  1. Us and the Game Industry Kickstarter

So, I hadent heard about the orignal Kickstarter, and since no one seemed to be sure on what the deal was, I messaged the creator. After reading both Kickstarter descriptions and this email, I have noticed that there is a specific writing style being using by the author that dresses things up in a way that is sort of misleading if you arent paying careful attention. Erkki it looks like your fears may be right, she says "The film shan't be released without the required next spending. It will get released." So basically, yes, they need this money to get this to "exhibition quality", and if it dosent happen through Kickstarter then it will happen by some other yet-to-be-known-way. I think the vast majority of people would consider that a finished film is one for exhibition, but this project author seems to disagree.
  2. Wizaaaaaards!!

http://1saleaday.com/wireless/ Not sure what purpose this could serve besides being hilarious to laugh at.
  3. The Mojang Scrolls

Bethesda was right to sue, this looks IDENTICAL to Elder Scrolls.
  4. Gifts - Stuff for Free

Got a code for $1.20 off any Redbox rental, which basically means 1 free night for a DVD or 60% off a game or blu ray. PM me if you want it.
  5. Receiver

Made in 9 days, not 7. But very short dev time. Out of the 10 or so tapes Ive heard, its been the one about it being "normal to only hear static at first" at least 50% of the time, and only 3 unique tapes total.
  6. (IGN.com)

YES! OXM most certainly is. People never noticed because it has a weak online presence, but it uses hyperbole often and gives high ratings for hyped games.
  7. Receiver

I have a few problems with this game. The concept of it being systems driven is fascinating, but I think they executed a lot of them very poorly. I have an opposite opinion about the damage system. You cant. There are almost no visual cues to communicate this. Sure its nice they didnt do some Call of Duty-esque reticle flash when you get a hit, but they also didnt do anything subtle to communicate it indirectly. With the camera you can see that the light has been shot out. But I havent been able to discern any indication of when you have disabled the gun. Wasting ammo is costly, but more costly is dying and having to start all over. Since it takes just a single bullet to kill you, its quite annoying that you either have to risk all your progress or waste a shot because the game is ineffective at explaining itself. It feels like they relied on reaction time far too often, which is such a rigid, Doom-style game mechanic. Where everything else in indicates they didnt want to be a typical Video game. The game also gets very monotonous as you play. The randomized environments are nice, but some of the areas are very boring and after 15 minutes of playing you will have seen it all. If your like me and have yet to collect more than 2 or 3 tapes in one game, youll get bored quickly having to search the same areas over and over. Also they randomization of starting ammo and chambered ammo is tedious. Each time you start you have to make a spider-hand across the keyboard to pull the magazine out and check it before starting, or risk running into the first enemy with only a single bullet in your gun. Also its weird to mix the mostly fixed order audio tapes with the idea of no saving. Again, if you are dying a lot, that means you have to listen to the same thing over and over. The fact that they charged for this is SO douchy. $5 for a game you made in a week for a competition? Thats like a Tolkien publishing his grocery list and putting a price tag on it. I also assume that by now Wolfire has plenty of money from Humble Bundle, and they dont need to make this cost so much. EDIT: Its almost as if the game knew to test my patience. I just booted it up again and died instantly because a drone was immediately behind me and looking at me, I died before the screen even fully faded in. Its time for me to file this game under "failed experiments" and move on.
  8. You don't have to pass an IQ test to be a senator

His face at the end of the video was priceless!
  9. Plug your shit

Hey Thumbs, This summer I am trying to launch a website about green criminology, which studies environmental crime and how it impacts humans and the earth. I am working with an established group of professors and students called the International Green Criminology Working Group (IGCWG) to launch a site that will be used for publishing articles, teaching materials, etc about green criminology and will act as a content repository for the topic. We are trying to raise a small amount of money to get started that will pay for a website, hosting, and some software and hardware. So far we have gotten almost 30% of the way there, but mostly from contributions from existing members of the IGCWG. If you think this is a good project we would really appreciate the support. Even $1 is extremely helpful because it makes our project more visible on Kickstarter.com http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/34942146/green-criminology-online-journal Following our twitter or facebook would also be a huge help, Thanks! https://twitter.com/#!/greencrim http://www.facebook.com/GreenCriminology Also, Jeff Gold Game Gold Gold Gold Boost.
  10. Wizaaaaaards!!

Valve released their employee handbook, not exactly sure why. I only skimmed it but check the last page... they included a nice little Idle Thumbs shoutout in their Glossary. http://newcdn.flamehaus.com/Valve_Handbook_LowRes.pdf "Shitty Wizard—Person responsible for all Dota 2 bugs. Aka Finol."
  11. Borderlands

I like how with the promotion for the first game they legitimately thought having a billion guns was cool and now they are trying to play it off as an ironic-extreme thing.
  12. SCP-087

no it was, ,the game can be anywhere from ~20 floors to 200
  13. SCP-087

This game is a neat concept but the execution seems kinda flawed. Didnt find it to scary, though the ending is a bit unsettling (watched on youtube). ...however this SCP website is very cool. Never heard of it before and have enjoyed the hour or so Ive read so far, great concept.
  14. Mass Effect 3

Well that hardly seems like the reason EA is doing this. If i remember correctly, Origin launched with only EA games and they have done little to expand to other publishers since then. There are competitors to Steam - Direct2Drive, which was probably the biggest one, was just transitioned into a Gamefly service, there is Impulse which was bought by Gamestop, and there are numerous other smaller platforms like Green Man Gaming, Amazon's PC Download service, etc. A true competitor to Steam would be trying to provide similar services, Origin does not. And why not team up with one of the existing services, like Impulse, and negotiate an exclusive contract with them for EA games?
  15. Mass Effect 3

I feel the same way. Ideally EA would grow up and offer their games on multiple systems, but they want to draw customers to their new service. I dont think they will win many hearts with those kind of tactics, but whatever. EA Downloader (/Manager), which Origin grew out of, WAS shit and I think thats where many of the complaints are. Origin actually isnt that bad besides the tiny library and bad UI. It also needs time to work some other issues out, like why do I need to install games after downloading them? But regardless of its quality I will never use it. I love Steam and have a huge library there, I will not splinter it no matter what. I have yet to buy Battlefield 3 and I wont buy Mass Effect 3 either. EA can either lose the cut Steam takes or lose all of my money. Which is another interesting topic. Say a PC digital download costs $60, of that money isnt it all potential profit for the company? They dont have licensing fees like they do for consoles (which if I recall is like $10-30), they dont need to manufacture or ship anything. There is no retail markup. It can all go straight toward the publisher/developer. Now of course they have to pay development costs, advertising, etc. But of that $60, they get just about all 60. Whereas with a sale of a physical console copy it seems to be much less. So why, on the most profitable platform, do they need to be dicks? If Steam takes 30% that still leaves EA with $42. With Origin they obviously get to keep that 30%, but that dosent really seem worth all the negative press and customer ire. Once you count the sales they lose from people who wont use Origin, which I would guess isnt that much (maybe 10%?), it doesnt seem worth it for a few more million dollars.
  16. IDLE THUMBS KICKSTARTER!

This is the best news, I freaked when I saw this. Idlethumbs is one of the best sources of intelligent game critique ever. Pledging even though you have already met your goal.
  17. Far Cry 3

I will never tire of blasting shit on a beautiful tropical island. Its one of the best settings you can pick for a game and has done the Far Cry series good. Im not sure how I feel about the direction of the game, Im not seeing the problems of Far Cry 2 being addressed. We havent seen any gameplay besides idiotic running and gunning yet. Its also yet to be seen if there are actually neutral factions or civillians, or some group that isnt on a shoot-on-sight basis with you. As long as the game plays good and feels like Far Cry 2 I will be happy, even if the same mistakes are made. Unfortunately I dont think the game will be as good because this new director doesnt seem to have the same view on games as Clint did.
  18. Far Cry 3

Whats this? I havent been following the game at all, the director of Far Cry 3 was replaced?
  19. V The Elder Scrolls

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ic6dKnv3WdU You can see some of what im talking about in this video. They talk about how amazing the free roaming dragons are, yet when the dragon lands in that stone temple its not facing the players position but where he had been before, and more importantly where the path is. The combat with the bandit in the cave looks VERY much like oblivion with the sword slicing through him like he is a ghost. The only difference being that combat is shorter because attacks seem to do more damage. The finishing moves are not impressive at all. The 3rd person walking animations do look better, though who knows how that will hold up on steeper terrain. Todd mentions a "working economy" and says you can participate in it then immediately backtracks to say you can have small effects over it. He mentions how you will be able to destroy a woodmill but it sounds more like a staged event then a real economy. Sure messing up the woodmill changes the economy, but will buying all the wood or killing all the lumberjacks? This reminds me of something that was discussed on idlethumbs regarding world interaction (and how in heavy rain or something you can close a dudes eyes when he is dead, but you can only close one specific dudes eyes, not everyones eyes, which is not a true choice at all). I was under the impression that Skyrim was running on an upgraded version of the engine used for Fallout 3 and Oblivion, but I see it being called "The Creation Engine" now and I dont believe thats what was used with their previous games. Anyone know whats up with that? (Also Todd stumbles everywhere in this interview and many times just ignores the questions being asked, guess he was a bit off, I cant say I would enjoy an interview from the G4 idiots)
  20. V The Elder Scrolls

Glad to see someone actually read my post and not just the last line
  21. V The Elder Scrolls

In the past games such as Spore, Far Cry 2, and Crysis have succumbed to developer indulgence. All three games promised much more depth and detail then was ever contained in the full game. The supposed "Sim-Everything" Spore turned out to be closer to sim-nothing. Far Cry 2 (while being awesome. Far Cry 2 Far Cry 2) did not have the world depth it promised. And Crysis...well they said it would be in any way interesting and fun, it wasent. Elder Scrolls Oblivion is one of my favorite games and i spent over 700hrs playing it across 360 and PC. However it does have a lot of flaws, mainly in the combat aspects. To be honest it also failed in many of its RPG aspects, and the one thing it got right was a huge world, which was enough for me. Todd Howard keeps talking up how amazing Skyrim is going to be, but im keeping my expectations firmly set on "Oblivion 1.5". In a E3 preview i watched from G4, the combat was almost the same. Besides making it a little faster and giving players the new ability to control each hand, its still largely the same. Thats because their engine simply does not support anything else. I have played Oblivion, Fallout 3, and New Vegas, and they all have the floaty feeling... the way you walk, the way hits connect with you and enemies, its very disconnected. They may have "improved" the engine for Skyrim, but that will not change (and from what I have seen it has not). Initially they promised to improve on many of the things from oblivion, but this link that Murdoc provided shows how they are backing off on that. The armor system is the same, the questing system is the same. Unfortunately Bethesda is still the mediocre developer that made the inscrutable Morrowwind. Sure their games are good, but they are not great, and they are far from modern. I expect nothing more from Skyrim then a new coat of paint on the aging engine, and a game that will be 80% similar to Oblivion. Hopefully thats enough to provide another couple hundred hours of fun.
  22. Joystiq steals a joke?

I was reading an article on Joystiq yesterday and noticed they made a joke about "The Body Count of Monte Cristo" just like i had read from the ea_presents twitter. Then i noticed the post was written by Christopher Grant, EIC of Joystiq. Maybe im overracting but this seems pretty lame. Not only are they blatantly stealing a joke but its done by a senior writer. http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/22/visceral-games-working-on-xbla-psn-offerings-says-general-mana/#comments http://twitter.com/mtvernon/status/8554057164
  23. Mice for gamers.

Im okay at FPS but i think a good mouse is important. I dont like and have never liked Razer mice, the feel very cheap and light and are usually more expensive than competing brands. The Saitek Cyborg mouse that moves is terrible, hate it so bad. The gimmick of it changing sizes is pointless, if a mouse is well engineered it should feel good already you dont need some poor adjustments for it to work. I personally love the Logitech G5, its a little expensive but feels great and has great extra buttons. It only has 2 extras buttons but they are very easy to use and two is usually enough for most games. Unrelated, but as far as keyboards go: I have a G15 and i like the LED backlight and keys but the screen is pointless and spending $70+ on a keyboard was so dumb. Get a cheap Saitek with a backlight and youll be happy. I bought one of those WolfKing Pads from Woot a while ago, so terrible. The key position is so foreign i was constantly hitting the wrong keys because of my muscle memory. If you have never played PC gamers before they might work for you though.
  24. Down in the Zone (S.T.A.L.K.E.R.)

the first game with OL2.2 + Arsenal 2 is still the best imo but Cal of Pripyat is very good, easier for new players and not buggy like clear sky. the game is kinda unfocused though. if you already own a stalker game its only $20 on steam, $30 if you dont, and $40 in store. for $40 its a little much, for $20 you should def. buy it.
  25. Joystiq steals a joke?

the screen cap i took yesterday didnt have it but it is there now... dont know when it was added. hmm well never mind then. im the senior super douche
