  1. Dammit Steam

My Steam window regularly looks like the attached. Right-click "Reload" works but still displays blank. Network Monitor tells me Steam is connecting and transferring data, and View Source gives me a complete page; it just doesn't seem to actually be rendering anything in the Steam client. Obviously I could investigate and search Google and the Steam fora and find a solution, but right now I'd rather moan about it here. So here I am.
  2. Homophobic?

    Was this Freudian?
  3. Homophobic?

    Ouch. BURNSAUCE.
  4. Homophobic?

Vaguely relatedly! My undergrad thesis, back in '05, was about male-receptive anal intercourse in m/f relationships - i.e. pegging - and the "queering" of heterosexual sex. Lots of Foucault. I still bear a grudge against Dan Savage because I tried to contact him for research/background info and he never replied - not even the courtesy of providing a "sorry, no" reply.
  5. Homophobic?

    Only a little!
  6. Homophobic?

Erm. I don't think that being "offensive to water-sport or ball-busting fetishists" is equivalent to being offensive to people who like/indulge in anal sex. That's a little slippery-slope-esque reasoning, there.
  7. Idle Thumbs Motorcycle Club

Depends on what you affix it with.

He looks like a grumpy Jedi Master. I'm working on my cover letter for a programming job in SF. Seems like there are a lot of us doing that right now. I'm not very confident in my abilities, especially since I have no Ruby experience and have to play the "I don't know your core language but I do know C and Perl and ActionScript and I'm a fast learner" fanfare, but I do have a Master's degree so that's bound to count for something. My current job is excellent, and the only problem with it is that it's on the wrong side of the continent.
  9. I don't know about valuable additions (I love all my Thumbs equally, etc) but there seems to be more "talking over each other for extended periods" now than there was in the days of Nick. I think in the time of Nick, he'd get annoyed with the interruptions and you know you don't want John Q Video games mad at you. Of course, if you continue talking over each other, perhaps you could record in stereo so we could pick out speakers by channel...

I hear he's already been invited to a ritual bloodletting and sacrifice! Unfortunately they request you bring a hot dish and Scotty isn't very good at cooking, so I hope he doesn't make a bad impression.

There are tons of fireworks going off today. It's driving the cats mental. Every time there's a particularly loud one, Cabot starts growling.
  14. Feminism

One of the 'explanations,' in his apology: "I'm new to Twitter as of this month, and genuinely thought @ messages went to those individuals only." What? Because a barrage of insulting messages questioning her value and accusing her of being mere decoration... would have been okay, if no-one else saw it? Jesus jackrabbit Christ.

Prostitutes qua prostitutes, or the "girlfriend experience" kind?
  16. Happy Birthday!

It was my birthday yesterday too.

Remember - measure once, then cut. Cut immediately. Get drunk before measuring, then drink more before cutting. It makes woodwork better.

I don't think Heartguard is approved for cats - I've only ever seen the dog versions - but you're right, I should get them treated for tapeworms just in case they picked some up from the fleas. I blame tropical storm Debby. I think the wet weather led to the feral cats (a pair of whom woke me up early with their yowling) sheltering in our stairwell and shedding eggs, plus wet weather tends to increase the number of fleas out there. The black cat is already on prescription "sensitive" food, and steroids, because he has allergies of the kind that do far more damage to carpets and furniture than a lot of scratching.
  21. Feminism

Normally I dislike the Escapist (a festering corpse kept alive by the flow-off from Zero Punctuation), but hey: 'I think the "feminist agenda" can be summed up by the phrase "we would really like it if you treated [women] like people."'
  22. That's a legitimate criticism. It also messes up the rhythm of the Goombas and makes it impossible to judge and predict their patterns as precisely as one could in the non-hopping-to-the-music versions.

(SIGHS HEAVLY.) The cats have fleas, despite my treating them with Frontline. I spent an hour this evening wrangling two yowling balls of fur into the tub, lathering them up, then waiting 5 minutes before rinsing them off. The fat orange cat was first, which was a good choice because he had more fight in him. The older black cat tried some sort of passive resistance interspersed with crazed scrabbling attempts to climb up me and burst my eardrums with his yelling. I have big red welts all over me from their frantic clawing. I will have to stop by the vet tomorrow to get some Advantage, since Frontline no longer works; I also need to put a note on my neighbours' door saying "sorry about the sounds of attempted feline murder last night."
