethseda bought ID? They sort of created the concept so I wonder if it isn't some patented thing no one else can develop. Also UE4 has been sent out to some developers from what I hear. *** I think LA Noire really set the bar for facial animation , I believe there is no dispute in that, GTA4 and Max Payne are probably the pinacles of gameplay animation(Euphoria) but obviously in this generation the resources to do both at a very high degree weren't there and all those games were coming from Rockstar, so I don't know why there is such a low priority to mimic these concepts from other studios.

Lit particle FX are cool and make everything blend a lot better. The biggest missing thing throughout this video is the lack of blending between elements, you still can spot out the harsh polygonal edges between objects in more than a few places. I figured after RAGE this would be top priority for any engine because it's one my biggest problems in game environments. Tech demo was neat, the art wasn't great though, but shows potential. The pipeline stuff to get everything in real time is exciting, but not new to a lot of other engines. The lighting is finally catching up to whats possible today, so that's good, it was the biggest thing holding back the current UDK. Not much in terms of animation advancement was mentioned... or did I miss that? Needs to be equivilent to euphoria or GTFO. Not a lot of reflection examples which is a big step in "realism" I still hold the pure visual bar with Crysis and honestly this didn't look that far beyond.... even though I'm sure there is more stuff going on, the results didn't "blow me away" Still cool though, wish I was working on a "next gen" game right now, stupid E3 teases. *I feel your pain castrop; when I can't tell Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, or Splinter Cell apart there is some serious problems in the main stream. With that said, UDK is practically free and if you're not trying to make millions, a lot of indies could make some cool short games with it. ** I think Star Wars is using a 3rd party lighting system if they are using UE3.

Thanks, I'll give it an honest shot. I was honest when I said Iw as confused, didn't mean to make it sound so negative, I just did't understand, so hopefully these casts will give me some insight. Thanks Orvidos!

Maybe I've never looked passed the wild headline comments and cursing to really give him any benefit of being intelligent.
-
Basically a proof of concept right now, so who knows what the gameplay is. That mini map is going to have to change, because it's disorienting as hell to even watch, hehehe. Also, why would anyone be asking David Jaffes opinion on anything? I'm just confused by that.
-
Did anyone see Synedoche, Newyork? (if not, see it) but it reminds me a bit of that.
-
We're in a Yeah I think it's because we're heading towards the end of the cycle. So everything that's being made, we heard about, the few things for the next round that were shown had to keep a low profile because the manufactures weren't ready to annouce the actual hardware. Next year will be the big annoucement event.
-
I sort of give Splinter Cell a pass on this, not because I enjoy it or whatever, but because coming from French Canadians it seems more like parody or at least an over indulgant fantasy... sort of like Team America. The problem though isn't that its so absurd that it can't be recognized, but that everything else is just as absurd, so without any context of the people making it, it turns into the same old death to american enemies, hoowah and is no better then a modern warfare.

Well, it's not really my shit, but a good friends, so here's the speel. I went back to art school last year and met a lot of great people, one of them, Chris, is in an advertising competition right now. Anyway, he wants to win to use the proceeds for school, so I figured I'd try to give him a bump here. I never do this and sorry if it's a bit contrived, it's the first and last, so just check it out, it's a cool poster anyway. Anyway, if you could, vote Chris, I'd appreciate it. http://www.fluevog.com/code/fc_finalists.php Can also check out the poster on his blog: http://dedinsky.tumblr.com/

I felt the same way last year when there was no mention... or was it the year before that? Watch Dogs looks okay, but really if I look at Driver 5, Assassins Creed, and a couple of other Ubisofts offerings, I see this melting pot of ideas into one game... not really a bad idea. Though, I'm sure that's running on PC/next consoles and while there are some really nice things about it, it doesn't look like that big of a leap especially side by side with the last of us.
-
I cant wait to see it, because after last year they really set the bar high/low.
-
The conferences are split between the days usually. Watching the Microsfot one right now... I kind of just stopped caring after the last few years, I've heard the line "Never has been a better time" for the last 5 years yet I end up playing less and less games every year.... so E3 just might not be for me anymore. edit: can anyone tell me the difference in gameplay between Splinter Cell, Tomb Raider, and Resident Evil? Didn't those use to be seperate games?
-
Thats funny because I respect his design decisions but everything else about the one game I played made me feel like it was super contrived manufactured pretension, so the comment doesn't suprise me. Thanks for the link, never knew this existed.
-
Until he opens his mouth every 5 minutes and comments on things your doing. Also agree that people shouldn't jump to conclusions, I expect the gameplay to be very similiar to FarCry 2 and be fun, it's just a fact we have to accept it won't be FarCry 2 and that they are pushing narrative and characters this time.

Oh my tablet is running win 7 so Neptunes Pride can run in the full Star Trek-esq glory I always imagined it to... except at a shitty frame rate. Congrats AteBit and berniesbc, it SOUNDED like a really interesting game. Sadly many of these things end up being anticlimatic. Who was blue anyhow?
-
Yeah, not my best game, lol. I think it was the fact I couldn't make moves on the weekend, so I roll into work Monday morning and start trading tech... then looked at the map, so I was being an idiot too, lol. This was a pretty interesting sounding game though, all these considered, trickery, alliances and blood feuds. Pretty fun, a shame about blue though. Also, I'm in for the another since my entry into this one was shorter than expected. Also I have my tablet working at home again, so I can check in on the weekends.

The Cave: Ron Gilbert's Double Fine Game (A Tim Schafer Production) (Not Double Fine Adventure)
Murdoc replied to Nappi's topic in Video Gaming
http://www.shacknews.com/article/73950/the-cave-coming-from-ron-gilbert-and-double-fine Looks alright, I guess, I like the mood they are trying to go for but I'm just not feeling it's entirely successful at selling it like the concept art did... which tends to be the case for a lot of games, hehehe. -
This content (DLC) isn't a new concept anymore, therefore companies with foresight can plan, schedule, and budget for this content WHILE the game is being made. The budget and production schedule for this content is SEPERATE from the development of the released game and often the team members are a seperate team from the main development team, sometimes it's an entirely different company (contractor). It's not so much bullshit as it is dumb marketing because people get riled up and don't like the idea of it being on a single disk. So it's really about packaging, not what's actually going on behind the scenes. The only thing that will ever change is that they stop putting it on a single disk. Instead, they'll make another disk or have it downloadable and charge you more for doing so, even though budget, production, and schedule is exactly the same as before. The more people speak up about the fact it happens to be on the same disk the more they will eventually shoot themselves in the foot.
